I'm also a bit surprised by the "wc -l | awk '{print $1}" construct. The 
point of sending -l to wc is to only get the line number count as 
output, yes? So why the awk part then?

Ditto. I did some googling on this and pmcycles is flagged as maybe 
being deprecated in the future and may require privileges to execute. 
lparstat -i seems to be more commonly used.
