[cayugabirds-l] The Early Bird...White-breasted Nuthatch

2016-01-02 Thread Marie P. Read
Hi all,

On the second day of the new year, with only the barest hint of increasing day
length, there is a White-breasted Nuthatch singing in my backyard. A case of
"the early bird catches the mate"?

[cayugabirds-l] Ithaca count notes & questions

2016-01-02 Thread Dave Nutter
Note that Tom Schulenberg heard a Fish Crow at his house on Hanshaw Rd, but I
don't know if that should affect the total.

I neglected to mention that 1,185 Dark-eyed Juncos was a new high count.

About the species discovered by single parties, I'd like to make sure I get the
names of all initial observers and an accurate description of the location,
including the town where the birds were first found. I know I lack that some of
this information. In particular:

Kevin, where did you first find the Long-tailed Ducks?

Who first found the Red-breasted Merganser and where? I first learned of it
from Jay who was with Livia, but that was around 2pm, and Kevin may have found
it earlier.

Kevin, where did you find the Red-throated Loon?

Scott Sutcliffe, where did you find the Pied-billed Grebe, and who else was
with you?

Colleen, was the Short-eared Owl on the west side of Scofield Rd (Lansing) or
the east side (Groton) or both?

Scott Haber, where was your Merlin observation?

Please let me know if any other info in the list below seems wrong or lacking.

Wow, what a bunch of OCD questions! Thanks for putting up with my efforts to
get consistent data.

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Ithaca count notes & questions

2016-01-02 Thread Jody W Enck
Hi All, just a follow-up to Dave's posts about the Christmas Bird Count. I had
the pleasure of having Nick Reynolds from the Ithaca Journal join me for over
an hour of counting yesterday morning. He posted the following article on the
Journal's webpage. A little too much focus on me for my taste, but I am glad
to see the Club and the count getting some nice press.

Enjoy

[cayugabirds-l] Eared Grebe @ Wells College boathouse

2016-01-02 Thread Dave Nutter
Jay McGowan just reported the return of a/the EARED GREBE to Aurora Bay on
Cayuga Lake, looking north from the Wells College boathouse. Why couldn’t that
bird have shown up last week when Ann & I were still searching for it for our
2015 lists?

[cayugabirds-l] Northern Shrike, Lapland Longspur, GWF Goose

2016-01-02 Thread Jay McGowan
A couple of highlights near Montezuma so far today:

NORTHERN SHRIKE now in a tree near the end of Carncross Road.

Three GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE with a flock of Canada and Snow geese
along Rt. 89 just north of 5&20. The whole flock took off a few minutes
after we found them and broke up in all directions, so not sure where they
ended up.

A continuing MARSH WREN near the observation tower on the main pool, along
with the same diversity of waterfowl in the reduced open water.

And at least two LAPLAND LONGSPURS found by Joe Wing with Horned Larks just
south of the potatoes building in the Mucklands.

[cayugabirds-l] Peregrine at compost

2016-01-02 Thread Stuart Krasnoff
Until the very moment I commenced to thumb this message there was a peregrine
falcon at the compost piles Perching on a short horizontal branch of the only
sizable tree south of the piles. If it returns it should be visible from
Stevenson Road.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Geese

2016-01-02 Thread Marie P. Read
It's not often I see Snow Geese up here on the mountain, but twice today there
have been big flocks loafing in the fields. This morning's was a mixed
Canada/Snow Goose flock, this afternoon's a pure Snow Goose flock (several dark
morphs). Horned Larks there too, along with lots Mourning Doves, and DE Juncos
on the road.
Snows were also seen up here yesterday on the CBC by Victoria Campbell and pals.

Lovely!

[cayugabirds-l] Ithaca Count Week AMERICAN WIGEON & other notes

2016-01-02 Thread Dave Nutter
This morning (2 Jan) with Diane Morton, Ken Kemphues, and Ann Mitchell, I found
a rather dull breeding plumage male AMERICAN WIGEON hugging the muddy shoreline
of Stewart Park a short distance west of the dock. This adds another species
for Count Week.

Stefhan Ohlström said the WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW returned to his feeder today.
It was already a Count Week bird, but now it may also be a first 2015 record
for the Cayuga Lake Basin. It may be a couple days before I get caught up on
that list to make sure.

Jay McGowan says he observed 10 FISH CROWS along Hanshaw Rd at 3:30pm yesterday
(count day). I don’t know whether Tom Schulenberg’s observation is included in
that number. I also don’t know whether these are among the same birds Kevin
counted at the Cornell compost piles. I hope the compiler consults these
observers, who are well-versed in the ways of local Corvids, to sort this out.
