[cayugabirds-l] Vesper Sparrow, Dryden Lake

2011-04-15 Thread Jay McGowan
Not much on Dryden Lake or George Road this morning (though I heard word
there were a bunch of gulls, probably Bonaparte's, on Dryden Lake before I
got there.) I also flushed a VESPER SPARROW off the road on Chaffee Road at
Dryden Lake.

FOX SPARROWS have been singing up a storm on Beam Hill the last few days.
Today Purple Finch, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and Winter Wren joined them.

Good birding.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] blue-headed vireo

2011-04-15 Thread Eric Banford
Cool, I heard one too on my way to the bus this morning (at 7:40 if it matters
as a basin first). Also year firsts for me were Fox Sparrow and White Crowned
Sparrows both vocalizing in the same area. Add in Cardinal, Phoebe, Junco, and
Purple Finch, and the air was *full* of beautiful song!

[cayugabirds-l] Caspian Terns, Pectoral Sandpipers, and more.

2011-04-15 Thread Mark Miller
A quick run through Montezuma brought fewer ducks than last couple weeks but
did see 15 Caspian Terns and about a dozen Pectoral Sandpipers,
all in the new shorebird pool (before curve). East Road, Van Dyne Spoor
Railroad roads had a lot of Wood Ducks, DC Cormorants, 1 Horned Grebe,
and a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers (at Van Dyne Spoor Rd turnaround). Not much
at the MAC except a Sandhill Crane putting on a display for himself.

[cayugabirds-l] Upcoming Monday Night Seminar: John Marzluff

2011-04-15 Thread charles eldermire
Hope you can make it!

Monday, April 18, 2011 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM
The surprising behavior of crows by John Marzluff
(online flyer: http://goo.gl/6jwqy)

Do crows really talk, give gifts, and use surfboards? Of course they do, and so
much more! During this seminar, John will explore and discuss some of
the amazing feats that crows and ravens are reknown for, investigating their
biological bases and implications for how we share the world with another
species that often gets our ire. Much of what John will discuss stems from the
contributions of citizen observers.

Speaker Info:
John Marzluff
Professor, Wildlife Science
University of Washington

Monday Night Seminars were originally conceived by Lab founder Dr. Arthur A.
Allen as a venue for sharing the complex world of science in a format aimed at
a public audience. Seminars typically begin at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7:00
p.m.) in the Visitors’ Center Auditorium. As always, admission is free and open
to all.
