[cayugabirds-l] Red-headed Woodpecker - Lindsay-Parsons
Hi all, I wanted to get word out that Dave Toews found a Red-headed Woodpecker earlier today (Sept. 3) at Lindsay-Parsons Preserve. It was in the snags at the beaver pond. Good birding! [cayugabirds-l] Summer Tanager in McGraw
Hi all, This afternoon, Andy Johnson and I observed the Summer Tanager in McGraw between 2:50 and 3:15 PM. We saw the bird quite well over the course of 25 minutes, in many of the trees around the intersection of Gothic Rd. and Highland Rd. When not in the yard feeding on suet, it could usually be found near the spruces on Gothic Rd, but it seemed to move around quite a bit. [cayugabirds-l] Montezuma Sunday: Ross Goose +
Hi all, This afternoon, Hope Batcheller and I took a quick trip up to Montezuma, with the primary goal to track down Kevin's Purple Gallinule, but also just to see what was around. We started at the MNWR Visitor Center pond, where there were hundreds of Canada Geese, DUNLIN, 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, and scattered Black-bellied Plovers (at least 15). Continuing to the Wildlife Drive, we searched the edge of the cattails and smartweed in vain. When we got to the spot where the gallinule was yesterday, there were 4 or 5 coots, and one juvenile COMMON MOORHEN. Farther down, there were an additional 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS in the new shorebird habitat just before the Oxbow Trail. We then checked Towpath Road, were there were many Canada and Snow Geese. We eventually picked out one adult ROSS' GOOSE that was among the Snow Geese. All of the geese eventually flew off shortly before the sun set. [cayugabirds-l] Sunday MNWR/Cayuga Lake: PACIFIC LOON, godwit, geese +
Hi all, Today, Tim Lenz, Nancy Chen, Chris Dalton and I headed up toward Montezuma and other spots around the lake. Tim and I started birding up the east side of the lake before meeting up with Chris and Nancy at Montezuma, having 2 SURF SCOTERS at Myer's Point and one LINCOLN'S SPARROW along Drake Rd. In the morning, we had a nice diversity of shorebirds at the MNWR Visitor Center pool, with at least 6 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, several small groups of Dunlin, Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs, a Semipalmated Plover, a juvenile Long-billed Dowitcher, and at least 18 Black-bellied Plovers. Along the Wildlife Drive, there were hundreds of Tree Swallows foraging over the Main Pool, as well as 7 Rusty Blackbirds that flew by. At the new shorebird habitat just before the bend we found a juvenile HUDSONIAN GODWIT preening and foraging alongside many Canada Geese. Also there was a single Black-bellied Plover and several Killdeer. At Benning Marsh, we had at least 3 CACKLING GEESE with the Canada Geese. At Towpath, Chris and Nancy had Tennessee Warbler, and 4 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS. We all saw 7 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE preening and sleeping with the Canada Geese in Knox-Marscellus. We did not see any Ross' Geese in the morning, but later in the afternoon, we found 4 ROSS' GEESE (3 adults and 1 juvenile) from East Road as the Snow Geese were foraging on the grass/mud. Also at Knox-Marscellus were Dunlin, Lesser Yellowlegs, White-rumped Sandpipers, and a Stilt Sandpiper. We stopped quickly at Marten's Tract where we were able to find a single NELSON'S SPARROW. There were also several White-crowned and White-throated Sparrows. Van Dyne Spoor had a large group of chickadees and some Myrtle Warblers. We decided to check the Visitor Center and Wildlife Drive again later in the afternoon. There were fewer shorebirds (although this time with 3 Semipalmated Sandpipers), and more Canada Geese. We could not refind the godwit later in the day. The Cackling Geese were still present at Benning. On the way back down the west side of the lake, Tim convinced us that it was a good idea to check Dean's Cove. Tim was, of course, right, and quickly picked out an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and a PACIFIC LOON that was quite far from shore, slowly drifting northward with 6 Common Loons (providing for nice comparison). Although quite distant, the smaller size, the smaller, thinner bill (as compared with the Common Loons it was with), and the pale gray back of the head and neck all were clear on the Pacific Loon. Also present were 7 distant WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS. All in all, a very successful day. [cayugabirds-l] Ithaca birds
Hi all, This morning, Tim Lenz and I hit a few local spots around Ithaca. At Stewart Park, we found 3 BRANT that were on the lake near the sail boat marina. Also at Stewart Park were three juvenile DUNLIN that were roosting on a log that was drifting on the lake near one of the white buoys. Around the Swan Pen were at least 30 Myrtle Warblers and 2 NASHVILLE WARBLERS. Next, we decided to check Freese Road, where we found a LINCOLN'S SPARROW, along with many Song, and some Field, Swamp, White-crowned, White-throated, and Savannah Sparrows. We also ran into Ann Mitchell and Gary Kohlenberg who had an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER in the northeast corner of the garden plots. [cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods this AM
Hi all, Today I took an early morning walk through Sapscuker Woods. It wasn't the huge influx of warblers that I was hoping for, but there were some good birds around. There were many newly arrived Wood Thrushes, some Hermit Thrushes, my first Gray Catbird of the spring, and many Yellow-rumped Warblers. Also new for me was a single Great-crested Flycatcher and Black-throated Green Warbler. One Rusty Blackbird was still singing as well. [cayugabirds-l] Blackburnian Warbler - Sapsucker Woods
Hi all, I was just outside by the north end of the Lab of O and heard a Blackburnian Warbler singing briefly before it took flight. Earlier this morning, I had many of the same birds reported by Matt. The only thing to add from earlier was a single Field Sparrow near the feeders at the main entrance. The migrants are finally here! [cayugabirds-l] Sunday around Montezuma
Hi all, Today, Ann Mitchell and I spent the late morning and afternoon birding around Montezuma and the north end of Cayuga Lake. Much of what we saw have already been posted by others. Our highlights are below: Harris Park, Cayuga: Red-necked Grebe - 2 Montezuma NWR Visitor's Center: Greater Yellowlegs - 4 Lesser Yellowlegs - 1 Van Dyne Spoor Rd. American Golden Plover - 3-4 (While I only ever saw 3 on the ground, at one point, all the shorebirds took flight, and I thought I noticed 4 plovers in the mix) Pectoral Sandpiper - 10-15 Greater Yellowlegs - 6 Dunlin - 1 Cayuga Lake State Park Surf Scoter - 2 Red-necked Grebe - 2 (likely the same two visible from Harris Park) Bonaparte's Gull - 2 Seneca Falls Fairgrounds: Upland Sandpiper - 1 Eastern Meadowlark - 3 All in all a very good day out birding, with wonderful weather.
