Re: CMS opinion?

Can't Magento be used as a CMS as well? Cake can also be used to
manage certain areas of the other packages if you modify the useTable
information. There were a few blog posts I read when I was starting
with CakePHP that discussed how to do it with Wordpress (for example).

Personally, I like the ideas behind Expression Engine, though I've
never tried it. Honestly, since it uses CodeIgniter, it might be
easier to fix errors with it too since CodeIgniter and CakePHP follow
similar ideals (though still different enough to have a separate
following).

I would, however, be careful using too many separate applications for
a single site.

All of my CakePHP work to date has been a CMS of one sort or another.
I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I should be using an off the shelf
CMS instead, at least for some of the projects (some are too bespoke
 to reasonably do that).

While I've looked at Drupal, Joomla etc. the arguments for and against
them all seem even more acrimonious and biased than those for
 frameworks.

So, what I'm thinking is a lot of you must have experience using a CMS
and I want to hear some rational fors/againsts. I'm looking for
something that will handle complex sites, not something embryonic like
 Wildflower (sorry).

As for eCommerce, I'm looking at Magento as it seems most likely to
complement my Cake skills (being built in Zend). If someone knows of a
Cake eCommerce, or wants to collaborate to port one to Cake, let me
 know.

Well, it _is_ a CMS, albeit a specialized one.

There is a project called Jake - has Cake as a module to Joomla, but
the website hasn't been updated for two years.

I'll have a look at that. I'm really surprised there isn't more use of
MVC in CMSs (Whatever happened to the craze for TLAs? There was some
mention of Joomla using Cake, but that seems to have faded away.

I would, however, be careful using too many separate applications for
 a single site.

I quite agree.
