Re: [BlindHandyMan] Recovering from PRS (Pack Rat Syndrome)

2006-08-08 Thread Shawn Keen

My neighbor is a major packrat, he told me he has stuff even in other
peoples barns, tractors and combines etc.

I used to have a deal with him where he could keep his boat in my garage for
a weekly yard trimming.

Well his boat turned in to a motor cycle, a old 77 chevvy love, and a pile
of crap nobody would want. My father in-law told me trucks like that people
pay him to come and get and move for them. then he crushes them!

I terminated that deal last December. there's still a pile of buckets along
one wall but 95% of it's gone.

those yard trimming jobs turned in to once a month as well.

sigh!

Now I am married to a pack rat!

Hey Barry,
Another solution to your problem is to
find another pack-rat, and give them everything
you are getting rid of. Load that dumpster and
put it in their driveway. That way, you'll know
that all your stuff is safe ... in someone else's
garage. My Mother in law, who was also a pack rat
would give things to my husband, cause she knew he

Barry! How about arranging to go on a long cruise, and while you are away,
making the
most of the world's ultra pleasure spots, get some unscrupulous stranger to
come in and,
depending on your own strength of mind, have him/her heave out 75%, or even,
and I
shudder at the very thought, 100% of the repository of your: "May need it at
some
unspecified time in the far distant future".

It would be wise to make the cruise a longish one, so that by the time you
return to the
empty, or nearly so, void that once was a retirement home for items that had
long served
any sort of conceivable purpose, you will have forgotten them: such is the
fickle nature

line, my workshop became a community workshop.
That has to stop. And, I don't care if it makes me look like a selfish

organization of it.
I'm not lessening the impact of my own pack ratitis, but that pack ratitis
has been severely exacerbated by the invasion of my workshop by others.

The simple rule of "clean up and put things back where you find them" has

RE: [BlindHandyMan] Recovering from PRS (Pack Rat Syndrome)

2006-08-07 Thread Cy Selfridge
Robert,
My good friend, I am old and have endured many hours in training to be a
"good" husband. This training has been applied by more than one wife o I
feel that I can speak with considerable authority on these exact issues.
(LOL)
While we have all heard the expression "What is good for the Goose is good
for the Gander". This is an old and wise adage - but - what you seem to fail
to realize is that what is good for the Gander is not necessarily good for
the Goose.
As an example, it is important for the Gander to put his things away because
this teaches obedience to the Goose.
It is a proven fact that Obedient ganders spend far less time in the dog
house or on the park bench than do the Cavalier Ganders who will do what
they will do totally ignoring the pleadings of the Goose.
Another piece of reality is the fact that there is neither a Ministry of
Justice or a Ministry of Fairness.

Now as for the other issue it is important for you to keep firmly in mind
the fact that it is not "your" valueable antiques which are cluttering your
abode, it is *her* junk.
Just look at the evidence already given on this list. Very few blind men
complain about the space taken and inconvenience caused by *their* valuable
antiques and priceless keepsakes. (ROFL)
You see my friend, you are in despirate need of proper Gander Guidance.
Think now, just ask the Lady of the House.. (LOL)
Cy, the well trained Ancient Okie...
P.S. Do you get your coffee in bed each morning?

Barry, NO! Wait!
That piece of 2 foot conduit is of a type which is no longer made and can
not be replaced. You have similar conduit in your house now and if you have
to match the conduit for whatever reason you will not be able to do it
unless you keep that 2 foot piece. (ROFL)
Wait another second Barry, isn't that castor laying over there the only one
which will match the 3 which are on that roll around table over there in the
corner.
When the time comes (if it ever does) to actually fix that table then you
will not have the correct castor and you would have to go out and buy 4 new
ones. Just look at the waste you are creating

Aloha,
From personal experience: My husband is sighted. I think it is an
individual person problem. I finally moved my husband and all his
paper and computers to a room where I can close the door and nobody
ever sees his according to him, "organized mess." As for who should
put things away, well, my theory in this house is that if you bring
it in it's yours and therefore it's your responsibility. If it sits
around too long, I put it in his office, in any somewhat availble
place. You probably need to know that we have a 4 bedroom house with
a 24 by 24 family-room that is my office and a livingroom the size of
a 3 car garage. Plenty room for two people and one cat. I can't
imagine what it would be like if the kids were still at home. Oi!

Barry! Barry, wait, wait!

For your own sake you absolutely should remove **all** hardware from anything

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Recovering from PRS (Pack Rat Syndrome)

Hi Folks,

Well, through the humor, I've actually gotten some good ideas from the
list... At least, some good thoughts.

I am, indeed, going to rent a dumpster, and just throw out most of what
seems like junk to me. Though, the notion that I'll need, within the next
day or week, that which I've just tossed strikes real fear in me.

I like the thought of accumulating space, instead of stuff.

I don't know about anyone else, but with so much clutter, lack of room to
move around the workshop, and all sorts of stuff the purpose of which I
never knew or have forgotten, I find my workshop to be a foreign and anxiety
provoking place... Certainly not what it should be to me.
A large part of the problem is other people. Once upon a time, BC (before
children), my "nobody-allowed-in-my-workshop" rule was obeyed. Then, as the
kids got older, there was no such thing as a "Dad only" workshop. So, the
kids invaded. Once the mote had been breached, the drawbridge was left down
for friends, neighbors, etc. I caved, I crumbled, and somewhere along the
line, my workshop became a community workshop.
That has to stop. And, I don't care if it makes me look like a selfish
jerk. The workshop of a person who is blind needs to be left to his/her own
organization of it.
I'm not lessening the impact of my own pack ratitis, but that pack ratitis
has been severely exacerbated by the invasion of my workshop by others.

The simple rule of "clean up and put things back where you find them" has
never been adhered to in this workshop. I'm going to put my foot down... I
just hope its not on a sawblade!

--Barry

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Recovering from PRS (Pack Rat Syndrome)

2006-08-07 Thread Jennifer Jackson
Barry,

I will admit that over the years of my decluttering I have had a few things
that I gave or threw away that I later wished I had. However, what I ask
myself is would I have been able to find it amongst all of the clutter to
use anyway. Also, with all the time I spent moving all that clutter around
trying to find things and get it organized, would I even have had the time
to work on this project before anyway. I use and enjoy my space so much
more now, that it definitely makes up for the few things I have missed.

Jennifer
