RE:[cayugabirds-l] Thrush flight

2014-05-27 Thread Meena Madhav Haribal
I listened to about 30 minutes till the rain became too loud. Swainson's
Thrushes were going continuously, some were very low. Several Grey Cheeked
thrushes, I think there were probably some Indigo Buntings or sparrows of some
sort, which seem to be coming in constantly too but not as frequent as
Swainson's . Then I also heard a Yellow-billed Cuckoo and a Black-billed
cuckoo. Coyotes howling in a distant. Then there were some birds, which sounded
familiar but I cant place them. When rain approached the birds seemed to have
come lower down.
Right when I started listening there was a train which was passing Ithaca
downtown so kept honking every few seconds for at least 10 minutes and there
were so many cars passing by even at this time of the day. But in spite of all
that I enjoyed listening to the birds overhead. I did get some recordings of
some very low flying birds.

It is such a fun while waiting copying 83.4 G of photos to passport drive!

Cheers
Meena

There is an insane number of thrushes passing over Northeast Ithaca right now-
my biggest spring flight I think. Over 80 Swainsons and 30 Gray-cheeked in the
first 20 minutes if listening.

Lot's of Spotted Sandpiper calls in Etna, as well. Though, the proximity of my
microphone to Fall Creek makes for discerning possible local birds from
migrants rather difficult.

Sincerely,
Chris

2 Black-billed Cuckoos
2 Indigo Buntings
1 Alder Flycatcher
15+ Gray-cheeked Thrushes (estimated)
65-75+ Swainson's Thrushes (estimated)

Also, I stopped in at the Hawthorn Orchard this morning for about 45 minutes.
Extremely quiet. Though, I was surprised to hear two distinctly different Wood
Thrushes singing: one down in the North ravine, where I've been periodically
hearing one; a second one was singing up in the Hawthorn Orchard in the
Northeast corner. Both were counter-singing. Of note, House Wrens seem
distinctly absent compared to pass years at the Hawthorn Orchard.

Good birding!

[cayugabirds-l] First blue Damselfly & other firsts

2014-05-27 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
A blue Damselfly was hovering (?) next to my back door Sun. evening, my
1st of the spring.=-O >:o

Becky was working in the garden when she saw a Balto. Oriole fly into
the ash tree at the end of the garden. Sharp eyes !!! found
the new nest amidst a thick clump of leaves. I fear the gray rats will
be able to get to it. We've had orioles for many yrs. here but have
never seen a nest.

The 1st box of tree swallows hatched right on schedule yesterday.:-)
Three to go.

Bluebirds pulled a fast one on the house sparrows. They found the hole
in the dead limb of an ash tree that the downy woodpeckers had used last
yr. and aren't being harassed for once.

The secretive catbird flies from one hedgerow to another, yr. after yr.,
but I never find its nest. Same with the mockingbirds. Chipping sparrows
are somewhere in the big spruce near my BR. They and a chickadee come to
glean insects from the crab apple outside my BR window.

Becky heard ospreys calling on Sun. as she worked in our garden. Sharp
eyes as well a good hearing! They were very high in the sky, flying
westward towards the lake. One left the others and came back our way.

John spotted a green heron on the "mat" on Mill pond last wk. as we came
from Auburn. We also continue to see the lone male redhead & 2 male
mallards on Mill pond.

Gas was $3.64.9 here in Union Springs on 23 May 2014.

Have a great, short work wk.!

Fritzie
