Re: [BVARC] extra exam.

2023-03-20 Thread Michael Monsour via BVARC
I was a trained Electronic Technician . Yes the Extra exam is really
something else. I crawled into the brain of the people that wrote that
thing. In the case of formulas I just had to get the digits right and
ignore the decimal point. I only had to really study stuff that I never was
exposed to, plus now there are question pools. In the early 70s there were
no question pools for the RadioTelephone and Radar licenses. one had to
study the complete knowledge. You are lucky now as in the old days , one
had to draw out a schematic or two. OH yes I passed the first try up in
Stevenville..
In Cuba one has to make a transmitter [parts came from junked out TV sets
in order to be licensed.

There were more than one revision to the 706. The earliest ones used a
final transistor that is no longer available, and what is available needs a
larger footprint. There was an article somewhere that detailed what all had
to be done to make the newer component fit that older board.

Re: [BVARC] PC repair

2021-10-26 Thread Michael Monsour via BVARC
*There are places that do not recognize that static discharge will destroy
electronics. My company at the time had a high abnormal circuit card
failure rate. Circuit cards were returned to the factory in Australia. They
sent some boards to the university there and used a scanning electron
microscope to determine failure. Static discharge was the culprit! Plus
some boards were damaged in such a way that the boards would quit working
after a short time. Well the company put together a 'Chinese style
re-education anti-static seminar'. The amount of static that can destroy
circuitry is below human perception*

*So if you walk into a shop and do not see any anti-static straps- walk
right out!*
*Try Micro-Center.*

Re: [BVARC] N5XZ Lightning Strike - Seeking guidance

2021-07-06 Thread Michael Monsour via BVARC
I suffered a house fire almost a year ago...
The day after, a rebuilder came to see if I would not go with them as my
insurance company recognizes them as a valid rebuilder.
Then right after an insurance recovery outfit came to offer their services
at 7%. They became my 'interface' to the insurance company so I receive the
top dollar. Are they worth it? Yes. Settlement is exceedingly complex and
they guilded me through the process.
I would call up some Insurance Recovery outfits and see if they are
interested.

I have seen racist cartoons posted on this reflector with no public
complaint (but not recently)
*Some poor soul asking for help should not be a concern!\*

To the OP a good lawyer will turn rocks over to figure out who to sue and
then you may need a lawyer to squeeze your insurance company in provided
assistance.

To the OP, the Affordable Care Act is now open enrollment, I can provide
the name of an agent who will guide you through the process without cost to
you. I know many people that are on it.

Re: [BVARC] marine radio installation

2017-07-28 Thread Michael Monsour via BVARC
These days a GROL which used to be known as a 1st/2nd class RadioTelephone
license is only necessary for aircraft and marine installations. A marine
radar installation has to be done by someone with a radar endorsement.
Additionally the GMDSS operators/maintainers licenses *may* also be
necessary for a radio installation. If the Tall Ship ever takes on
passengers, that might trigger more stringent requiements.

I found four stainless steel cable clamps. [U bolts with saddle]
If there is a picture, then I can locate stainless hardware which I think

Re: [BVARC] Lightning Strike

2017-01-16 Thread Michael Monsour via BVARC
Get an industrial robust isolation transformer.
For ten years I worked on French equipment where the power input was 230
volt.
Because American power in industrial sites are 208 volts a step up
isolation transformer was used at almost every site, that also had
protected 125 volt outlets for the PC etc.
Never had a problem. The internal surge circuitry may have burnt up but the
equipment never suffered any breakdown due to power problems

Re: [BVARC] Everyday EMF

2016-06-30 Thread Michael Monsour via BVARC
Years ago, A power station in North Dakota had a DC power line built
through Minnesota. The farmers were 'up in arms' about this. There was a
scheduled turn on date and then the farmers started to complain about
cattle, chickens dying etc.
Except the turn on date was postponed due to technical difficulties... so
the complaints were false...
Farmers started to topple high tension towers then someone had the bright
idea to sell the transmission to the Federal government.
The next tower fell down and the FBI, IRS and state and federal inspectors
for this, that and everything else came out. Easy find was finding heating
fuel [untaxed and illegal] in tractors. That tower toppling came to an end

DX Engineering is your best bet for pieces 6 feet long. Any longer and it
seems it has to go freight. Texas Towers has 10 or 12 foot long pieces. I
hauled some of that stuff back a couple of years ago.
For repair I have some tubing that I will let go for 40 cents a pound
[scrap price]
Use a caliper and tell me the diameter and I will see if I have it and how
long you need it to be

Re: [BVARC] build a bandpass filter

2016-04-03 Thread Michael Monsour via BVARC
You buy the thing!
I have almost a complete set of Bandpass filters [ minus 30 and 60 meters]
most of them are the most expensive kind. I have one which I think is 15
meters which is the cheaper type but it is suitable in the environment for
MSWE and Field Day
Curves are available from the vendor that shows how effective that they are
and if any other bands may leak through
As i recall there was one Bandpass filter of the cheaper type that was not
suitable as it let one other band through

With a good bandpass filter [ the more expensive one] the whole band is
usable

I have the following filters 160, 80, 40 20 15, 17, 12[?] 10
I may not have 12 meters as MSWE does not operate there

They are *ONLY* available for my MSWE and TARS Field Day

But I can bring two examples and take the covers off and see the difference

2016-03-31 Thread Michael Monsour via BVARC
John:
When selecting tables, automatically getting a Hamfest admission ticket is
not good.
Yes for the one person for one table it does work...
For the multiple table like I did THEN I realized I needed an extra table I
got stuck with getting an extra ticket.

All this can be solved with a red scrolling message that says Tables do not
include admission
Initially, not having to be able to select specific tables generated much
hate. In print I will not describe what I truly feel.
I went to the Orange hamfest with one table and they said the person who
hands out tables has the most responsibility to ensure everybody is happy

By the way i went to the Raine ,LA Hamfest where Kenwood, Yaesu and MFJ
were.
I asked all three why they were there. 650 people one day hamfest
I would like to give a very brief talk what I learned. It is enlightening

Those pilots are bottom of the barrel and just beginning to amass flying

If they can get a couple of thousand hours of flying time then they can go
on to better and bigger things

Air Wisconsin flight 965 Minneapolis to Lincoln Nebraska crashed in Iowa,

The only reason I wasn't on that thing was because another service call in

Age is not the barrier. It is very expensive to get multi-engine jet

amass the required experience and hours it takes to get hired by these

OTOH, it is very easy to get an amateur license, get on the air and make a

I guess that’s why they call it “Amateur” Radio.

QST August has a review of The Art of Electronics by Paul Horowitz and
Winfield Hill. This is about the 3rd edition. A great book, equivalent,
IMHO, to the Hayward/DeMaw RF design book “Solid State Design for the Radio
Amateur”. The AOE covers general electronics; little of RF, but some.

So this new 3rd edition is $120, but the second edition 1990 can be had
for the price of a free download.

Google “The Art of Electronics PDF” the first link shown will be a PDF
from the IATE.OAR.UNCOR.EDU -- download it. It is the full 1043 page
text of the 2ndedition. 28 Meg.

More great electronics and radio stuff for free. Don’t you just love the
 Internet?

 Enjoy….73….Rick – W5RH

Seems to be centered on Highway 6 before one gets to the Sugar Land airport.
This will have ~ 2,800 homes, miles of trails, parks with 70 acres of lakes

This is being managed by C.I.A, Services which is the HOA management company
I am allowed an antenna in back of the house no higher than 10 or 20 feet

As I recall ( thats not much these days) the coast guard station provided
a small area for our use. Yacht Basin was as said for car/boat parking.
not provision for comfort. The full restrooms /showers, able to set tents,
large area to set various antennas and use of cabanas won the day at Ft
Travis. When Cookie and I gave all a looksee the summer heat and shade was
also a key factor. Ft Travis is a lock up after dark park however gate code
was given to chairman MSWE for 24 hr access. Anyway thats what I still
remember. The county park was happy with our event

I suggested the coast guard station last year, don't remember why no one
 checked with them.

Bill and I checked it last year. I do not remember the objection, but we
decided not to ask. Perhaps no restrooms? Do you remember Bill?

I was going to wait to bring this up tilI was able to get down to
Galveston to check it out myself, but has anyone considered looking into or
asking the Galveston Yacht Basin ? Yes, it's all car/boat parking, BUT
it's also a mile from Seawolf, the ships should be visible without aids,
and we'd be an IOTA again.

  Cookie,

I would move forward with the request to the Galveston County Board for
Ft. Travis. I know the mosquitoes were really bad but I don’t think there
is any other option at this time. I talked with Bill about the MSWE and he
has no problem with it and Ft. Travis. I know it is on the agenda for the
BOD meeting tomorrow so there should be plenty of comments after tomorrow.
Unfortunately, I will be out of e-mail coverage starting tomorrow around
 6pm until the 14th.

I am ready for it and, if possible, will be spending more time at Ft.
 Travis this year.

 Keep up the good work.

 Thanks,

 Mike

Is this thread about MSWE or SkyWarn? After recently being denied access
to the ship compound at Seawolfe park, I put a query on the reflector about
the interest of members in Ft. Travis on Bolivar, but I have not received
any replies. Jerry Muller recently withdrew from his co-chairman position
for personal reasons and I am interested in anyone who desires to take over
that role. At present I am wondering if there is sufficient interest in
the event to query the Galveston County Park Board about the availability
of Ft. Travis. Last year was good, but the mosquitos in the early evening
 were fierce.

After I made my query, I did not receive any messages on the BVARC
reflector until the one from Mike Hardwick shown below. I would appreciate
it if the situation would be briefly discussed at the coming board meeting
and the feeling of the BOD would be relayed to me.
