[cayugabirds-l] Blue-headed Mallards
Today I was in Union Springs about 2:00 on my way to give a couple of piano lessons and I swung by the Mill Pond on Rte 90. A group of Mallards had collected in the NE corner of the pond, and the light was just right to turn the heads on all of them a lovely deep blue, some of them a purple blue, with no hint of green on any of them--a beautiful combination with their yellow bills. Like a photograph that had the one color altered. On my return trip a male in the company of a female in the middle of the pond was bobbing his head in a courtship display. I did not have time to scope out (with bins) the hundreds of waterfowl on the edge of the ice down on the lake, but it looked like it could be interesting. Lots of Robins around the past few days. Have heard them making various calls and squawks but not singing yet. Have not heard any Cardinals singing yet either. Am enjoying a flock of Horned Larks that moved into my neighborhood in the past ten days after being so scarce all winter. Also seeing a few Snow Buntings on Skillet Road when I go to Auburn from the south. Neighborhood Kestrels and Red-tailed Hawks and Mockingbirds are good company as well, and the Great-horned Owls can be heard most nights. [cayugabirds-l] Taughannock gorge Ravens and Pergrine
Mary Jean, Phil and I took a walk back the gorge trail at Taughannock this afternoon. Saw two RAVENS, one of which carried a stick to a crevasse below the overlook point. Then, near the falls, we saw a PEREGRINE FALCON perching and flying along the north wall. [cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods and SHort-eared Owls
Hi all, After almost 5.5 months, I took my Sapsucker Woods lunch walk (but on skis). I did all trails and some twice. I did come across many birds, which I used to do in the past. Hoards of chicakdees, but was looking for my friend "KRAP" but did not see him, but did see other banded chickadees (Y-BlueK, RP-k etc) most of whom I did not reconize any, but was glad to see them. On Pileated trail, I did see a Pileated slinking away into the woods and other three species Red-bellied, Downy and Hairy along with a Brown Creeper and WB nuthatches. At the entrance of the Dryden trail from CLO parking lot, I heard a weezy call. Then a full song, so stopped to look at the songster, a still drab looking American Golfinch! He seemed as if telling me that here I am and you are not nocticing me. At lean to in the pines there was lot of activity going on. So I stopped to listen to singing Tufted Timouse and a fight between a Tufted Timouse and a chickadee. While watching the two fight something landed below my eye level on the bark just 6 feet away, A very cute BROWN CREEPER. I wished I was carrying my camera. He searched for insects and did find something just above my head level. He flew across to a tree behind me, passing just a feet from me. On Wilson trail, I did see usual Tree Sparrows and White Throated Sparrows taking a drink and bath at the foot bridge stream. Tufted Titmouse were signing all over the woods. A couple of chickadees were also singing. I heard something which sounded very much like a spring peeper. I am not sure what that creature was. It was a beautiful sunny day but was still cool for peepers to be out. It was nice to be out there. I could say whcih tree has fallen or what has changed on the trail in last six months. I also realized how much I have been missing my lunch walks! Later in the evening I went to Ovid to look for Redtails and Short-eared owls. I did see a couple of them where Marty had seen previously. One landed on a fence post some hundred feet way from me and watched the surrounding for some times. Another one sat on a hay bale much furhter away was also inspecting the surroundings. It was a nice day be out there! [cayugabirds-l] eagles & ducks, southwest Cayuga Lake
This afternoon I took a brief bike trip to the southwest corner of Cayuga Lake. I had to stop enroute at Cass Park to identify a raptor circling high over West Hill: an immature BALD EAGLE. Later from my vantage on the west shore of the lake I watched an adult BALD EAGLE fly from the vicinity of the white lighthouse west to the Hog Hole. It was carrying an unidentified piece of carrion with strips of apparent skin dangling and meat showing, and it appeared to try to take a bite in flight. It was followed for awhile by several hopeful (or possibly aggrieved) gulls. The only gulls I could discern in flight, on the water, or on the ice were the usual RING-BILLED, HERRING, and GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS. Waterfowl on the lake included CANADA GEESE, GADWALL (few, mainly swimming near ice edge), AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, MALLARD (plenty in water and loafing on shore), REDHEAD (predominant), CANVASBACK, GREATER & LESSER SCAUP, RING-NECKED DUCK (a few males), BUFFLEHEAD (I think 2 males and 2 females in with Aythya), COMMON GOLDENEYE (out on lake), COMMON MERGANSER (at least 1 male out on lake), RUDDY DUCK (at least 1 winter male and 2 females in with Aythya). Among birds in brush around nearby feeders I heard a possible PINE SISKIN once but could not confirm it. Elaina, keep your eyes open for it! --Dave Nutter -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] feeder birds
Aside from the usually expected winter species I had a BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD show up at my feeders this morning. The EVENING GROSBEAK is still hanging around, and gave Shannon goods looks at a life bird for her this morning. Cayugabirders, The Greater White-fronted Goose continued this morning at Myers Point in Lansing. It was initially quite close inside the lighthouse marina but moved over to Ladoga Point eventually.
