Re: [BVARC] the phase out of landline phone service

I guess it's time for me to junk the ISDN PRI gear I've got in my garage.

ISDN BRI has been going away though it never really caught on for

to over a thousand a month it was time to say goodbye..

ISDN PRI service has been going away for years. Around 2008, AT in
Texas was promoting it with a real cheap rate for businesses to get
off T1s for phone service. I upgraded the Centerpoint office in New
Braunfels and save them $700 a month!!

But it's time was limited as IP took over..

In actuality, you can easily DO fax over an SIP VoIP line. I use HamShack
Hotline, and in addition I have a 1-800 number from VOIP.MS, which costs me
about a buck a month. They also offer a Fax VoIP service for about $2/month,
here is the article on their wiki:

https://wiki.voip.ms/article/Virtual_Fax

What I often ask myself on this is:

A. How many folks are still even USING Facsimile in this day and age of
PDF/Internet; and the reverse:
B. What do you do when the Interwebs go down? An EMP will fry both the
internet AND the copper over Fibre TELCO nodes. So, once again, there will just
be a few of us who have our rigs in a Farraday cage who can talk to anyone,
should the worst happen.
C. All of the above, be it Zombie Apocalypse, Widespread EMP, some MAJOR
hub/node being blown up, I firmly believe (being a big fan of TEOTWAWKI
fiction*) that most folks will be too busy fighting off their formerly friendly
neighbors to be able to provide disaster comms, and calling for help will prove
fruitless as most folks within range will be under the same personal
constraints.

Yah, I agree, I am taking a ‘glass half empty’ stance.. Sorry.. lol

Understandable. That is why I have unlimited data on my cell phone so

Glad our new provider is Tachus as they are 100% fiber. As long as
their generator at their office is working, we will have internet.
Good thing about light is that you do not need to keep amplifying it
downstream.

We went to VoIP with MagicJack a long time ago when they first
started. We keep it unplugged unless we want to make an outbound call.
No spam calls that way and all our friends have our cell numbers.

Re: [BVARC] the phase out of landline phone service

2024-02-13 Thread Jeff Greer via BVARC
Fiber is nice. Until someone digs a ditch and cuts it. Been there, done that.
All of my warehouses now have 2 separate Internet connections coming in on
disparate infrastructure, so when we lose one, we don't waste a day not
shipping product.

Glad our new provider is Tachus as they are 100% fiber. As long as their
generator at their office is working, we will have internet. Good thing about
light is that you do not need to keep amplifying it downstream.

We went to VoIP with MagicJack a long time ago when they first started. We keep
it unplugged unless we want to make an outbound call. No spam calls that way
and all our friends have our cell numbers.

Re: [BVARC] the phase out of landline phone service

2024-02-08 Thread Robert Polinski via BVARC
They are not phasing out landlines, just copper POTS lines. Landlines still
come in other forms, by way of fiber or coax. The cost of installing and
maintaining copper wires, 1 pr from your house to the switching station,
where it is converted to fiber anyway, is very high. The only advantage of a
POTS line is that it goes to a fixed location, which can be easily located
by the 911 system. All other phone connections are VOIP. The phone or IP
address must offer a location, ether by a connected GPS (most cell phones)
or by a firmware programmed into the phone. A hi rise bldg. with 600 POTS
lines needs a 600 pr cable to serve it all the way back to the exchange.
With VOIP needs only 1 fiber cable. If you have a new subdivision that has
FTTH (fiber to the home) that has 1000 homes, current regulations require
the POTS carrier to provide copper pair, even though few if any will use
them. Lots of money installed for few users. The reason to change the
regulations is so if every on the block has some source of internet service,
byway of fiber, coax or wireless, and you still use a POTS line and the 100
pr cable fails on your street, they do not have to replace the cable, just
put fiber in an a VOIP phone or VOIP to POTS converter. I like POTS lines,
but times change & so does equipment. Robert KD5YVQ

I heard this story in the news this week.. that landline phones were being

infrastructural crisis. so this story just adds that extra validation of the
