To get there, Google: Sampson State Park. You will drive into the park entrance
(Sampson State Park Rd.) heading due West. You will encounter a large rotary.
Take this around to the "third exit", basically, continue heading due West.
Take this to the end of the roadway to the T-intersection with East Lake Road.
Make a right-hand turn onto East Lake Road. Drive almost one mile North, to the
point where you can see Seneca Lake to the North, beyond a green gate and
residential houses outside of the Park. Pull over and walk around the area to
the South of the green gate; especially the area about 200-300 feet South of
the green gate.

I drove up after work thinking I wouldn't see the bird. After 10 minutes of
phishing 2 Carolina Wrens came out and so did this gray beauty. Rain coming
down heavy and I'm looking at a lifer. The bird was on the lake side before the
gate where the road goes to rocks. Great find Tim!

And then one showed up. Keep up the good summoning wizardry.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE

2012-12-10 Thread Marie P Read
Sounds like typical Townsend's Solitaire winter behavior - I was in eastern CA
a few weeks back photographing them. They set up winter feeding territories,
defending fruiting trees (Western Juniper where I was) from waxwings, robins
etc. As part of that territoriality they sing/call through the winter.

Re:[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga lake basin map

2012-12-10 Thread Karen Edelstein
I'm not sure who authored the Cayuga Basin link on Google Maps, but anyone
who would like a kml or shapefile version of the boundary that I used to
create the maps in the revised Birding the Cayuga Basin guide released last
year...please just ask. That boundary was based on Wiegand and Eames' very
rough sketch, and then translated to a GIS using HUC 12 watersheds as a
basis. Those are drawn from digital elevation models, and while probably
not zoom-able to a parcel level, certainly would have more detail accuracy
than one that was based on a region-wide map. Geo, I'll cc you off-list
with a detail of Tupper Rd.

[cayugabirds-l] eagles

2012-12-10 Thread Susan Fast
After our morning walk yesterday, I mentioned to the wife that the day
looked great for migrating eagles. I predicted that Franklin Mtn. would
have 15 goldens. So after a long coffee break, I set up in the field across
the road from our house. Shortly thereafter, about 1130, a BALD EAGLE
soared over. It had an all-white tail with the head still brown. Then a
group of 4 RED-TAILED HAWKS floated by. I took half an hour off for lunch,
returning to the field at 1300 and immediately a juvenile GOLDEN EAGLE
flapped and sailed by, quite low. I had to quit at 1400 to attend a
birthday party. So I was very surprised this morning to see that Franklin
Mtn. recorded no birds at all yesterday. So much for my Oneonta
predictions.
