Re: searching for a newsletter component

2007-05-08 Thread Adam Royle

I suggest going the hosted route as well. I use a company in Australia
called Vision 6. I have used a few others as well. Most companies who
do this have an API that you can connect to as well, so if you want
your own custom signup form you can, and have it hook into their
system from your cakephp app.

Cheers,
Adam

As for european solution, I don't know of any of the top of my head.
Both services are quite cheap. I think campaignmonitor is $5.00 U.S. +
$0.05 U.S. for each email recipient beyond the first 5 ( they let you
set up a 5 person test list for each send for free )

If this causes additional costs for my customer, i guess it's not

Regarding the load, well i heavily doubt that the community will grow
far beyond 1000 Users. The mailer will of course not send 1000 emails
  at once.

When you say newsletter component or plugin, what do you think that
should contain?

sorry, my question is not so much cake related.
i mean a mass mail mechanism which integrates with the
cake architecture esp. class_phpmailer.php

in the meantime i found phplist, if you have any experiences
with this, please let me know.

I've tried to stay away from building spam components, hurts my

I can spell newsletter just fine, thanks. When you say mass mail,
you're talking about code that loops through a list of names and then
send out email to each person on the list, right?

So you're looking for a bunch of admin screens to make up content and
administer the people on the list, right? It could be used by
spammers, that's for sure. One person's newsletter full of stock
tips is another's unwanted spam. I worked for an industry that
specialized in spam, so I feel I'm uniquely qualified to label
mass-mailing tools as spamming tools. Feel free to disagree.

Sounds too complicated to be just a component or plugin, more like a
full application.

chris,
if i had the choice i would go for Majordomo or another
decent list manager. But i have to deal with shared
hosting.
i'll check out phplist and see if i can integrate it into
the framework.
cheers, jyrgen

Re: searching for a newsletter component

2007-05-06 Thread abba bryant

Instead of putting the load of sending the emails on your shared host ( who
might well disagree with your newsletter is not spam philosophy ) why not
use a service like constantcontact or campaignmonitor? They handle
subscriber / unsubscriber and the legal issue with mass email and both of
them have an api for embedding their functionality into other pages / apps
