Follow-up Comment #1, bug #39217 (project grub): This also applies to grub-set-default. Also, using ** as the submenu separator is problematic, as you have to quote it or escape it with a backslash to prevent the shell from interpreting it as a redirection. Any documentation update should clearly mention that quoting is required. Please note that menu items in submenus or sub-submenus require specifying the submenu titles and then the menu item title. The titles should be separated using the greater-than character () with no extra spaces.
