[cayugabirds-l] Peregrine Falcon, downtown Ithaca

3:40pm Sat 11 Dec Bill Baker just called to say there's a PEREGRINE FALCON perched on one of the lower steeples of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on the corner of North Geneva and West Seneca Streets in downtown Ithaca.  He said it was on the southwest sub-steeple.  --Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] LITTLE GULL northwestern Cayuga Lake

2010-12-11 Thread Dave Nutter
3:13pm Sat 11 Dec Tim Lenz reported an adult LITTLE GULL on the ice on Lower Lake Rd.  Although he said "in Canoga" I think he may be refering to the next settlement north of Canoga, just inside the Town of Seneca Falls along NYS 89 called Bridgeport.  I believe Lower Lake Rd goes past the Cayuga Lake State Park boat ramp.  --Dave Nutter

2010-12-11 Thread Dave Nutter
Yard bird!!  Actually, I was able to scope it through trees from my dining room window, and my non-birder wife and son saw it too.  About 4:05 pm it flew, though.  Thanks, Bill!  This was a much better view than Bradfield Hall would've been.  Everyone else, keep your eyes peeled for a Peregrine Falcon downtown.  --Dave NutterOn Dec 11, 2010, at 12:44 PM, Dave Nutter wrote:3:40pm Sat 11 Dec Bill Baker just called to say there's a PEREGRINE FALCON perched on one of the lower steeples of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on the corner of North Geneva and West Seneca Streets in downtown Ithaca.  He said it was on the southwest sub-steeple.  --Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] King Eider 12/11/110

2010-12-11 Thread Jerry Lazarczyk
Afer three misses I finally got the King Eider off the Red Lighthouse with Doug
Beattie of Bethany NY. Got a huge boost and moral support from David Nutter.
Thank you David. Great information. Thank you for dogging this outstanding
bird. It was about a 200 yard look, no comparison with those 12 foot and 15
foot looks from the boathouse in Falls Creek. But it feels good. About 4:20 to
4:30PM. It was still there when we left, following a Common Merganzer

[cayugabirds-l] Birds Today 12-11-10: King Eider, Glaucous Gull, Iceland Gull, Cackling Goose, Short-Eared Owl and hundreds of Robins.

2010-12-11 Thread david nicosia
What a great day. Started at Stewart Park around 11 am and found the KING EIDER
immediately and exactly where many others had it the last couple days...between
the Red and White
"Lighthouses" next to the rocks. Thanks to all for the posts and almost daily
updates. What
a great bird. The bird was actively swimming and diving and occasionally
resting with mallards and others. I got two fuzzy distant digi-scoped images.
Not great
photos by any means...but good enough to tell it is a king eider.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/davenicosia/5252643039/

http://www.flickr.com/photos/davenicosia/5252642885/

Then, I had the good fortune of running into Ken Rosenberg and Kevin McGowen at
Stewart. Ken pointed out the GLAUCOUS GULL that was found earlier by Tim Lenz
and Kevin found the ICELAND GULL- Two species I am unfamilar with. There were
also many RING-BILLED, HERRING and GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS. Also
present was 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL-- that makes 6 species of gulls at
Stewart!  Kevin then found a single CACKLING GOOSE among the many Canadas.
There were also many REDHEADs, COMMON MERGANSERS,
several COMMON GOLDENEYES, several HOODED MERGANSERS, many
MALLARDS and BLACK DUCKS, and a single fly-by RING-NECKED DUCK.

Later, went on the Short-Eared Owl trip led by Ann Mitchell to Rafferty Road
with
fellow Binghamton area birders, Nancy Morgan, Mary Ann and Courtney Moore.
After some time, 1 SHORT EARED OWL was found in the distance flying
around just after sunset. Prior to sunset, one of the highlights at Rafferty
were hundreds of AMERICAN ROBINS flying by to the north. There
were also several HORNED LARKS, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, AMERICAN
TREE SPARROWS, MOCKINGBIRDS, 1 fly-by NORTHERN FLICKER
and at least 1 RED-TAILED HAWK.

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Lake Saturday: Little Gull, etc, etc

2010-12-11 Thread Hope Batcheller
Hi all,

Tim Lenz, Andy Johnson, and I spend the afternoon birding around
Cayuga Lake. We primarily worked the west side, though the east side
offered a few owl-related treats on the way back.

We started at Stewart Park, where we had an adult Lesser Black-backed
Gull and juv. Glaucous Gull. The King Eider was resting on the jetty.
Others include a Horned Grebe and 2 Red-breasted Mergansers fairly far
out, and spectacular views of a Red-tailed Hawk consuming a coot wing.

Continuing up the lake, we had a Cackling Goose hanging with a group
of Canadas resting on the shore at Wyer's Pt. There were also several
flocks with 1000+ Snow Geese each farther out, with more Snow Geese
flying in regularly.

Lower Lake Rd. was loaded with interesting things. The highlight was
an adult Little Gull flying on the far side of the lake. Not great
views, but the dark underwing was very prominent. The bird was
circling and foraging, dropping down to the water several times. Other
highlights here include 15 Bonaparte's Gulls, Red-throated Loon, a
flock of 4500+ Snow Geese, 350+ Redheads, a flock of 16 flyover Common
Redpolls, and assorted Tundra Swans, Common and Hooded Mergansers,
Ring-necked Duck, Greater Scaup, Canvasback, American Wigeon, etc.

On our way back south, the Union Springs Ea. Screech-Owl gave nice
views. We also had a Short-eared Owl flying around Lake Rd. near the
Long Point Winery. Finally, to cap off the owls for a day, a
cooperative Great Horned Owl was sitting on a phone pole along the
road.

All in all, a very enjoyable day of birding!
