Re: [cayugabirds-l] Snowy owl?

2013-03-03 Thread Christopher Wood
This sounds like it may be a Short-eared Owl. Snowy Owls do not have beige or
brown on the wings. The markings are black. This seems to be a great year for
Short-eared Owl and the habitat around King Road looks good for Short-eared.
That would be my best guess.

[cayugabirds-l] Hawks at Game Farm Rd.

2013-03-03 Thread Tobias Dean
Driving by at 4:45 PM there were at least half a dozen hawks that looked
like the same species eying the pheasants. When they soared the underside
of the tails seemed to have a yellowish tinge, but the tails seemed red
above.
I would love a more expert observer to identify them for me.

[cayugabirds-l] Summerhill Sunday

2013-03-03 Thread bob mcguire
I got a really late start today (overslept) and was surprised to run
into Dave Nutter shortly after arriving at Salt/Dresser Roads. We both
noted the 14 Evening Grosbeaks at the feeder at 1158 Salt Rd, then
together walked down to the snowmobile clubhouse and back, and a
stretch of Dresser Road, all without encountering more than 1 -2
chickadees, a possible Golden-crowned Kinglet, and some thrashing wing
noises that may have been a Ruffed Grouse. Oh, and a raven that kept
us company for part of the walk.

From there Dave went north to chase the Trumpeter Swans (they are the
ones with the green neck tags, if anyone has trouble telling them
apart from tundra Swans). And I drove home via Lake Como. One of the
feeders on East Lake Como Rd. was full of chickadees, nuthatches,
cardinals, tree sparrows, a flock of some 40 Common Redpolls - and
three early-season Red-winged Blackbirds.

It was not a bad morning to be out: no wind to speak of, few
snowmobiles, and even a patch of near-blue overhead.

[cayugabirds-l] Ermine

2013-03-03 Thread John A-X. Morris
I spotted 4-5 chickadees out the window, seemingly chittering about
something, and a closer look revealed an ermine below in the snow. Hadn't
heard of chickadees mobbing a weasel before!

[cayugabirds-l] More Lapland Longspurs

2013-03-03 Thread Jay McGowan
After watching at least two LAPLAND LONGSPURS (neither in alternate
plumage, sadly) with Horned Larks and Snow Buntings at the north end of
Lake Ridge Road near the Triangle Diner around midday today, Livia and I
found two more longspurs with ~100 Horned Larks and half a dozen Snow
Buntings in one of the first fields on Lansingville Road just off Rt. 34B.

[cayugabirds-l] Morgan rd SEOWs, n. shrike, and harrier

2013-03-03 Thread Andrew Myers
This afternoon John Confer, Julia Gillis, Michaela TerAvest, and I drove up
to the NYSDEC office on Morgan rd. in the Montezuma complex and had
wonderful views of no fewer than 5 short-eared owls gliding and careening
over the fields. We also saw a harrier and a strike in a shrub in the
field. We had a great time, and I highly recommend making the trip!

Cheers,

Andrew

[cayugabirds-l] OT; A long drawn whistle

2013-03-03 Thread Meena Haribal
Hi all,

Yesterday I heard a repeated call of long drawn whistle and I am stymied by
that. First thought was yes, it is a familar bird. Then it dawned on me that
familiarity is from Indian origin, It sounded like a Common Iora or a Magpie
Robin call, but this was in Caddo National Grassland in TX near Decatur.

Anyone has any suggestions as to what it could be? I did record it among the
calls of other species of birds and wind. I will post the cut when I get chance
to do so in next few days.

http://www.xeno-canto.org/species/Copsychus-saularis Here is a call of magpie
robin, this has shorter intervals, but I think the call I heard was more like
Common Iora with longer drawn and longer intervals too, funny I did not find
any samples of Common Iora on Xeno Canto.

Thanks in advance!

[cayugabirds-l] Sunday morning longspur, shrike, pintails

2013-03-03 Thread Kenneth Victor Rosenberg
Tom Schulenberg and I birded up to Triangle Diner area this morning, and like
others, found a single LAPLAND LONGSPUR with HORNED LARKS on Lake Ridge Road --
a dull streaky bird feeding very close to the barn on the west side of the road
(not with most of the larks and SNOW BUNTINGS further south).

At Myer's Point, the highlights were an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL sleeping
on the north gravel spit (my first one this year), a calling AMERICAN PIPIT,
and a raft of over 180 NORTHERN PINTAIL to the south off the marina.

We stopped by Cayuga Vista Rd. in Lansing and the NORTHERN SHRIKE was
obligingly on the wire (11:30 AM).

Back at home earlier in the morning, a flock of 25 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS flew
over, and a lone male COMMON REDPOLL was looking a bit sick under my feeders.
