[cayugabirds-l] White wing Turkey Vulture
On the way home from birding the Montezuma area yesterday afternoon, we saw a white wing Turkey Vulture over the DEC check station. It drifted low over the station, so we were able to get an excellent look at the white pattern. It eventually moved north and out of sight. [cayugabirds-l] anyone still interested in Bohemian Waxwings? (90 in Sapsucker Woods this morning)
Hi all, I've been away for the last while, and so I'm not sure if people have had their fill chasing BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, but at about 8 AM this morning I saw a flock of 90 perched in the trees a bit to the west of the white barn (Kip's Barn) in Sapsucker Woods. As far as I could tell with my binoculars, there was not a single Cedar Waxwing with the group. The last that I saw, the birds were flying down into some shrubs along or near the power line cut. They were easily audible from the north part of the Wilson Trail: I was hearing them well before I came to a location where I could see them. These birds were something of a curse-breaker for me: the first Bohemian Waxwings that I've seen in New York (after having seen them in a surprising number of other places over the time that I've lived in Ithaca, including in two other countries in the last 3 weeks). As of about 10 minutes ago, these birds flew off over the woods along the powerlines/parallel to route 13. But they seem to like that spot, so it's worth checking every so often. Other birds of note in that spot include singing PURPLE FINCH and FIELD SPARROW, along with several Phoebes. - Brad On Mon, Apr 8, 2013 at 8:42 AM, Wesley M. [cayugabirds-l] Dryden Lake east
I checked out the east side of Dryden Lake park this morning. A Ring-necked Pheasant was calling loudly, and spring peepers AND woodfrogs were chorusing too. A female Hairy Woodpecker was drumming. Tree Swallows have arrived in force, and the local Eastern Bluebirds (who still have no nest) now have lots of competition for the nest boxes. One of the resident Song Sparrows has a slightly odd song, ending with a downturned trill, and I've heard him several times on consecutive days...nice to have an easy way to recognize individual birds. On the way home, along Yellow Barn Rd I heard a Ruby-crowned Kinglet singing. Spring! [cayugabirds-l] Mundy Lunch walk
It was a gorgeous day outside, so decided to take a walk in Mundy. It was very sweet to hear Chickadees doing phoebeee. Then there was real Phoebe doing his non-stop phirbee. From the creek I heard an incessant chatter of a Belted Kingfisher for long time. No mergansers on the creek, but I did see a quiet Brown Creeper creeping up a basswood trunk, that had been utilized by the Sapsuckers in the past. Talking of Sapsuckers, this year I am again looking for sapsuckers trees with sap holes. I am interested in the xylem sap too! Please let me know if you would not mind sharing the secret sites of these creatures! Thanks in advance. [cayugabirds-l] SFO Sunday Montezuma day trip
Despite stiff winds all day, our SFO day trip group to Montezuma NWR, led by Bill Ostrander, saw a total of 58 species on our way around Cayuga Lake (eBird checklists below). We started in Stewart Park where we were treated to numerous waterfowl, starring a NORTHERN PINTAIL, a PIED-BILLED GREBE, and our first BALD EAGLE of the day. We also briefly spotted a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER entering the willows by the lake and a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD by the boathouse. At Myers Point, we encountered KILLDEER, COOTS, REDHEAD, and GADWALL, among others. BUFFLEHEAD were the only waterbirds at Wells College Boathouse, but at Union Springs Pond we were greeted by an OSPREY in addition to the usual suspects. We arrived at Montezuma around 10:30 AM and used the Visitor Center as a windbreak while we viewed AMERICAN WIGEON, many GREEN- and three BLUE-WINGED TEAL, a female NORTHERN HARRIER, and my first NORTHERN FLICKER of the year. The Wildlife Drive gave us great looks at CANVASBACK and NORTHERN SHOVELER in good numbers, a male HARRIER, and four wee DUNLIN. Incidental sightings by other group members included a HORNED LARK, but Bill and I missed it because we were too busy watching the male Harrier. Additional species seen at Tschache Pool were TRUMPETER SWANS, a RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and an AMERICAN TREE SPARROW. Knox-Marsellus Marsh was very windy but we saw a small group of SNOW GEESE (including one blue goose), WILD TURKEYS, and a single GREATER YELLOWLEGS. More Greater yellowlegs were seen at Carncross Road, where we struggled to remain upright in the wind but were rewarded with a KESTREL, who was also struggling against the wind. A final stop in Sheldrake on the return to Ithaca included just a handful of BUFFLEHEAD and one last GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Bohemians in close at SSW
Update (5:30): The Bohemian Waxwings are gone for now. A large flock (100+) of Bohemian Waxwings came over fairly high from the north (airport area), and then all the close-in birds started calling loudly and they all took off and joined the large flock heading south. All except for 1 bird that is, who stayed on the top of a tree above the Wilson Trail calling and calling -- eventually after 10 minutes or so, it flew off to the south as well. This is an insane number of Bohemian Waxwings for our area, so hopefully they will stick around for everyone to see. [cayugabirds-l] missed the Bohemians, but saw something else
at the Bird Lab. standing on the bridge opposite the main entrance I saw a larger bird on the far side of the pond, roosting fairly high. My poor old binochs just weren't up to a very good look at it. I thought it might be another Great Blue H. but it did seem a bit smaller, with the nesting pair to compare with. I know the Bird club is meeting( cant make it alas) so thought someone could identify it for me. ThanksToby I did see my FOY tree swallow, and a redtail(?_ hawk on the power pole near the far parking lot. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
