RE: [cayugabirds-l] Merlin update

2023-04-25 Thread Muhammad Arif
I saw and heard the merlin near east end of Sycamore on 3/17 (I entered it in
eBird) and also on 4/16 when I visited a friend near there. He said he had seen
the merlin last year too.

Hi John,

There is a calling bird (pair?) at Myers Point Park in Lansing as well— I think
they were there last year.

The “Tareyton “ bird may be nesting again near the east end of Sycamore— a
female perched in a tree there giving some softer, different calls.

Any information appreciated.

There is a Common Loon off of east shore park. Saw it earlier around 1pm a

There is also a horned grebe.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] egrets

2021-08-27 Thread Muhammad Arif
I was just at Ithaca Falls and I can confirm they are Great Egrets. One was at
the base of the falls, the other two up on the gorge wall on the north side
farther away from the falls. The one from the base flew over to one of the
egrets, they had a little squabble and all three remained on the wall. Every
once in a while, one would fly down to the water lever and search for food.

Pretty cool to watch wildlife so close to home. (I live two blocks from Ithaca
Falls)

The very rare local chance to observe a Yellow-crowned Night-Heron continues
this morning.

Jay McGowan confirmed that this immaculately plumaged juvenile is still at the
small marina in Taughannock Falls State Park.

Distinguishing this bird from juveniles of our more common Black-crowned
Night-Heron are the smaller rounder head, the thicker shorter black bill, the
longer legs, the longer thinner neck (often extended), and the tiny whitish
spots instead of longer whitish teardrops at the tips of the feathers on the
folded wings.

Yellow-crowned Night-Herons specialize in eating crabs, and this bird has been
eating crayfish.

Hi Sandy and all,

I was there last night.

The Main Pool has been drained this summer for management purposes. See here
for the Refuge's explanation:
https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=1919598661523947=gm.1081190235912319

There is still a stream of water running through the middle and along the drive
as you move closer to the spillway. We saw many Canada geese and goslings of
all ages, Bald Eagles (scan with your binos on the ground way out, they often
sit on the muck), Turkey Vultures, Great Blue Herons, Mallards (and ducklings),
Green-winged Teal, Common Gallinule, American Coot, a few Gadwall, a single
Great Egret, Killdeer, Yellowlegs, Red-winged Blackbirds, Ring-billed Gulls,
Black Terns, and Common Grackles. I didn't see them last night, but I did see
them Monday: the family of Sandhill Cranes that have been there all season. 2
adults and a very leggy baby! Here is another link to a bird survey done at the
Refuge earlier this week:
https://www.facebook.com/FriendsoftheMWC/photos/pcb.10159330589425688/10159330569450688/

Of course there were also Marsh Wrens calling, never seen, and Song Sparrows,
Common Yellowthroats, Yellow Warblers, Eastern Kingbirds, Barn and Tree
Swallows, Purple Martins, and probably more I'm forgetting.

The Prothonotary Warbler on Armitage Rd was singing and very cooperative even
at 6:30pm.

Enjoy!

[cayugabirds-l] Injured Mourning Dove

2021-05-25 Thread Muhammad Arif
There is a mourning dove in my backyard that seems injured. Its left wing is
dropping and when it tries to fly, it can lift up only couple of feet. I’ve
seen the dove yesterday and today, foraging on the ground, and sheltering under
some bushes near the end of the yard. It looks very young, maybe this year’s
fledgling.

If I see the bird again, what would be the right thing to do? Should I contact
someone? Or try to capture it myself and take it to a animal rehab? Or just let
nature take its course?

"I am hearing from others in Tompkins County that clear cutting/brush hogging
under powerlines is currently being done in the area. I want to stress that
this is entirely the WRONG time of year to do this! There are numerous birds
nesting in the utility access areas whose breeding efforts will be destroyed
when vegetation is removed. Have a heart PLEASE. At this time of year, this
removing vegetative cover is cruel and unnecessary. Please wait until autumn
when the birds have finished nesting and are leaving the area for the winter.
Thanks!"

I was dismayed to see that NYSEG has been clearcutting/brush-hogging vegetation
down to bare ground under the powerlines on Salmon Creek Rd. With the nesting
season still well in process, I'm very concerned about the probable mortality
of birds that has resulted in this area of (formerly) dense growth.

While I do not know whether this vegetation removal is happening elsewhere in
the county, I would like to see if we can prevail on NYSEG to delay cutting at
least until later in the summer.

Your thoughts?

[cayugabirds-l] Mystery Egret

2017-10-02 Thread Muhammad Arif
During a bird photography workshop last weekend in Florida, our group came
across a mysterious bird. I have been told that photos of the same bird was
sent to Lab of Ornithology last year and was said to be Great Blue Heron X
