Cemetery Ln is about 2/3 mile North of Peruville Rd. Going East on
Cemetery L. about 1/4 mile the flock was on the North side of the road
in the trees.

[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park 20Jan2012 - Great Horned Owl

2012-01-20 Thread Jay McGowan
I saw much the same array of birds at Stewart Park at lunch time today
as I did yesterday, including an adult PEREGRINE FALCON (this time
sitting on the ice watching a Red-tailed Hawk eating something) and a
BONAPARTE'S GULL (flying around over the lake fairly distantly). I
walked into Renwick to try to find where the owls might nest this
year. I didn't find any good candidates for nest holes, but I did find
an adult GREAT HORNED OWL roosting in a large knot in a cottonwood. I
will post a photo later tonight.

I just drove Cemetery Road a couple of times looking for waxwings but
was unable to find any. Maybe tomorrow will be more fruitful.

[cayugabirds-l] great horned owls

2012-01-20 Thread Naomi Brewer
My son went outdoors about 11 pm, last night to check the outdoor furnace.
He heard ,not far from the house, in the woods, to the north/west ---hoot,
hoot. Then right away an answering hoot, hoot from the south. After a
minute another faint hoot, hoot still farther south (woods). 3 Great Horned
Owls. Today there were rafts of Canada Geese all along the lake shore and
doing a great lot of honking. Also all the usual birds at the feeders
suet.

[cayugabirds-l] Gray Catbird at Monkey Run

2012-01-20 Thread Christopher Wood
After arriving home this evening I took a quick walk along the old
railroad tracks that go from Monkey Run road toward Hwy 13. About 1/2
along the trial, I saw a Gray Catbird on the south side of the trail.
This is roughly 400 meters east of Monkey Run Road along the trail. I
didn't have my camera, but was able to get some quick photos with my
iPhone through the scope. While very poor, the bird is easily
identifiable. See eBird checklist below.

http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S9638949

I'm intrigued by the pattern of reports for Gray Catbird in winter
along Fall Creek. The Gray Catbird that Jessie and I saw here in 2010,
we didn't find until 20 February. Ryan Douglas found the Cornell
Campus bird in the winter of 2009 on the 20th of January, and the one
at Comstock Knoll/Winter Garden in 2007 was first found by Brad Walker
on 1 February. I know there are a couple reports of Gray Catbird in
the last 10 years or so on the CBC, which weren't reported to eBird
and I have no idea where they were. I suspect some of these catbirds
may be in the general area and then move toward the somewhat more
stable and food-rich areas along Fall Creek. But I wonder just how far
some of these birds move. I suspect if we covered areas like the
Farmers Market and along other creeks regularly, we may find other
birds that show up as the weather changes. This is certainly a great
winter for half-hardy species, by far the best since I have been in
Ithaca!

Good birding,

[cayugabirds-l] juvenile Bald Eagle at Cass Park inlet

2012-01-20 Thread Regi Teasley
Today a bit before 3:00 in the afternoon we were walking our dogs in
Cass Park near the inlet when we saw an eagle.
It was not an adult bald eagle so I presume it was a juvenile Bald
Eagle. (Sorry, I don't know my juvenile eagles!)

It flew down the inlet toward the lake at a height (just above
treetops) suggesting it was hunting for fish. What a wingspread!

2012-01-20 Thread Robyn Bailey
We heard one Great Horned Owl hooting about 5:45 am this morning from the
woods, audible from right outside of our house. It stopped the instant daylight
crept in. Second observation of GHOs hooting near our home, separated by a few
months- here's hoping they will nest!

[cayugabirds-l] short-eared owls in Ovid

2012-01-20 Thread Marty Schlabach
Mary Jean called me 3 times today, all in the neighborhood of 5pm. First she
and Emma, our 3 year old granddaughter, saw 3 short-eared owls on Wycoff Rd
just west of Rock River Rd. Then minutes later 2 owls on Wycoff Rd just east
of Rock River Rd, followed by 1 near the intersection of Wycoff Rd and Hall Rd.

These are essentially the first sightings of the season in that area where
we've been regularly seeing them in recent years. We and several others have
checked the area numerous times over the last couple of months without any
sightings. Could there be a correlation between the arrival of winter and the
arrival of the short-ears?
