The following participated onboard the ships this past Sunday.

Keith Stolle

Mike Teers

Kelli Medbury

Mark Janzer

Mike Hardwick

John Chauvin

Rick Wannall

Michael Monsour

Scott Medbury

Jon Noxon was ill, though was there in spirit.

We erected a dual band UHF/VHF on the USS Stewart and further investigated the
transmission line in the sail of the USS Cavalla.

Just as we were to erect Jon's loop antenna and begin on the wire antenna
replacement on the Cavalla, a severe thunderstorm bore down on us and we
abandoned the ships.

Thanks to Michael for the stainless cable clamps, Keith for the cooler of water
and Kelli for risking life and limb in the Cavalla sail. Thanks to all who were
there and pitched in, all were a great help.

As it stands, we'll have two HF stations (and a 2m rig) on the USS Stewart and
one HF station in the picnic area (for the Selma). The antennas currently
available will be the loop antenna and the Stewart's original wire antenna, as
well as Mike's portable tower and two (soon to be three) element beam for the
Selma. There is still the possibility we'll get the wire antenna going on the
Cavalla and also have a hex beam for use in the picnic area.

If you haven't already signed up for operating during the weekend Fri- Sun June
2,3,4 please email me.

I'll be sending on a current list of attendees/operators/volunteers within the
next few days.

Re: [BVARC] 2m Rig RG-58 / RG-8x Jumper & RS Stores

2017-05-23 Thread Jon Livingston kb0mnm via BVARC
Folks-
If the cable is to be used only for test purposes at under 100 watts, and you
prefer not to build your own:
Radio Shack P/N 278-968 is a 2-foot RG-58 ( 50 Ohm cable ) with PL-259 crimps.
I usually do *not* recommend a product such as this for three reasons:
1. There is no way to 're-use' these crimped connectors if the crimp or cable
fails.
2. RG-58 cable inside is not specified as stranded center, which would be less
brittle.
3. Radio Shack is known for inexpensive products, and lately for marking prices
up to ease their markdown discount.

That said, some stores also have an abundance of 19 Amp power supplies in
stock. These do provide 12 VDC ( 13.8 VDC normal unloaded ) from regular house
current. With 80% discount in some stores, the price can be under $30.00.
Again, the chain is not known for a quality product in all cases. I will say
that I have been pretty happy with their multimeter P/N 22-812 except for the
holster ( trimmed to keep leads inside ). While it is slow to register readings
in automatic mode, the capacitance function was handy for some work. Accuracy
was not bad in comparison to a much more expensive Fluke meter. No, I did not
buy this meter- it was a gift from my wife.
I have talked to some store employees who claim that their store is one that
would stay open. Of note, the one on Louetta (may be mis-spelled ) near the big
school in Klein had a few of these- and claimed to stay open for now ( last
week on Wednesday ). A closer site for some BVARC members would be the store at
20031 Katy Freeway, Katy 77450. The telephone number for that store is (281)
492-2338.

While I once worked part-time at a Radio Shack store, I have no fiduciary (
money ) interest in the chain. Many of the stores were independently-owned
rather than owned by Tandy. This would explain why some will continue to sell
RS parts ( until exhausted ) and Sprint telephones.
Radioshack(R) and Tandy and Sprint names are protected by Trademark and/or
Copyright.

Hi thereI need a 3 foot Coaxial Cable Jumper with PL259 Connectors for
attaching a SWR meter to the 2 meter mobile. Where is the best place to buy one
or the best place to buy the cable and connectors? I used to make cables for
installs. I think I remember how. But been years since I purchased any cable. I
know I should have been to HamFest but I wasn't. :-(Thank you in advanceKF5HQE
