[cayugabirds-l] Willow Crossing at noon

I stopped at the corner of Willow Crossing and Purvis Rd. just after 
noon.  I parked on Purvis near the little boggy areas on both sides of 
the road.

Nothing new to report but it was delightful. Lots of singing going on.
Some new ones for me this year:

3 Northern Waterthrush, 2 on the south side of Purvis, and one on north 
side.

Common Yellowthroat
Yellow Warbler
Nashville (nice looks at it)
Many White-throated Sparrows
Catbird
Golden-crowned Kinglet way up high in an evergreen tree.

in the Mundy Wildflower Garden today. I don't recall anyone posting

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma request

Taking advantage of the warm weather, Larry and I went up the lake today 
to verify directions to certain birding spots for the soon to be updated 
Birds of Cayuga Basin Guide.  After reading all of the posts, I think we 
should have stayed in town and done some local birding!  However, we 
persevered--even through tremendous downpours of mid-afternoon rain.  
Our problem is, as we were taking our final measurement along route 89 
and heading back route 5/20, the rains had caused an electric pole to 
come down, and we had to detour off of route 89 and onto E. Tyre Road, 
instead of joining route 5/20.  If anyone is going to Montezuma area--or 
route 89--we need the _precise_ distance on route 89 from routes 5/20 to 
where E. Tyre Road goes off to the West.  We can then add this 
measurement to our total distance to some of the birding guide routes.  
Anytime in the next two weeks would be great and you can email me off 
line.  We hate to make a 'special' trip, with the price of gas, just to 
measure what is approximately .75 of a mile, and can probably use that 
as an estimate, but we would like to be precise!

Hi All,
Gary and I went there after work. We had to wait until the storms passed. We
finally received a window of time to bird. (Better safe than killed by
binos.) The Brown Thrasher was a car bird while waiting. There was a total
of 6 Brown Thrashers, which Gary is posting on ebird. We went to Stuart's
spot. The vireo was not around. We walked around the trails.  As we were
coming back up the loop, near Stu's sticks, we heard the Vireo.  It was west
of where it was earlier and on the right side of the trail.  We also had
2 Catbirds. I heard a Prairie Warbler sing once.

[cayugabirds-l] Chimney Swifts are back

Our CHIMNEY SWIFTS are back finally!  We had a dozen or so flying over the 
house tonight.  Other birds in my yard tonight included NORTHERN FLICKER, WB 
NUTHATCH, pair of CARDINALS, T. TITMOUSE, pair of ROBINS, A. CROW, MOURNING 
DOVE, distant gulls, and chickadees.  But I'm especially glad about the return 
of the humble chimney swifts...perhaps because no one else took notice of them?

[cayugabirds-l] snow goose in dryden

I checked only a few Dryden spots on the way home with nothing remarkable to 
report (no warblers or shorebirds).  Best bird I had was a white SNOW GOOSE 
with about 150 or more Canada Geese in corn stubble on the west side of Irish 
Settlement Rd, just south of rt 13.  I did check the Canadas to see if 
something else might be tucked in there, but didn't find anything in a quick 
scan.

[cayugabirds-l] Beebe Lake: Chestnut-sided, Warbling and BH Vireo

Hi all,
I got out to Beebe Lake briefly this morning before class (around 9:30) and 
came across a good influx of migrants.  There was a single male CHESTNUT-SIDED 
warbler, several Yellow-rumpeds and Pines, as well as one each of WARBLING and 
BLUE-HEADED vireos.  There were also 3 Brown Thrashers in the neighborhoods 
east of the lake, and more singing Ruby-crowned Kinglets than I've heard in a 
while.

I can add a couple of species.  Around 10am I found a singing BLUE-WINGED 
WARBLER on the Wilson Trail near the foot bridge and at 2:30pm I found a 
singing BROWN CREEPER by the Podell Boardwalk.

[cayugabirds-l] South Hill rec. pathway migrants

  South Hill was full of new migrants this morning, probably the result of the 
warm front that has blessed us today.  An hour walk heading south on the rec. 
trail from the playground area produced large groups of WHITE-THROATED 
SPARROWS, probably over 50 in one location at one point, 3 flyover BROAD-WINGED 
HAWKS, 1 OSPREY, singing HOUSE WREN, 1 BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 1 RED-BREASTED 
NUTHATCH, lots of BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES, a few TUFTED TITMICE, 1 RED-BREASTED 
NUTHATCH, 1 GRAY CATBIRD, 1 BROWN THRASHER, and a nice assortment of warblers, 
including 3 OVENBIRDS, 1 BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, 1 male BLACK-THROATED BLUE 
WARBLER, and 1 singing YELLOW WARBLER.  It seems as if all the EASTERN TOWHEES 
are back on territory singing, as are most of the CHIPPING SPARROWS, which were 
both seen throughout my walk.  The real surprise was the number of RUBY-CROWNED 
KINGLETS.  After dipping on them completely so far this year, I had at least 9 
individuals at multiple locations along the trail.  Al!
 so!
!
, while walking onto campus, there was another GRAY CATBIRD just below the 
public safety building.

  I had some but by no means all of the species in Sapsucker Woods reported
by Mark.

  Additions were

  Great Crested Flycatcher - one on the northeast leg of the Severinghaus
trail

  Blue-headed Vireo - 1 singing where Severinghaus and Wilson trails join

  Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - edge of the pond, north of the Podell boardwalk

  Brown Thrasher - in brush between the "Frog Barn" (south of the southern
part of the East trail) and Sapsucker Woods road;
   one (same bird?) was giving snatches of song yesterday morning at the
east end of the Frog Barn pond.

  Gray Catbird here as well, and multiple catbirds along lower Sapsucker
Woods Road, waterthrush singing from behind my house in northeast Ithaca,
Ovenbird singing at home, etc.

[cayugabirds-l] sign of spring!

I can tell when spring has arrived when all of a sudden the post count from
Cayugabirds-L explodes and takes over my gmail. HOORAY!!

In today's extraordinary heat wave a trio of two male and 1 female
Purple Finches visited my feeders. The color of those males was amazing!!
That is the only new bird today, though I expect there would have been more
had I not slept in this morning.

Bluebirds are nest-building in one of our boxes.

[cayugabirds-l] Morning surprises

Migration is so much fun.

I think that no one reported Common Yellowthroat, Blackburnian Warbler, 
or Broad-winged Hawk for all of last week at the lab seminar. Well, 
guess what we saw in our lawn this morning: both warblers and a pair of 
Broad-winged Hawks. Well, two broad-wings that arrived and left the lawn 
together, which may be a pair. "Lawn" is used loosely. Our backyard is 
contiguous to the southern edge of Hammond HiIl State Forest and is part 
of a very large forested area.

Well...that's frustrating. My message didn't come through until more than an 
hour later.

Just got back to find that my message wasn't there...then, poof, it appeared.

Anyway, here are more details: after a little over an hour of watching the 
skies over the Cornell Business and Technology Park by the Tompkins Regional 
Airport, Pete Marchetto and I spotted the following migrants:

23+ Broad-winged Hawks
1 Red-tailed Hawk
1 Unidentified Buteo
3 Cooper's Hawks
3 Sharp-shinned Hawks
12 OSPREY
10 Turkey Vultures
2 Northern Harriers
2 BALD EAGLES (1 adult being dive-bombed by an Osprey at 12:52pm, promptly 
followed by 1 immature at 12:53pm).

I'm sure there were more up there, but I don't think there's much more than a 
couple of hours before the rain showers might hit us. Everything was moving 
very high in an ENE passage.

Also present before and around this time were a single singing male 
BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, 2+ Yellow Warblers, 2+ Ruby-crowned Kinglets, 1 low 
flyover Chimney Swift, and several Yellow-rumped Warblers; plus, two female 
Buffleheads on the main pond at the Business and Tech Park.

* COMMON YELLOWTHROAT under power lines, Dryden side
* YELLOW WARBLER along Wilson Trail North
* at least 60 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS at Hermit Thrush spot along East Trail (this
tally triggered the coveted eBird "confirm" prompt)
* at least 3 GRAY CATBIRDS along the Wilson Trail North (also got the
"confirm" prompt)
* male PILEATED WOODPECKER feeding on root mass of fallen tree by
Goldsworthy cairn

[cayugabirds-l] Belated report: Brown Thrasher

Was surprised to see what looked like an overgrown female Cardinal in the tray 
of my "dome" feeder last Tuesday.  Pecking away like a chicken and looking 
furtively around, was a Brown Thrasher.   As I approached the window it and 
what I assumed to be its mate, on the ground, flew into the nearby hedge and 
haven't been seen since.  Purple Finches have been abundant for a week now.    
One female comes very early each morning--hope she becomes a resident.

[cayugabirds-l] Newman Arboretum - poss Baltimore Oriole

Stunned by the appearance of a strange, bright object in the sky, I headed to 
Newman Arboretum for some photography. While video-ing Red-winged Blackbirds 
displaying, females calling, American Robins singing, and Northern Flicker 
foraging on the ground, I twice heard a bright song that could only have been a 
Baltimore Oriole. But in neither case could I confirm it visually. Given that 
Tom Hoebbel (I think) posted one this morning, and the arrival of so many 
migrants since last night, it would not be surprising.

Also there, Brown Thrasher singing, several Yellow Warblers, flyover Fish Crow, 
and many of the usual suspects.

[cayugabirds-l] excitement from my window

Hi all -  from 7 am as I like to watch the news on TV, my gaze was turned to
my window. Right outside is a tube sunflower seed feeder & suet cake. On the
tube feeder was a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak and there was a male
red-bellied woodpecker on the suet and at the tube came 4 Purple Finch plus
8 male Goldfinch all trying to get at the seeds and swirling around. In the
background on a tree was a female Pileated Woodpecker -what a sight.

I was just about to post details when Jay's message came in. There is  
only a bit that I can add. First, there are now some sticks on the  
ground pointing to the trail where the vireo was last seen. It appears  
to be moving around a bit, so be patient and listen carefully.


In addition to Jay's birds, Dave Nutter and I also had a Gray Catbird  
and a NASHVILLE WARBLER in the same vicinity. The Prairie Warbler  
continued to sing after Jay left.

[cayugabirds-l] Goetchius Egret, Palm, and Yellowlegs

I visited the Goetchius Preserve in Caroline this morning. When I arrived, 
there was a GREAT EGRET perched high in a tree at the back of the open 
water. On my way back through an hour or so later, it was gone. From the 
road, I also spotted a BROWN THRASHER and a YELLOW WARBLER. Walking through 
the preserve (in wellies) I found five LESSER YELLOWLEGS and three KILLDEER 
in the newly restored wetland area. In the wooded area behind, I found a 
PALM WARBLER, two RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, and another YELLOW WARBLER. There 
were SAVANNAH SPARROWS sprinkled across the field and a BROAD-WINGED HAWK 
flew overhead.


New yard birds this morning included a dozen WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, a pair 
of COWBIRDS, a BLUE-HEADED VIREO, a flying BROAD-WINGED HAWK being harassed 
by crows, and a BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER.

Hoping that a few of the VERY early spring arrivals might trickle through my 
yard, I was out during the sunny period early this morning -- it was fairly 
quiet except for the songs of PURPLE FINCH, WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, and 
KINGLETS. As usual, there were a few interesting flyovers -- a pair of EASTERN 
BLUEBIRDS,  4 TREE SWALLOWS, and a CHIMNEY SWIFS - all hard to get as actual 
yard birds. A few YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and at least 5 FLICKERS came over as 
well.

Yesterday evening, a dark MERLIN bombed over the yard, and we flushed a flock 
of 20+ AM PIPITS in the fields on Bluegrass Lane off Hanshaw.

[cayugabirds-l] TV watching

Yesterday afternoon around 5, I was yard-birding, essentially trying to chase 
down the loudly calling PILEATED WOODPECKER, one of several that we have had 
resident for years. He was circling his territory, which is roughly our 2 acres 
plus woods beyond to the east and west. He did a great job of staying 200' 
ahead of me and out of sight. After the second circle, I said the heck with it, 
I'll sit here on my back patio and wait for him. Scanning the sky, thinking 'I 
wonder where the TURKEY VULTUREs are today' and on cue the first flew into 
sight low over the trees.

Short time later, the other 2 of that family group (I'm guessing because there 
are 3 together a lot) flew in and all circled. That led to the thought 'I 
wonder if the other 2 groups are still around' as we have counted as many as 10 
at a time together over our woods. On cue: within about 10 min, 10 TVs circling 
overhead.

Then, as happened a month or so back, all of a sudden I realized one of these 
birds circling was not like the others: it was a return of the OSPREY. While I 
was watching the Osprey, in the same binoc view, a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was 
circling a few hundred feet higher! This was getting interesting. I switched 
view slightly to watch TVs and Osprey circling and registered what appeared to 
be a flock of small birds flying downward really fast as if they had flown 
through the group of vultures, but as I followed them down I realized that one 
of the vultures or maybe the Osprey had taken a gigantic dump from 500' and it 
was spreading out. So glad it was going to land on the neighbors house a few 
hundred feet to the north. Another reason to keep your mouth shut while birding.

Bringing attention back to near ground, I saw that 2 of the TVs had perched on 
the big basswood in our next door neighbors, a new roosting spot this year for 
them (they have used some very tall pines visible to the north for years). So 
for the next 10-15 min, I had a chance to study how TVs come to roost. It's 
pretty impressive. They circled lower and tighter in a leisurely manner. On the 
next to last pass, they swoop by the tree and ID the branch they will hit, the 
make a very tight turn to lose speed for final approach. As they come straight 
in on the glide path, they roll wings vertical (like an airplane lowering 
flaps) and flap 2-3 times. This brings them down from about 15 mph to about 2 
mph in the last 20', then they hit the branch (appropriately springy) and that 
kills the final speed to 0 (though sometimes shaking the nearby roosters). This 
works pretty well for getting out of the air, but it's not always the best 
choice for foot comfort, so they will them sometimes hop to another more comfy 
branch with just a few wing flaps.

This morning, to the sound of the recently arrived HOUSE WREN, I went out and 
the roost was all still in place. One bird had come to a closer bare tree and 
presented a great photo op except an AMERICAN CROW was hassling him. I ran for 
the camera but the bird had been chased off the perfect spot. But at the same 
time, the sun had broken over the horizon, and suddenly 5 of the 10 TVs flared 
out their wings to catch some rays and dry last night's rain. This presented a 
fantastic photo and I took a bunch (hope they come out OK).

Couldn't resist all the singing at the Lab this AM, and on a quick walk from 
730-800, got First of Year (for me) GREY CATBIRD foraging and meowing along the 
pond edge, FOY BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER singing cheerily and sitting high 
up in the sun (took some pics, hope they come out too!), and FOY YELLOW WARBLER 
by Fuller Wetlands.

An Osprey was flying over Beebe Lake this morning and perched on a snag
along the ridge.  I heard two Northern Waterthrushes singing by Bull Pasture
Pond, have never heard them there before and doubt they will stay but it was
neat.

throated Green Warblers.

7:15 am, Tuesday morning. Sitting at the breakfast table listening to House 
Wren, Purple Finches, Titmice and suddenly - the loud, loud song of an 
OVENBIRD! Ran outside, found it foraging under the bushes as it periodically 
sang. Way early! Usually not until around May 5 at our house!
