[cayugabirds-l] turkeys
On a walk up Bundy Road in Ithaca yesterday I saw a flock of about 40 turkeys in the fields on the south side of Bundy Road west of the intersection of Bundy and Hopkins Road. I haven't seen turkeys since the late fall, though I see them frequently in the summer and fall usually in yards and fields along Bundy. I don't know if that's because they spend the winter in other locations or because I tend to walk earlier in warmer weather. It's good to know they've made it through the winter. [cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagles in Danby
Yesterday morning (around 9:30am) I saw Bald Eagles apparently working on a nest at the SW end of Michigan Hollow Road just south of West Danby. Is that a known nesting site? I also heard my first konkareee of a red-wing blackbird there at the same time. A beautiful way to end February and move into March. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagles in Danby
Hi Kim, Sounds like you're talking about the eagles' nest on a wooded island in the North Spencer Marsh? Yes, this is their fourth year there. -Geo On Mar 1, 2013, at 10:46 AM, Kim Haines-Eitzen kj...@cornell.edu wrote: Yesterday morning (around 9:30am) I saw Bald Eagles apparently working on a nest at the SW end of Michigan Hollow Road just south of West Danby. Is that a known nesting site? RE:[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagles in Danby
Hi Kim: I live near that area. Bald Eagles have successfully nested in that location for at least the past 2 years. There were previous nesting attempts during 2008-2010, but I can't confirm whether they were successful. In past years the pair has left the area during the non-breeding season; however, this year they seem to have remained, as I have seen them numerous times throughout the fall and winter. In late December/early January they were regularly seen feeding on a road-killed deer just north of Spencer. [cayugabirds-l] Additional Slaty-backed Gull photos
Link below to photos taken by Jim Tarolli. Photos 6 7 show the bird with other gulls (it is the bird facing away). This will be a good chance for those looking to use the OneidaRBA text-message system if they find the bird (send the text to 41411 and use the keyword OneidaRBA, which is not case-sensitive, as the first word of the message as in Oneidarba Slaty-backed Gull still at Oswego). Please include your name also. If the bird sticks around it should not be difficult to spot. In real life it doesn't look much like LBBG and only suggests that when standing with GBBG (and then only briefly). When with Herrings the almost-black back color and big size suggest GBBG. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jtarolli9/sets/72157632886582820/ Dave Wheeler N Syracuse, NY -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Myers this afternoon
I decided to make a quick trip to Myers this afternoon while running errands in town. Birds of note were a drake Red-breasted Merganser seen from the point and later from the marina, several American Pipits on the gravel , a smattering of Northern Pintail and American Wigeon from the Marina and a high count for me of 36 Gadwall in the marina.
