[Listref] Hayman fire - started by a burning letter

2003-03-13 Thread Deborah Harrell
I saw her on the local TV last week, saying again that
she was upset and burned 'a letter from her husband'
and thought it was out before she left the campfire
ring...

http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/state/article/0,1299,DRMN_21_1656225,00.html

CRIPPLE CREEK - Terry Lynn Barton, the U.S. Forest
Service worker who already pleaded guilty to federal
charges of starting the state's largest wildfire last
June, pleaded guilty Monday to state arson charges...
...Barton admitted starting the fire June 8 by burning
a letter in Pike National Forest on a "red-flag day"
(a forest service term for windy, dry days with high
fire danger).

Oooh, I think you're right! (But it *is* typical of
me that the cover I'd remember first has a horse on
it... :D )

I never read _Little Town'_, or several others (First
4, Happy Golden etc) so I missed the episode with the
kittens...

My best friend and I, after reading about the incident
with the Indians and the prairie fire, not only gave
ourselves 'Indian' names, but had a newcomer girl
convinced that we were adopted 'off the reservation.'
(Well, also after seeing Disney's "Tonka Wakan" (sp?)
about the lone survivor of Custer's debacle - the
horse Comanche.) ;)

I thought that _On the Shores of Silver Lake_ was the one with her
riding bareback flat-out, and that _Little House on the Prairie_ had the
picture of her looking out the back of the covered wagon. (And it was
_Little Town on the Prairie_ that had the sisters with the kitten, and I
could probably describe a number of other covers, but probably nobody
else is interested)

Exactly! _Little House On The Prairie_; the fire may
have been set by the Indians before their big
migration, to make it easier for the travois to be
pulled, and something about encouraging new grass
growth for their ponies... IIRC.

Which one? I'm trying to remember, and about all I *can* remember is
something about Pa plowing a firebreak around the house, and after the
fire swept through, the house being on a little island in a sea of
char

[Listref] Hayman Fire

2002-12-10 Thread Deborah Harrell
Update on the biggest fire in recorded Colorado
history:

http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36%257E53%257E1032869,00.html?search=filter

"Terry Lynn Barton will serve five to 10 years in
federal prison for starting the largest wildfire in
Colorado history if a plea agreement is approved
today...

"The former U.S. Forest Service employee faced 17 to
65 years in federal prison and a $750,000 fine after
prosecutors said she admitted setting the 138,000-acre
Hayman fire outside of Lake George, in the Pike
National Forest south of Denver, on June 8...

"Barton told federal investigators June 15 that she
accidentally started the fire while burning a letter
from her estranged husband in a fire ring. She tried
to put it out but was unable to, she said, because of
tinder-dry forest conditions caused by the drought."

I see that Sydney is in even worse straits (if the BBC
is correct).
