FW: [cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl
I am the one who said it has been seen for a week. The ONLY time I saw it was yesterday 12/31/11. I said that because I’ve been watching reports posted on this list for “about a week”. So please don’t use my “week” as gospel! Re: [cayugabirds-l] TV near Dryden
Ok. Another TV Lansing. I guess these are not that unusual in January in this area! We rarely get them before the end of February in the southern tier! Even in this mild winter none have turned up down there yet! Good luck to all today. Happy 2012! Dave Nicosia. [cayugabirds-l] bat
Hi Folks, Though it's not a bird, I thought readers would be interested to know we saw a bat (little brown?) flying around hawking insects (if there were any) last evening (Dec 31). It was near the wooded cut and stream on Taylor between Sunrise and Cliff Park on West Hill in the city. We were surprised and concerned at this unlikely sighting and wished the little fellow well. [cayugabirds-l] Savannah Mucklands
Thousands and thousands of gulls. Hundreds of tundra swans. Geese by the boatload. Mostly canadas but still a good amount of snows. The gulls were mostly ring billed but many had all black bills from foraging in the muck. Also many herring, 1 GBB and a few candidates for iceland and 1 for glaucous. Not sure on the 2 former... distant and very windy. A guy driving around on an ATV spooked the birds and the sky was almost filled with birds. Wow. Dave Nicosia. [cayugabirds-l] Outlet Owl Savannah area
Just a couple of points on the Waterloo Premium Outlets; the Snowy Owl was on the NW corner of the cupola by the Under Armour Store, mainly visible from behind the stores (I could see top of head from way across parking lot though). If you use the signs on the back side of the stores for a location, please note that, they are just advertising signs for the thruway traffic and don't correspond to the actual store locations. I got there about 9 AM, and the owl had already been there about an hour. I left about 12:15 - 12:30 and it hadn't moved from that location (not liking the wind maybe?) Around Savannah not much activity except tons of Geese (Snow Canada), Swans (Tundra), assorted ducks (mostly Mallards), and Gulls everywhere. I did have a couple Am. Kestrels (one along 318 east of Premium Outlets and the other on the north end of VanDyne Spoor Rd), nice view of a male N. Harrier (corner of Lay E. Tyre roads), lots of Red-tailed Hawks, and a Pileated Woodpecker on VanDyne Spoor Rd (center of wooded section where it turns to a dirt road). Also lots of Am. Tree Sparrows on Towpath Rd. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] TV with half-white wing reappears
T-H's interesting TURKEY VULTURE with the half-white left wing appeared over our house today (West Meadow Dr, off Triphammer Terrace, so about 2.5 mi N of Pyramid Mall) as part of a kettle of about 14 birds. As usual in our area, they circle low and fast disappearing behind the trees behind our house, making it almost impossible to count. I grabbed a series of the half-white winged individual and posted to Flickr. This is my first post there, so hope this link works for you. If not, let me know and I'll try to fix it.
