Re: [cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl at Hancock Airport

2015-01-01 Thread Mickey Scilingo
I saw 2 SNOWY OWLS at the Syracuse Airport this morning around 9:30. The first
was a lightly barred individual perched on a light post alongside the East-West
runway straight out from the public observation area. The second was a more
heavily barred bird sitting on a long snow bank on the north side of the fence
near the overflow parking area. I also saw a PEREGRINE FALCON flying over the
parking garage.

[cayugabirds-l] Large Aythya raft north end of Cayuga Lake where railroad tracks cross.

2015-01-01 Thread David Nicosia
The birds are lined up along the northern shore and there probably are
about 1000 conservatively. From lower lake road too distant to id scaup or
even ring necked ducks but there are at least scaup and lots of redheads.
These birds are hopefully avoiding the hunters. I saw lots of aythya flying
up the lake earlier as the barrage of gun fire scaring them.

[cayugabirds-l] Cooper's Hawk at feeders for CBC

2015-01-01 Thread Nari Mistry
As we were rounding off our CBCount at our feeders after counting at E
Hill Rec Way and Dodge Rd., an adult Cooper's Hawk swooped up to a perch
in the box-elder, directly above our line of feeders and fiercely eyed
the feeders below, sweeping her head rapidly back and forth many times.
We were quite awed by the fierce red eyes so close above us --
fortunately all the birds had fled a few moments earlier.

The bird count today was quite sparse in the 20F weather. None of the
usual Carolina wrens, Red-br nuthatches, A. Tree Sparrows. At our
feeders yesterday we did have 3 Am Tree Sparrows and a pair of Red-br
Nuthatches.

[cayugabirds-l] Orange-crowned Warbler today

2015-01-01 Thread Paul Anderson
I'm not sure what the etiquette of posting on bird-count day is, but
rather than wait until the evening compilation to announce this, I
thought it would be best to get the word out while there is still enough
light for others to try and see this bird.

I saw a single ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER about 100-200 yards south of the
dam/fish ladder at the south end of the inlet. It was on the west side
of the railroad tracks feeding on berries when I first found it. Look
for a scrubby tree with very dark colored berries.

Never having seen one of this species before, I was a bit unsure of what
it was. However having reviewed my copy of Stephenson and Whittle's The
Warbler Guide carefully, I am now quite convinced that this is what it was.

Good luck to others who attempt to find it.

If you wish to get there, probably the easiest way is to find the road
that goes between the tracks and Nate's Floral Estates, and drive as far
south as you can. Park there and the spot is a short walk further south.

My other sightings are below.

Canada Goose 518
Mallard 160
Green-winged Teal 1
Common Merganser 10
Red-tailed Hawk 3

Eastern Bluebird 9
Northern Mockingbird 2
European Starling 823
Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Seen about 100-200 yards south of the dam. First
spotted feeding on berries. Stayed in plain sight for two minutes before
leaving. It then returned for another minute or so. Bird was mostly yellowish,
with a slightly paler throat and drab grey upperparts. UnTC were yellowish in
contrast to pale grey tail.

[cayugabirds-l] Blue-headed Vireo Today!

2015-01-01 Thread bob mcguire
A Blue-headed Vireo came in with a flock of chickadees/etc during the morning
count today. In the cedars/arbovitaes at 1950 Hanshaw Road. I was able to get a
prolonged, clear, eye-level look at it for about 30 seconds. I walked back down
the road to summon Susan for a look. When we returned 20 minutes later we were
unable to call it back in. C'est la vireo! I hope someone is able to re-find it
tomorrow.

[cayugabirds-l] Around Cayuga Lake and a few spots at the Montezuma Wetlands Complex New Year's Day 2015

2015-01-01 Thread David Nicosia
Started out at Myer's Point Marina and Ladoga and met Kevin McGowan and
friend doing CBC. Waterfowl was scarce relatively speaking and you could
hear gunshots down by Portland Point. The normal flock of AMERICAN COOTS
was by Ladoga, there was a flock of REDHEADs flying around and landing at
times. There were also some MALLARDS. Not much else. I think Kevin had
more. Anyway, I headed to Myer's Point from there and didn't get too much
more but between Ladoga and Myer's I got all three common gull species in
winter. I also added 2 COMMON MERGANSERS. There was a hunter at Salt Point
too and a larger flock of Aythya flew north past Myer's out of sight. Most
were REDHEAD and SCAUP sp (I think).

Next stop was actually Lake Road in Ledyard (not Ridge Road as in my
earlier email) where I saw a lot of birds in the bushes. I stopped and did
some phishing and got on a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW among other common birds.

Next stop was Long Point and it was windy, even windier than Myer's which
was pretty bad. Only new birds for the day were 5 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS.
I also picked up a NORTHERN PINTAIL with some MALLARDS just past the houses
on Lake Road.

At Aurora Bay, I followed some hunters and surprisingly there still were
some birds around which were mainly canada geese. I counted 26 RED-BREASTED
MERGANSERS, 4 HORNED GREBES fairly distant and many MALLARDS, CANADA GEESE
and one lone immature SNOW GOOSE. There was also 1 COMMON GOLDENEYE AND
BUFFLEHEAD along with a GREATER SCAUP.

At the Factory Street Pond I had 5 GADWALL and 1 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER
right in the tree and bush close to where you pull off . The bird was
calling with its characteristic flat chip call note. I also got a great
look at this warbler which is neat since it is 1 January!!

The nest concentration of waterfowl that were close and shielded from the
wind was the North Mill Pond. I had about 75 GADWALL, 15 AMERICAN WIGEON,
MALLARDS, another NORTHERN PINTAIL, 2 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 11 REDHEAD and 5
BUFFLEHEAD.

Frontenac Park had some gulls and to my surprise one BONAPARTE'S GULL.
There was also a GREAT BLUE HERON on the way up toward Cayuga and 2 HOODED
MERGANSERS at Mud Lock. I also picked up my first AMERICAN ROBIN of the day
here too.

I had a great view of an AMERICAN KESTREL on a wire on Route 89 well before
you get to "Goose Haven" before you reach Montezuma.

East Road was windy and full of AMERICAN CROWS!! I couldn't find any
cranes. I did also have 3 BALD EAGLES up there.

Van Dyne Spoor Road was quiet but I did get some great looks at EASTERN
BLUE BIRDS. I also am pretty sure I had a northern shrike dive down over
the levee but it was too much of a fleeting look for me to be sure.
Carncross road was dead and the lighting was poor and the wind really
blowing.

On the way back, near May's Point. I had about 30 COMMON MERGANSERS in the
open flowing water by the bridge.

I stopped at Lower Lake Road and really didn't get much close. Like I said
earlier there were loads of mainly Aythya at the north edge of the lake
near the railroad crossing and I believe hunters can't go there. Smart
birds. I positively identified REDHEADS and some scaup sp. I could not tell
if there were ring-necked ducks or canvasback as the shimmer was pretty bad
and the birds were just so far away.

I totaled only 48 species but it was a fun day to be out.

Some select photos can be found here...

Happy New Year to all!!!
