Hello, I should probably announce my presence
(lurking on this list for a month or two). I'm
relatively new to using Perl, but I had been
slowly studying it over the years. (I have the bad
habit of doing things in bash, awk, and sed which
I want to break.) I do Quality Assurance at Akamai.
Meetings at MIT would work really well for me and
I'm pretty sure I'd come (especially if they are on
Tuesdays).

I know trekking out to BC was a major disincentive for me :-P

But there are all sorts of interesting things, for example overlap between
Perl Monks and Perl Mongers or size of PMs. I was in Paris for the past six
months and Paris.PM is about 8 people; only two of which are monks and one's
not actually from anywhere near Paris.

What is this groups list/page of which you speak? I've been floating around
here for the last 8 years and have heard nothing of it :-P If trying to
publicize I think cross-pollination with LUGs or informing student computing
groups like SIPB might help.

Ahh, apparently here (for the curious) http://web.mit.edu/mugs/
and Boston.PM is already listed

That would mean putting it as
   Boston/Cambridge.pm
as in
  use Boston::Cambridge;

maybe being listed on the groups at mit page will get us new members. in
fact, my inquiry to bblisa did land a new member (who wrote me about
that). and maybe some currently active mit may show up too. it's so odd
that we know perl is used all over that (like anywhere there are
computers, perl is used) but few mit people seem to be active in
pm. they must all think perl is lisp's ugly but smarter step sister! :)

CD> So, any idea how soon we could have another meeting?

we are getting registered with them right now. we then have to ask for
possible dates that work with our usual meeting schedule (like 2nd or
3rd tues/wed of the month). and getting a quicker first booking may be
possible as soon as august but i can't say what date. of course it will
have to be after OSCON.

  CD> It's been a while...

yes, which is why i pursued this. i got the lead from the BBLISA leader
and they have been meeting there for a long time as well as other groups
on that list. so this should be a long term solution with good amenities
(modern room, parking, T, food nearby).

more to follow when ronald starts on booking dates. we should be listed
on that groups at mit page very soon as they have all the info but dates
(which will be listed at TBA for now). we should update our site (has it
EVER been updated? :) to link to that groups page since that will have
our future dates and schedule. and a link to a google map for the
building will be nice and i bet mit has such a beast (bill ricker said
something like that).

Excellent news!

Yes, that's the building the BLU.ORG uses also.
Quite nice, handy.

> which has a free parking lot next to it (after 3pm)

Not big, but large enough. No ballgames either.

> and is close to the
> kendall stop on the redline so this is a great setup for us.

close enough, but a bit hard to find from there the first time.
MIT has good linkable maps.

The only downside is that user-groups get bumped by B-school academic
programs special events, so one has to post the actual room # for each
month on a just-in-time announcement. Our Wiki and mailing list can
handle that, but we need to remember to do so.

Being a B-school, the rooms are pretty nice, and are marked NO FOOD OR
DRINK;
I suspect if they found pizza in the upholstery it would be bad for at
least the
guilty user-group and possibly other groups without a faculty/staff
sponsor.
I wouldn't recommend pizza-in-room.

> possibly do pizza in the hallway

Stand-up Buffet-style in the hallway appears to be acceptable there.

Not sure if the side tables for that are always there or are only set up

for the big events, though, don't recall. Worst case, someone who
drives could keep a plastic folding picnic table in the trunk.

> also nearby is legal seafoods and characters bar (in the marriott) and

BLU.org goes to CBC for "dinner" afterwards EVERY month.
Much to recommend that -- besides the free WiFi, the food is good too.
