Re: [cayugabirds-l] Broad-winged Hawks, etc.
Hi all, Jay McGowan and I (later joined by Kevin McGowan) did an hour long hawkwatch, that Ken referred to, at Sapsucker Woods yesterday. We had a few BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, several SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, AMERICAN KESTRELS, NORTHERN HARRIER, BALD EAGLE, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, and COMMON LOON and other migrants. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Broad-winged Hawks, etc.
As I walked home from work along Spencer Road around 5:30pm I heard a doubled, high, thin squeal. In either a reflection on my hearing or on my unfamiliarity with calls which I don't hear often, I wondered whether it was a Broad-winged Hawk or a partially-heard Rusty Blackbird. The sky view there was blocked by trees, and these woods were not swampy, but a steep hillside with a stream tumbling down in its own miniature gorge. I didn't find the source of the squeals then, but the next time I heard it my sky was more open, and I saw a Buteo circling over the Titus Flats neighborhood. Binoculars revealed the whitish underside of its body and wings with a narrow dark border, and a gray head/neck/throat. Its tail was too large, proportionately, for a Red-tail, and dark below, broken by two broad crisp white stripes. This was plenty to ID the BROAD-WINGED HAWK, but the finishing touch for me was when it set its wings for a long deliberate glide into the woods of South Hill, so the rear edge of its wings formed a straight line while the forward edge of each wing made a curve: a nice big capital B.--Dave NutterOn Apr 16, 2013, at 06:28 AM, Brad Walker edgarallenhoo...@gmail.com wrote:Hi all,Jay McGowan and I (later joined by Kevin McGowan) did an hour long hawkwatch, that Ken referred to, at Sapsucker Woods yesterday. [cayugabirds-l] Migrants at Monkey Run
After seeing the big push of migrants last night that lit up the Binghamton radar, Jessie and I took a walk around Monkey Run. Nothing particularly unusual, but several new local arrivals including Spotted Sandpiper, Bank Swallow and Pine Warbler. Also good numbers of both kinglets, a singing Winter Wren and a nice mix of other birds. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Lab of O Snipe Display
Hi Donna, First is the where employees park (where handicapped parking is), the second is the employee lot near the exit from the parking areas and the third lot is the one near Route 13. I hope that clears it up! We're so used to having all the employees just know, I didn't think it would be confusing. - Brad On Tue, Apr 16, 2013 at 2:10 PM, Donna Scott d...@cornell.edu wrote: Brad, Could you be a bit more precise in what you mean by the First, second and third parking lots at CLO, please? [cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park 11 AM
Kind of late I guess but I finally got my visual memory set for Common Merganser, there were at least 3. Lots of canvas backs, kingfisher, possible yellow rumped warbler but I am still learning those. I didnt see, or recognize any terns. also, one woodchuck that seems to live under the stones on the little promontory of the pond where I used to feed wonderbread to a zillion ducks when I was a kid. ( which eventually poisoned the water) there were barn swallows and I think tree swallows there also. At home in North Danby I saw my FOY Phoebe and Tree swallows. Last year the barn swallows arrived here last weekend, but there isnt much to eat now. Does anyone know anything about the martin house rotting away on a pole by the old duck pond? (Is that Hogs Hole?) I would consider rebuilding it if there was any chance Martins would occupy it. I have no interest in providing dwellings for starlings and house sparrows.
