[Boatanchors] General Electronics TN-75 transmitter

2018-04-29 Thread Fuqua, Bill L
My first novice rig was a General Electronics TN-75 transmitter and a
HQ-129X receiver.

The TN-75 had a 6CL6 crystal oscillator and a 807 final, with a 5U4 rectifier.
It only had two bands, 80 and 40 meters, but I only had a 40 meter plug in coil.

It would be nice to have one again even though I had very few contacts on it
before the transformer smoked.

Anyone out there have one that they are willing to part with?

Later I got an early model HT-4 but used it for parts to build a linear
amplifier. I wish I still had that one but they are hard to come by and would
be very costly.

Re: [Boatanchors] Kleinschmidt teletype

2015-09-30 Thread Fuqua, Bill L
It was a wirewrapped 6502 with rewritten Kim monitor in 4 1702 256x8 eproms.
The output routine was sent baudot code. With things like .EQ. for = and
.LE. for< etc.
Input however was a ASCII keyboard from Jameco. You could get them for
around $10.
Later I made a tape interface so that I could load tiny basic. I first had
only
1k bytes of ram ( 8x 2102) but finally got up to 32 k with 8 4k boards all on
22 pin double readout
PCB's hand etched by a friend here in town. Took a lot of power.
I still have it in the basement somewhere.
A flood ruined my model 15 and my speedgraphic camera. along with a lot of
other stuff.
Was not exactly a flood, we had a ice storm and loss of power for about a week
and
the basement filled up with water since the sump pump did not work.
My second computer was a Rockwell AIM-65 that I put into an old IBM took kit.
MY first lap top. It had a little thermal printer and a LED alph numeric
display.
I got a 32kB memory board that was intended for, I think, OSI computers. That
board cost $600 those days. This was around 1979. I still used my model 15
sometimes for
printouts but replaced it with a surplus chain printer, about 250 lb monster.
I knew the company I was working for was going bust so I also added A/D and
D/A to
it with the intent of going into consulting. However, an engineering position
opened up
at the University of Kentucky in the Physics department. I applied and took my
computer
in the attache case. It impressed them, but they showed me their fast Z80 s-100
computers
and I challenged one professor to a race. We both had Microsoft basic and
entered the same
program, something like 1 multiplies, I won. I got the job too.
Sorry to be so long winded, but you did ask.

Bill! tell us more about the computer
and how you used the 15 with it... as a printer? or also as a keyboard
input device.

Re: [Boatanchors] Neat Source of Modified Crystals

2015-08-11 Thread Fuqua, Bill L
You have to understand that HC49S crystals can't handle the power that FT-243
crystals can.
They are more fragile than the larger ones. Be careful when using them in
vacuum tube applications.
Heating may not fracture them but may cause chirp and drift.

Not sure if these will work in any rigs other
than those listed - but worth inquiring ...
considering the price!

Re: [Boatanchors] [ARC5] Unusual BC-221

2015-03-03 Thread Fuqua, Bill L
Now, I have a question. There is an experiment I always wanted to try if I
ever found a still boxed Bc221 or LM.
Is it still accurate? Can you check it WWV perhaps or a well calibrated crystal
calibrator to see if it still agrees with the book?
First, how close is the crystal calibrator before making any adjustments to it,
and then after setting the crystal calibrator
how closely does the book match. I had always been amazed by the precision of
many instruments made during WWII.

This unusual BC-221 followed me home from a hamfest a few years ago. The
guy practically begged me to take it.

I just got it out of storage a few days ago.

I have never seen one like this and don't find any model numbers on it.

I did have it on the bench and it works.

Attached are some pictures.

If you can hear additional background noise when you connect the antenna, then
probably no unless you
have a problem with image rejection.

Would a preselector make enough of a difference
used with an Elmac PMR-6a to be bothered with?

Added selectivity and low-noise sensitivity
would be the intended goal - used in a fixed
rather than original-design mobile setting.

I have one with leather case , schematic cards etc.
don't have accessories. It does have a very nice built in key for CW and a
thin leather patch on the leather case for CW just over the button.
However, if you have a Geiger counter within 10 yards it will go crazy.

Imagine a transceiver, with one valve, doing speech and CW. One valve, a
double triode with clever switching:-
