[cayugabirds-l] meadowlarks

2011-03-20 Thread Susan Fast
I just counted 9 E. MEADOWLARKS in an open field in Brooktondale. I think a
lot of early ones go unnoticed unless they stand up or perch and sing.
These were low to the ground, foraging, and the yellow rarely showed.

[cayugabirds-l] Surf Scoter & Tree Swallows, rumors of Black Scoter & Eurasian Wigeons

2011-03-20 Thread Dave Nutter
When Tim Lenz sent out an RBA about a Black Scoter seen from Lower Lake Road in Bridgeport, Ann Mitchell & I decided to detour that direction.  We found lots of waterfowl and excellent viewing conditions.  There was flat water, no shimmer, and the birds were not blocking the view of each other.  However they were swimming back and forth, and some were sleeping, and some were diving, and lots were flying in and out of the area near Lower Lake Rd and NYS-89, which was all a bit distracting.  We did not find Tim's first year male Black Scoter, but we did find a female SURF SCOTER among the Aythya (all 5 species), American Wigeon, Gadwall, Green-winged Teal, Snow Geese, etc.  Tim also mentioned a Eurasian Wigeon he'd seen distantly from the Cayuga Lake State Park boat ramp, and we missed that, too, but we did meet a fellow who said he'd seen one at Stewart Park around 11:30 this morning, so keep an eye out for that.  On our way home along NYS-89 just south of the Fayette-Varick town line we saw at least 5 TREE SWALLOWS flying around the barns of a farm.--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] lost monocular

2011-03-20 Thread Judy Read
I seem to have lost a brand new Vortex monocular either at Stewart Park/Renwick
or CLO parking lot.

Bought it so I'd always have something with me when I hike and thought I'd try
it out today. Then switched to binoculars so I didn't miss it not hanging from
my jeans.

I can sweeten the deal with a homemade apple pie to the finder.

Please contact me off list if anyone finds it.

Thank you,
Judy Read

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vulture's breakfast

2011-03-20 Thread Watt W. Webb
Saturday a.m.surprise: a flight of about 6 to 8 Vultures, mostly
Turkey circled our hilly areaway above east side of Cayuga Lake for
about an hour. Then I discovered 6 of them in our garden bushes and
and trees consuming remains of several small 4 legged bodies out on
theatgrass near the trees for an hour or 2. Later in the day and
still today I noticed several Vultures continuing to scope the whole
hillside from lake shore to hill tops.

On a new note our first Robins have arrived yesterday evening and
the Goldfinch crowd has began to show bright gold colors.

The usual spring flow of Northern Mockingbirds with their
distinctive, repetitive songs have not caught my attention yet, tho'
the weather seems right. I will have to listen on the hills to watch
their usual up-hill spring drift and expression of mating calls.

The Mockingbirds have begun their chanting songs in the treetops
along Teeter Road in Lansing high above Cayuga Lake at about noon
today. By their definition spring has come!

[cayugabirds-l] Fw: PineSiskins &Common Redpolls

Suddenly my feeders have about 12 Pine Siskins and 8 Common Redpolls
voraciously feeding at three feeders, on Nyjer seed and Agway's Finch Delight
mix. I have not seen a Siskin or Redpoll at these feeders all winter, so I am
extremely surprised, and pleased to find them now.
