in June. That is usually, but not always, the last full weekend in June.

There will be a planning meeting this Thursday, June 8th at 7PM at the
Sugar Land Masonic Lodge. See the BVARC website for directions.

We will also discuss the June 10 Field Day meeting that will be held
at the Pecan Grove Volunteer Fire Department to familiarize ourselves
with the site and get a look at antenna locations.

If you wish to operate, there will be plenty of opportunities starting
at 1PM on the 24th and for the 24 hours following. This is a
continuous operation and effort.

Re: [BVARC] Museum Ships Weekend

2017-06-05 Thread Paul Noll via BVARC
Hello everyone,
I'm new here and just joined BVARC. I missed out on the Museum Ships Weekend
due to prior plans. Would have liked to have gone down south and joined in.
I know that Field Day is coming up and I would like to help out with set up if
possible out at the fire station. Im wanting to learn as much as possible and
think there is no better way to do that than to be around people who are
experienced so I hope I'm not intruding. I'm new to HF and only have a
Technician license currently but am working toward getting my General and any
help toward that goal would be greatly appreciated !!
I have been an aircraft mechanic for 33 years and have had "some" radio com
experience as it relates to that industry so its not all foreign to me. Still
have a LOT to learn though !!!

Anyway, just wanted to say hello and I look forward to meeting all of you.

Re: [BVARC] Museum Ships Weekend

2017-06-05 Thread Scott Medbury via BVARC
Gayle,

The bands were not kind on HF, but we were there. We also had some antenna and
radio problems early. Down there we had a hard time picking up the TEXAS, but
did. I heard the Lexington, but they had a pileup working. The net took place
and the Elissa, Texas, Cavalla and Stuart were there. The cool thing about
Museum Ships is that ANY band is fair game as it is NOT a contest. 17 meters
opened up and was a good place to spend a couple of hours.

I was on 10 meters for a while, but it was dead until almost 5PM when it opened
to YV Land (Venezuela). Hopefully the sun will cooperate more during Field Day.

We will have a GOTA station set up on Field Day and ALL Techs will have an
opportunity to operate on 10, 15, 20 and 40. We get bonus points if you make 20
QSOs while operating GOTA, so I will be looking for YOU!

We will also have a 2 meter station looking for contacts on SIMPLEX FM and
possibly SSB as well. So you will have lots of opportunities to get your feet
wet.

Have been looking forward to Museum Ships weekend for several years now, each
year a disappointment for me...but this year would be better!!! Heard nothing
from the USS Stewart or USS Cavallia on 10 - 20- 40 meters all day Saturday or
Sunday. Bought a new Icom 7300 last week "just for the event". Hoisted my also
new Alpha- Delta DX-EE and my 10 meter Moxon 30 feet in the air...but nothing
from Galveston I live in Richmond...maybe I'm too far away for HF from
Galveston??. I did hear a little faint but soon lost USS Lexington and USS New
Jersey Saturday morning on 20 Meters but being a Tech I couldn't contact
themdarn! Saturday around 2 P.M. tried the Ships Net 147.14 did it happen??
I couldn't hear anything there either. Well maybe next year. I did order
today a 10-20-40 long-wire drop my other antennas, thinking I can start it on
my 30 foot push-up mast 2 feet off the edge of my roof and go out from there
getting it away from the building. I have heard 2 good BVARC friends that uses
a long-wire for their HF...maybe they knows something. I did hate missing out
on the fun at Museum Ships weekend again!

Hi Gayle:
My name is Leslie, ad5wb.I was on site with the Elissa.
I am sorry you could not hear us.Conditions this year were marginal to say the
least. We often went 15 minutes between successful contacts.]
Saturday we were on 40, 20 and 17 phone; and 20 cw.We tried 10 meter phone as
well.Yes the 2 pm net took place but Richmond is a long way for the repeater in
Texas City.Sunday:  even with all the storms we were on 20 phone, 20 cw and
took shots at 10 and 17 phone. All said we only had a little over 400 unique
contacts when we shut down Sunday afternoon.
It was not the best of showings for us!
