Yes, I liked the design of that site, so I tried to do something like
that.
Design is full of copying, everybody takes ideas from other

Hi Rohman,

That is a very nice site, well done. I am just starting with CakePHP so it
is nice to see more and more results using it.

The only thing I have noticed is that in FireFox 2.0 the pages seem to get
cut off.

Here is a screen shot.

Well done, nice looking site .. Actually I always wanted to do this
effect (freezing the background with opacity while you display the
pictures), but never had time to dig in it.. How easy it is ?

Thanks and great work

Re: my little peace of Cake

2007-06-05 Thread 浪漫様

Is not really dificult to do that effect, but takes sooo many time if
you want to do it with some professional style. So I just used that
Javascript library: http://orangoo.com/labs/GreyBox . Is pretty easy
to use and you will save lot of time. If you want to do it manually,
you should think on creating a DIV that takes all the explorer's size,
give it some transparency/opacity style in some way you wish and load
a picture inside it... the buttons to close and navigations is quite
easy to do, just simple AJAX calls to update the DIV... but as I told
you, it would take you some time, and also it could have some bugs or
not look very professional, so if you don't mind using plug-ins, try
that GreyBox.
By the way, thanks for your comment, glad you like the site.

Designed for IE ??? That won't win you many kudos points ;).

Looks nice apart from the significant what-if-Im-not-using-IE
background problem.

Unless you are going to write about cake, you should probably move it
on the ' Cake Apps/Sites In The Wild page' to Sites - before Mariano
deletes it again.

Cheers,

 Best Regards,

I like the design, mate good job, I don't like the attitude though!
why deisgn for only 50% of people?
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp - Firefox has a
30%+ share now, how can you ignore that? Plus, FireFox is a better
browser than IE, lots of development places will use FF first and IE
second (to check IE hasn't broken perfectly good pages), so any
possible employers may well be put off by the fact your site doesn't
display correctly.

My advice would be to always design/build for the standards-compliant
browsers (firefox, camino, safari etc) first, then move on to making
specific IE only changes in IE only stylesheets (google IE conditional
comment css).

Another thing it's always worth doing (especially if you're looking
for work) would be to validate your pages, get rid of these errors and
you may find your css behaves better in FireFox.

http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://www.rohmansama.com/registros

Your CSS validates ok:

http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rohmansama.com%2Fregistroswarning=1profile=css21usermedium=all

I would install the FireBug plugin for FireFox
http://www.getfirebug.com/ and the web developer toolbar
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/60 - combined these are
a lifesaver!

Sorry to sound down on your site, it's not how it's meant!

cheers,

Jon

ermm, firefox is free, were you unable to download it or something ;)

Seriously though, if you're looking for work as a web designer /
front-end type chap (from your site it looks like you are), you're
hampering your chances no end by not being aware of issues like
cross-browser testing.

I suggest some reading:

finished. So your story really encourages me to push it along. Thanks.

Re: my little peace of Cake

2007-06-05 Thread 浪漫様

Hello Haiyang,
Thanks for your comment, i'm glad that you liked my site.
Well, I had been coding website for around 9 years, most of them in
PHP.
Yes, it took me only 2 weeks, even there are still some little bugs to
fix.
About how to manage the languages... is quite easy... I have a PHP
file for each language, with text variables on it... for example:

english.php
  $lguser = 'User';
  $lgname = 'Name: ';
spanish.php
  $lguser = 'Usuario';
  $lgname = 'Nombre: ';

So in the views [ HTML ] i include the language file depending on the
user's selection - ?php include($language); ? and instead of
showing static text I use the variables on those language files...
easy, right? ; )

hey rohman,
i had a look at the site and i think the problem with the background
can be solved if you clear the float. put a br style=clear:both
before the content wrapper div closes and you should be fine.
