[cayugabirds-l] Seneca Lake St Park correction/addition
Forgot to mention (after reviewing my pics) the N. Pintails and Ruddy Ducks also at Seneca Lake State Park. After a closer look, I'm leaning towards Lesser Scaup female due to a more pointed head. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Seneca Lake Park
A short drive around Seneca Lake State Park in Geneva this morning turned up the usual; Black Ducks, Mallards, lots of Canada Geese, a female Scaup (not sure if lesser or greater), one Common Loon, Horned Grebes, pair of Mute Swans, pair of female Hooded Mergansers, the resident Bald Eagle (by the marina channel), & a single Long-tailed Duck in with all the Buffleheads. Also a few GBB & Herring Gulls in with the Ring-billed. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] MWR update/correction
The Ring-billed duck I mentioned at Mud Lock was more likely a Greater Scaup (only took a quick glance at it). Besides a few Mallards, it was the only duck in the area. I'm assuming it is the same one that had an injured wing and has been there all summer (fortunately not becoming an eagle snack). Also had a catbird and GC Kinglet on towpath yesterday (and possible Lincoln's sparrow in with all the song sparrows) - it was dark and rainy so viewing wasn't great. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma & Seneca Lake Park
The wildlife drive at Montezuma was a little sparse, few ducks & Canada Geese (A. Wigeon, Gadwall, Shovelers, Black Ducks, Mallards, GW Teal, N. Pintail, & Coots). Also had Pectoral (& Semipalmated?) Sandpipers at Benning Marsh and a Peregrine Falcon near the spillway. Knox-Marsellus/Puddlers had lots of ducks & geese (Canada & Snow) didn't see the Ross's or the 15 Sandhill Cranes that were there Thu PM. (Also about a dozen Swans, 3 Trumpeters, & rest too far to be sure, may have been Tundra). Drove around Seneca Lake State Park and Chamber of Commerce in Geneva this afternoon, Bufflehead, C. Mergansers, Mallards, Blacks, Ruddy, A. Goldeneye, pair of Mute Swans, C. Geese, and 7 Horned Grebes. The highlight of the day was seeing Eagles everywhere I went, including downtown Geneva - about 15 total, mostly mature. FYI the resident Ring-neck Duck is still at Mud Lock (along with 1 eagle). -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] GWF Geese at Montezuma
Found a pair of Greater White-fronted Geese at shorebird flats along the drive at Montezuma Wed afternoon, along with groups of Canada Geese, a couple Dunlin, 1 GBB & 1 Herring Gull. I think Baird's Sandpiper is still at the visitor center pool (poor light - wasn't sure). Assorted ducks, few Coots, & a pair of (adult) Bald Eagles (Eagles were across the canal along the drive). -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma & Cleveland OH
It's a little out of the local area but thought it of interest, a Black-billed Magpie has supposedly been seen in on the west side of Cleveland OH. (per whatbird.com post). Locally, both Franklin Gull & Avocet are still at Know-Marsellus & Puddler's marsh, along with a nice male N. Harrier, all seen around 6 PM Monday. [cayugabirds-l] Yellow-bellied Flycatcher & N. Waterthrush at MWR
A short walk around South Spring Pool at Montezuma (off the route 89 parking area) around 1 PM Friday produced very few birds but did see a Northern Waterthrush and a Yellow-bellied Flycatcher on the north side of the path, about 100 yards or so past the overlook platform. Also had a bunch of Downy Woodpeckers, Green Heron, & a Greater Yellowlegs. On the auto route, LaRue's Lagoon had a Am. Golden Plover, Pectoral Sandpipers, Caspian Terns, Yellowlegs, RB Gulls, & assorted ducks. A Peregrine Falcon seemed to be following me, posed for close photos at the "carp" spillway, then followed me around the bend to perch just before Benning Marsh for even closer pics. [cayugabirds-l] "Fairgrounds"
I don't mean to harp on the point, just want to avoid confusion. The Lott farm is the location of Empire Farm Days (which ended Thursday) on the corner of route 414 and Martin Rd, south of the (former) village of Seneca Falls. The SMS "Fair ground" site is about a mile north on route 414, just inside the village of Seneca Falls, near South St. The actual Seneca County Fairgrounds are in the village of Waterloo, between North Rd, Swift St, Wright Ave, & Inslee St. Many people refer to the Lott Farm (aka Farm Days) as the fairgrounds, but to us "locals" that would mean the County Fairgrounds in Waterloo. I've looked there and only come up with Starlings & House Sparrows, unless you count the chickens in the 4H barn. [cayugabirds-l] Seneca Meadows
A couple hours at the Seneca Meadows Wetland Complex this morning (Black Brook Rd Seneca Falls) failed to find the Dickcissel but did see lots of Bobolinks in transition to nonbreeding plumage, several Marsh Wrens, couple Red-bellied Woodpeckers, an Indigo Bunting (also in transition), and a Sora. On the mammal list, a couple nice bucks in velvet, a skunk, and a mink. [cayugabirds-l] Seneca Meadows birds
Went on a 5 mile hike around the Seneca Meadows Wetland Complex (Seneca Falls) today. Lots of Song & Savannah sparrows all over, a few Bobolinks around the "prairie" sections. [cayugabirds-l] Lake Ontario & Savannah area
Went up to Braddock Bay, weather not cooperating, Owl Prowl Woods only offered a quick glimpse of a Great Horned Owl (and a few BC Chickadees & BG Gnatcatchers). Stopped in the warbler banding station to see mostly RC Kinglets and 1 N. Waterthrush & 1 Brown Creeper getting banded. No raptors visible (very low cloud cover & high winds out of the north). Went on to Sodus Point to see lots of breeding plumage Long-tails, lots of Caspian Terns, & tons of DC Cormorants, beyond the pier, to the east. (FYI lots = about 50 - 75, tons = 100-200) Drove on down to Van Dyne Spoor Rd in Savannah to see a pair of green-tagged Trumpeter Swans (pool across Savannah Springs Lake Rd near north end of Van Dyne Spoor Rd), too far to get tag numbers. Marsh area on south end of VDS Rd had several coots and several common gallinules (one with a frog). The wooded area along VDS Rd had a pair of N Flickers, YB Sapsucker, Pileated, & several Rusty Blackbirds. Towpath Rd (Montezuma) offered tree swallows, barn swallows, & a pair of N rough-winged swallows all skimming over the water. Lots of ducks; wood, mallard, gw teal, bw teal, N pintail, shovelers. One adult bald eagle & RT hawk. It's definitely not Cayuga basin but I ran into enough locals while there to post this note. I don't have posting access to any of the FL birdingonthe.net sites so was hoping someone might be able to repost for me. I don't think they are common that far north (Titusville area). Quick notes on Seneca Lake St Park for Sat AM. Bald Eagle (mature) is still hanging out across the canal from the marina, Am Wigeon, C. Goldeneye, C. Mergansers, Bufflehead, Mallards, Black Ducks all present. Couple swans too far out for an ID. No sign of the Egyptian Goose. Sodus Pt pier (1 PM), lots and lots of Long-tailed Ducks but not much else. A few WW Scoters out past the end of the pier and a few RB Mergansers about. Only a few RB Gulls flying around. [cayugabirds-l] Crows
I didn't mean to start any battles, I was just relaying the info from the NYS Hunting Regulations (www.dec.ny.gov). Although I have hunted in the past (not for a few years), I have never shot a crow and was taught that you always eat what you kill. I grew up in a single income family of 8 and we often ate rabbit, squirrel, & venison that we hunted. I realize that there are many non-sportsman (slob) hunters out there, but fishing & hunting is a very regulated industry and is valuable in maintaining healthy population levels, not to mention bringing in major funding for wildlife and conservation (a non-resident fishing, hunting, & trapping license, with all permits was $665.00 last year). FYI - the only deer I ever killed was with a 1970 Chevy Nova, another reason I prefer hunting seasons. As to the crows in Geneva, I enjoy driving along the lakeshore on 5&20 around sunrise/sunset and seeing the trees solid black with about 10,000 crows, but then again, I don't live there. I would suggest that everyone should at least browse through the state fishing & hunting regulations (available at Wal-Mart for free or on-line), if only to understand what the regulations are and why. It will also give you a better understanding of what changes are needed (such as wider use of non-lead shot). -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Crow hunting regulations
In NYS the crow season is Sep 1, 2011 to Mar 31, 2012 (all of upstate and Long Island, excluding NYC) but only on Fri, Sat, Sun, & Mondays. There is no daily limit or possession limit. They are also exempt for HIP registration and may be hunted with rifles and use of electronic calls. (from the NY hunting & trapping 2011-2012 regulations). These are about the most lenient rules of any game species, but if you happen to be from Geneva or Auburn it's kind of hard to find anyone "pro crow" due to the devastation they cause. The rules are designed to help maintain population levels at healthy limits. Just FYI, I had a flock (murder) of about 1000 crows flying over me in the town of Waterloo about 7 AM this morning (96A/East Lake Rd). -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] swan correction, Esker Brook Trail, Sodus Point
I meant Tundra Swans (most likely) at Cayuga State Park Friday, but it was too far for positive ID's. Dozens were flying by the park and congregating about 1/4 mile south of the park. Saturday morning Esker Brook Trail at Montezuma offered several E. Bluebirds, but didn't see any GC Kinglets (had about 6 last week). Also had a N. Mockingbird and a N. Shrike squabbling over territory near the South Spring below the Ridge Trail. Sat. afternoon at Sodus Point pier had lots of Long-tailed Ducks & WW Scoters, a few Horned Grebes, and a couple (Red-throated?) Loons. Only a few RB Mergansers. Also a couple Am Goldeneye & Greater Scaup. Great picture opportunities, will need to review my pics to see if I missed anything unusual. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] Seneca & Cayuga State Parks
Spent an hour or 2 driving around north ends of Seneca & Cayuga lakes. Seneca Lake State Park had it's normal mallards & black ducks, along with a female long-tailed duck, several bufflehead, and 1 pair of common mergansers "getting busy" until a GBB gull dived at them. Gulls were mainly ring-billed, with 1 herring, and about 10 greater black-backed. The Egyptian Goose was on the left side of the main drive near the boat launch, just past the office area. (I'll count it as long as it's not in a cage or pen, and is listed in Sibley's). Cayuga Lake St Park had a lot of swans (trumpeters?), mallards, black ducks, common mergansers, 1 great blue heron, and 1 canvasback (male). Canada Geese were at both parks and several fields across the county. A run around the Chiropractic College didn't turn up any snowy owl. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] question on Snowy's locale
Just wondering if you had a better location for possible Snowy Owl location by Chiropractic College (Seneca Falls). The campus doesn't actually lie along routes 5&20. Maybe they meant route 89 and E. [cayugabirds-l] Long-tailed & GBB Gulls at Geneva, Sodus Point birds
Stopped by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce (north end Seneca Lake) at 2 PM Sunday. Counted about 50 Greater Black-backed Gulls along with about 100 Ring-billed Gulls. Also had Mallards, Black Ducks, Am. Goldeneye, Lesser Scaup, and a hen Long-tailed Duck. Was up to Sodus Point about 9 AM for a brief look, lots of Red-breasted Mergansers, lots of gulls (Ring-billed, Herring, GBB, Bonaparte's), a few Am. Goldeneye, a group of 6 White-winged Scoters, and Long-tailed ducks in the channel. [cayugabirds-l] Petroglyphs & Florida tame birds
A little off topic for birding but I have several photos of petroglyphs taken along the Boise River, Idaho (includes a large crane-like bird). If anyone is interested in seeing them, contact me by email. There are also some good sites in central Wyoming if you're passing through. As for the "tame" birds in Florida, I lived there in the mid 80's and with so many people there, the birds have little choice but to accept (or ignore) our presence. Unless you look like an alligator, they don't see you as a threat and they have learned that people will often feed them, a practice that's discouraged but is hard to prevent. I use to fish some on the inland areas, with birds like herons, egrets, storks, ibises all walking right pass you. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Outlet Owl & Savannah area
Just a couple of points on the Waterloo Premium Outlets; the Snowy Owl was on the NW corner of the cupola by the Under Armour Store, mainly visible from behind the stores (I could see top of head from way across parking lot though). If you use the signs on the back side of the stores for a location, please note that, they are just advertising signs for the thruway traffic and don't correspond to the actual store locations. I got there about 9 AM, and the owl had already been there about an hour. I left about 12:15 - 12:30 and it hadn't moved from that location (not liking the wind maybe?) Around Savannah not much activity except tons of Geese (Snow & Canada), Swans (Tundra), assorted ducks (mostly Mallards), and Gulls everywhere. I did have a couple Am. Kestrels (one along 318 east of Premium Outlets and the other on the north end of VanDyne Spoor Rd), nice view of a male N. Harrier (corner of Lay & E. Tyre roads), lots of Red-tailed Hawks, and a Pileated Woodpecker on VanDyne Spoor Rd (center of wooded section where it turns to a dirt road). Also lots of Am. Tree Sparrows on Towpath Rd. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Tundra Swan clarification & Turkeys
I abbreviated Tundra Swans in my earlier post (T. Swans) by mistake, sorry for the confusion. They are still being seen all around Montezuma (main pool, East Rd, etc). [cayugabirds-l] No Snowy, Montezuma
Spent early morning at Montezuma (auto route), lots of C. Geese, T. Swans, Am Tree Sparrows, and a pair of Red-winged Blackbirds. Also had a few N. Harriers, mature Bald Eagle, Ring-necked and Scaup (Lesser?) in/along the Seneca River. Lots of Mallards & Gadwall flying around. More T. Swans & N. Harriers at Knox-Marsellus. Spent a couple hours at Premium Outlets (shopping & searching for Snowy) without seeing any sign of him/her. I was also concerned about the Thruway traffic. One note however, I think Friday is a big delivery day out there (a lot of trucks were on the back access road) so that may be why Snowy wasn't around. [cayugabirds-l] Snowy-life bird!
I finally got to see a Snowy Owl after trying for a couple years! The owl was across the Thruway from the Waterloo Outlet Center about 2 PM, then flew to the corner tower by Timberland. From there it landed atop a telephone pole behind the northwest corner of the outlet center. I spotted it again on a tower near the food court area, but it was gone about 3 PM and I didn't relocate it (wasn't trying too hard by then though). As to Dave Nutter's question about diet, just a guess, but the food court attracts a lot of rodents out there, and the retention pond has several muskrat houses in it. At each location the owl seemed to be scanning intently all around, but also seemed oblivious to all the people and traffic in the area. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Railroad/VanDyne Spoor roads - no shrike, no owls
Spent the morning around Knox-Marsellus, East Rd, VanDyne Spoor/Wright/Railroad roads and didn't see the shrike or any owls. I did have about a million snow geese (at least a couple thousand) take off from knox-marsellus and 14 sandhill cranes on the frozen puddlers marsh. Had a dozen or more common mergansers in the canal by the route 89 bridge, and a golden-crowned kinglet on the north bank, west of the lock. A pair of hairy woodpeckers, a pair of pileated, and a flicker were all together in the woods between VanDyne Spoor and Wright roads. Railroad road is in very bad condition (potholes) and only offered a few bluebirds and one Am. kestrel. Still a few tundra swans around with a lot of canada geese and assorted ducks (mostly mallards identified). Only saw a couple eagles (MWR auto route and towpath rd). -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Swans, ATSparrows, Horned Larks
Around Montezuma this morning at sunrise, some C. Geese, 1 mature Bald Eagle, 1 male Hooded Merganser, couple N. Harriers & Red-tailed hawks. Over to East Rd/Potato shed lots of geese (Snow & Canada) but no Snowy Owl. Gulls all over this morning with some ducks (mostly Mallards). A pair of Horned Larks and several Tree Sparrows between Van Dyne Spoor and Wright Rds. Up to Sodus Point in the almost blizzard conditions, lots of Long-tails just in the bay, several Horned Grebes, and few flocks of Mergansers (RB?). [cayugabirds-l] Purple Sandpipers
Went back to Fairhaven State Park today, found 3 Purple Sandpipers on the south side of the pier despite the 50+ mph winds that almost knocked me off the pier. They were on a little spit of sand & rocks just before the pier turns right along the channel. (Don't know how they could stand the wind!) I talked to someone a little later who said they didn't see them there, hopefully they will come back. Also had a dead loon (Red-throated?) washed up on the beach. Not much else, lots of Bonaparte's & RB Gulls, some GBB, & Herring Gulls. Mute Swans, Long-tailed Ducks, RB Mergansers flying over the pier. Inland pond had mainly just Am. Coots. Made a trip up to Fairhaven park, not much to see; Mute Swans, Am. Coots, few Bufflehead, the most exciting thing was a pair of Snow Buntings along (and in) the road. In the channel were several Long-tailed Ducks, a lot of Herring Gulls and a few GBB Gulls (and RB Gulls of course). Not much at Montezuma either, 2 mature Bald Eagles, Shovelers, Mallards, and several Hooded Mergansers along auto route. Did have a Rough Legged Hawk on Van Dyne Spoor Rd. After reading the post about possible red-necked grebes off Van Dyne Spoor Rd (Savannah NY), I went out to check the area. All I could find was the usual pied-billed grebes, coots, common gallinules, cormorants, and ring-billed gulls. I spent about 20 minutes at the turn-around and didn't see much else. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] MWR Monday afternoon
Just a few notes around Montezuma, the Greater White-fronted Goose and Snow/Canada (Scanada?) Hybrid are still at the Main Pool. The hybrid flew out with a flock about 8 AM, but returned around noon. Still no sign of the Red Phalarope at Shorebird Flats (area between photo blind and sharp curve). An Imm. BC Night-heron has been hanging out in the little drainage channel on the west end of Benning Marsh (right side of auto route) just before the Thruway section. The Avocet was still at Puddler's Marsh, near the northeast corner and a few Great Egrets are still present. A lot (+500) Pintail were flying over Tschache Pool in the 20-30 minutes while I was there. Also saw my first Ruddy Ducks for the season in the Main Pool Saturday morning. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Red Phalarope
Final note on the subject, the Phalarope at Montezuma's Shorebird Unit is a Red Phalarope. Thanks Jay & Meena for your help. I last saw it near the bend on the auto route about 4:30 PM Saturday. It was moving around through the open water, often close to the road. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Phalarope
Just a note to my previous post, I reviewed my photos and the Phalarope's beak seems very thick with a trace of yellow on the base. As I said I'm no expert but my Sibley's guide seems to lean towards a Red Phalarope, not a Red-necked. If anyone wants to see a photo, I'll be working at the Montezuma Visitor's Center Sunday (10 - 4 PM), or if anyone else was able to identify it, please post. Thanks. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Phalarope at Montezuma
I didn't see the Cackling or Greater White-fronted Geese this morning, but the resident Graylag is back with several Canada Geese at La Rue's Lagoon. I also spotted a Phalarope (Red-necked) in the shorebird unit (just before the sharp curve on the auto route) about 8:30 this morning. I went back through about 4:30 and watched it feeding all over the open water area for about 1/2 an hour. Not an expert on shorebirds but this one appeared to still have a trace of it's breeding plumage, buff color around throat, darker crest and back, and a very dark supercillium (distinguishing it from a Wilson's). -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] MWR/Savannah area
This is just a quick note to let everyone know that the area off Railroad Rd. in Savannah (North of Montezuma) is having a youth hunt on Saturday morning (10/8). This is being coordinated through the Audubon Center (MAC), so you may want to plan to bird elsewhere. An additional note; the Esker Brook Trail will be closing to the general public on Nov 1st for the hunting season. As of Friday evening, the main highlights off Railroad Rd include the Swan family (trumpeters?) a few Northern Harriers, wide variety of ducks, and a couple Imm. BC Night-herons near the dike entrance between the 2 pools. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] MNWR late Sat
Just a quick note on MWR late Saturday. Not much of interest accept two mature Bald Eagles (calling to each other) in a tree across from cell post #6 (before the spillway) and 4 Sandhill Cranes at Mays Point to the right of the platform (closer than usual). It was too dark to try Puddler's Marsh by the time I left May's Point. [cayugabirds-l] Sunday at MWR
Sorry about the late post - just a quick run down on some sightings Sunday morning: No Marbled Godwit on the auto route but did have a Sandhill Crane pass over the shorebird unit and a few Dunlin. A few ducks around; N. Shovelers, BW & GW Teal, Mallards, Redhead, Ring-neck, Gadwall, N. Pintail, Wood Ducks, for a few. Several Common Moorhens at the end of Van Dyne Spoor Rd. Lesser Yellowlegs, Pectoral Sandpipers, and a very well camouflaged American Bittern about 10' from the shoulder along Carncross Rd. On Morgan Rd (at the end) had a pair of Am. Kestrels and 3 Bald Eagles (1 mature, 2 imm. (one of which had a very white front). Final note, a single Snow Goose was near the potato shed (north side of rte 31). -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Caspian Terns, Pectoral Sandpipers, and more.
A quick run through Montezuma brought fewer ducks than last couple weeks but did see 15 Caspian Terns and about a dozen Pectoral Sandpipers, all in the new shorebird pool (before curve). East Road, Van Dyne Spoor & Railroad roads had a lot of Wood Ducks, DC Cormorants, 1 Horned Grebe, and a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers (at Van Dyne Spoor Rd turnaround). Not much at the MAC except a Sandhill Crane putting on a display for himself. -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] New subscriber, east shore Seneca Lake, Fayette NY
Hi, I know it's not Cayuga basin but thought I'd mention a couple finds this morning: Besides the resident 2-3 pair of Buffleheads, had 4 Red-breasted Mergansers (3 female, 1 male) moving south down the lake about a mile south of 96A/East Rd junction. Also had a single Barn Swallow, a very active Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and a very pale Dark-eyed Junco (almost brownish color?). -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
