2010-09-30 Thread Afkham Azeez
Team,
Can we please have some volunteers for the components currently without
volunteers? All these code is our code. It is perfectly OK to volunteer for
a component which you are not familiar with. You may take some time to
understand what that component is doing, but that itself will be an
advantage.

Thanks

Hi ,

I have run FindBugs for the bam component at very first stage when Azeez
starting this thread.
And i found 41 issues from FindBugs ,after fixing that bugs the remaining
bugs count was 4 , but after adding the new features
that remaining bugs count has increased to 22.

We have been able to fix *1277* issues during the past week! Excellent job!

There are a few more components which need to be run through FindBugs.
Pleased update this thread if you have not yet completed work on your
components. There are also some components for which nobody has volunteered.
It'd be great if more people could volunteer.

+1. I'd suggest that someone (perhaps someone new who likes to contribute to
Apache Projects), spend sometime to fix these issues in the templates that
are used to generate code, after the release-rush is over.

Leave mediation stats and ws-discovery for me :) You can look at
synapse-config-admin and transport-mgt if you want. But both these
components have very small amounts of code. Mostly admin services. So I
don't expect any major issues there.

  Hi,

Sample code is below. You need to import org.apache.commons.io.IOUtils.

FileInputStream fileInputStream = null;
OutputStream outputStream = null;
try {
outputStream = response.getOutputStream();
fileInputStream = new FileInputStream(file);
.
.

} catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
.
} catch (IOException e) {
   ..
} finally {
   IOUtils.closeQuietly(fileInputStream);
   IOUtils.closeQuietly(outputStream);
}

Hi,

I also encountered the same error in mashup components. But, I used the
commons-io for that. i.e.

org.apache.commons.io.IOUtils.closeQuietly(fileWriter);

where try-catch within the following final block has been wrapped within
IOUtils class. I decided to use above method as it gives us a more readable
code. I guess it is all right to use commons-io??

Re: [Carbon-dev] FindBugs hackathon on 23rd Sep 2010

2010-09-26 Thread Afkham Azeez
OK. I based my comments on some code I was looking at where there were
multiple methods in a single class, and in each method, some result sets
were traversed, and in a finally block, the result set & statement were
closed. In that type of code, I think it may not be necessary to close
result sets, but as a best practice, lets always close them.

Hi Azeez,

But it is good practice to close the ResultSet immediately after it is used,
rather than letting is automatically close when the Statement is closed
right at the end. Because also, from one Statement, there can be many result
sets and all those resources will be there till the end rather than being
cleaned up then and there after it is used.

Cheers,

Sure that is OK. But folks, we need to remember that writing quality code is
as much as, or more important, than simply releasing stuff. It is perfectly
OK to spend some extra time to think about how to implement something in a
better, and maintainable way. The long term benefits will be immense.

The returned value from sr.getLastNodeAllowedAccess() can have one
following possibilities.
1. Boolean.TRUE
2. Boolean.FALSE
3. Null
Null is used to propagate permissions across a hierarchy. i.e. if
particular node in the permission tree returns null for access, that
node's permission is decided by checking the value of its parent.
Therefore we are using wrapped Boolean class rather than primitive booleans.

Hi Azeez,

We'll be (tooling team) starting to fix issues from find bugs from tomorrow
onwards. Since the tooling code base is considerably huge & the looming
releases we cannot predict when we'll be able to finish it. Which would
probably mean it'll take more than this week.

Re: [Carbon-dev] FindBugs hackathon on 23rd Sep 2010

2010-09-26 Thread Supun Kamburugamuva
I went through following esb components and fixed the issues.
Remaining issues in these components are due to code generation.

proxy-admin
endpoint
localentry
priority mediation
message-relay

There are few issues left in mediation-initializer to be fixed.

Thanks,
Supun..

Please note that it is not necessary to close both the ResultSet and

Yes, there were many instances such as this which I fixed. Please don't
ignore "Method may fail to clean up stream or resource" errors.

Re: [Carbon-dev] FindBugs hackathon on 23rd Sep 2010

2010-09-24 Thread Sameera Jayasoma
FYI,

I've encountered the "Method may fail to clean up stream or resource" error
in the following method.

public void archiveFile(String from, String to) throws IOException {
FileInputStream in = new FileInputStream(from);
ZipOutputStream out = new ZipOutputStream(new FileOutputStream(to));
byte[] buffer = new byte[40960];
int bytesRead;
while ((bytesRead = in.read(buffer)) != -1) {
out.write(buffer, 0, bytesRead);
}
}

I fixed in the following manner.

public void archiveFile(String from, String to) throws IOException {
ZipOutputStream out = null;
FileInputStream in = new FileInputStream(from);
try {
out = new ZipOutputStream(new FileOutputStream(to));
byte[] buffer = new byte[40960];
int bytesRead;
while ((bytesRead = in.read(buffer)) != -1) {
out.write(buffer, 0, bytesRead);
}
} finally {
try {
in.close();
} catch (IOException e) {
log.warn("Unable to close the InputStream " +
e.getMessage(), e);
}

try {
if (out != null) {
out.close();
}
} catch (IOException e) {
log.warn("Unable to close the OutputStream " +
e.getMessage(), e);
}
}
}

IMV, we need to close streams in the above manner, otherwise output stream
won't get closed, if an error occurs while closing the input stream.

Thanks
Sameera

 Folks,
 I'd like to see more enthusiasm in this area. I'm sure that all of you
 agree with me that this exercise will have a long term benefit. Generally,
 tasks like this get pushed to the bottom since the immediate benefit may
 not
 be apparent.

 I'd like to request the following volunteers to dedicate some time *
 today* to finish off these items.

 1. Isuru
 2. Thilina
 3. Senaka
 4. Sameera
 5. Ruwan
 6. AmilaJ
 7. Ajith
 8. Rajika
 9. Ratha
 10. Shariq
 11. Kasun
 12. Hiranya
 13. Ruchira
 14. Supun
 15. Heshan
 16. Chathuri

 Unfortunately, there are many component which do not have any
 volunteers. At least the initial authors of these components should take
 ownership of these components! If anybody has issues, you could use the IRC
 channel to communicate your issues.

 Thanks

Please send SVN pointer to the class. It is difficult to fix some issues
like this without looking at all the code.

Why is the code written that way instead of, if
(sr.getLastNodeAllowedAccess()) {}. Such code needs to be fixed.

Re: [Carbon-dev] FindBugs hackathon on 23rd Sep 2010

2010-09-24 Thread Amila Jayasekara
Hi Azeez,
Sorry for the late response. I was involved in some other urgent task.
I fixed many find bugs issues in user.core and there were several which
i exclude. I would like to verify whether excluded rules are reasonable.

1. OBL_UNSATISFIED_OBLIGATION - Method may fail to clean up stream or
resource.
This occurs each time user core tries to do database transaction.
Sample code,

try {
prepStmt =
dbConnection.prepareStatement(DBConstants.ADD_PERMISSION_SQL); <
Complaining that this resource is not cleaned up
...
...
} catch (SQLException e) {
log.error("Error! " + e.getMessage(), e);
throw new UserStoreException("Error! " + e.getMessage(), e);
} finally {
DatabaseUtil.closeAllConnections(null, prepStmt); <--
Cleaning up will happened in this method
}

As you can see in above code, connections are closed in a separate
method. (DatabaseUtil.closeAllConnections(null, prepStmt)). But still
findbugs complains about OBL_UNSATISFIED_OBLIGATION rule violation. So i
am thinking this is because that findbugs is unable to analyze method
calls in finally block. (Also DatabaseUtil.closeAllConnections is not an
api method)
Correct me if i am wrong.

2. RC_REF_COMPARISON - Suspicious reference comparison
Sample code

if (sr.getLastNodeAllowedAccess() == Boolean.TRUE) {
return true;
}

This basically complains about comparison over Boolean.TRUE static
value. Our permission tree, code is heavily using Boolean.TRUE and
Boolean.FALSE variables. There are many places, which use above 2
variables. Changing those variables will affect many code paths. On the
other hand user core code is well tested and using, Boolean.TRUE,
Boolean.FALSE will not do any harm as they are static members in Boolean
class. So i am yet to decide whether to change this.
Feedback appreciated on this.

3. ODR_OPEN_DATABASE_RESOURCE - This is similar to in 1. Hope we can
ignore this since we call DatabaseUtil.closeAllConnections method.

4. URF_UNREAD_FIELD - Unread field
org.wso2.carbon.user.core.profile.DefaultProfileConfigurationManager
has a private field called "tenantId". This is initialized in
constructor but never read. Hope it is ok to remove this field. Also i
found an unused non private tenantId variable in
org.wso2.carbon.user.core/src/main/java/org/wso2/carbon/user/core/claim/DefaultClaimManager.java.

I removed that as well. (Not yet committed.)

I am in the process of doing some major changes to apacheds (with the
introduction of KDC) component. I am fixing findbugs issues, in parallel
to those changes. I will commit code once i am done.

Thanks
AmilaJ

2010-09-24 Thread Afkham Azeez
Codegen bugs are seen generally only in the UI bundles. If you look at the
spreadsheet, we have already fixed hundreds of real bugs. Yes, the code
generator generates a lot of garbage and we need to fix it. Amila, can you
take a look at it?

2010-09-24 Thread Afkham Azeez
Team,
There is no need to work on this during the weekend. We don't expect anybody
to work during the weekend, unless during crunch times. So, please don;t
work on this during the weekend. We only request you to give a bit more
priority for this and see that it gets done. If you
cannot work on this today, try to work on it early next week or as early as
possible. Make this one of the high priority tasks.

Have a great weekend!

Thanks

Please recheck. Sometimes FindBugs plugin report 0 bugs when the module is
not properly selected. You need to close all editor tabs and then run it on
the relevant module.

 I'd like to request the following volunteers to dedicate some time *

 Unfortunately, there are many component which do not have any

 channel to communicate your issues.

Sure no problems. Please make sure that the code review recommendations etc.
are incorporated. During the BAM review we did more than 9 months ago, we
found many fundamental issues, but those have not been addressed to date.
The excuse we got at that time was also the same one, sadly.

2010-09-24 Thread Sumedha Rubasinghe
Hi Azeez,
BAM team is on a hackathon to finish off some urgent client issues.
Tooling team is stuck with preparing a beta release for Monday.
Senaka has addressed most of the findbugs issues on Registry & he is also
unavailable today due some planned work.

Please excuse members from these teams.

Re: [Carbon-dev] FindBugs hackathon on 23rd Sep 2010

2010-09-23 Thread Afkham Azeez
I'm sorry to say this, but I've been getting this "we are in a tight release
schedule" excuse from BAM team all the time. When we had the last code
review many months back, I got the same excuse, and still those
recommendations have not been incorporated. That code needed a lot of
improvement. I don't know why everybody is in a hurry to ship the code and
not too worried about quality!

There is no need for everybody to sit in one place and do this. We have the
IRC channel now. It is as good as being f2f. The plan was for everybody to
allocate sometime on a given date and finish it off once and for all.

IDEA uses should use the FindBugs-IDEA plugin. If the plugin UI starts

Re: [Carbon-dev] FindBugs hackathon on 23rd Sep 2010

2010-09-23 Thread Afkham Azeez
Folks,
I'd like to see more enthusiasm in this area. I'm sure that all of you agree
with me that this exercise will have a long term benefit. Generally, tasks
like this get pushed to the bottom since the immediate benefit may not be
apparent.

I'd like to request the following volunteers to dedicate some time
*today*to finish off these items.

1. Isuru
2. Thilina
3. Senaka
4. Sameera
5. Ruwan
6. AmilaJ
7. Ajith
8. Rajika
9. Ratha
10. Shariq
11. Kasun
12. Hiranya
13. Ruchira
14. Supun
15. Heshan
16. Chathuri

Unfortunately, there are many component which do not have any volunteers. At
least the initial authors of these components should take ownership of these
components! If anybody has issues, you could use the IRC channel to
communicate your issues.

Thanks
Azeez
