[cayugabirds-l] Caching seed

2020-11-21 Thread W Larry Hymes
Once upon a time I was sitting of my front porch reading the paper. I noticed
a chickadee coming in. Not moving the paper I felt the bird land near my foot.
It felt it do something around my foot, and then it flew off. Upon inspection
I found a black oil seed neatly tucked into my shoe. I reluctantly removed it,
with the thought it would not remember where it had stashed the seed.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle

2020-09-04 Thread W Larry Hymes
Late yesterday afternoon as I was beginning my walk around Beebe Lake, I was
passing over the pedestrian bridge on the west end of the lake. When I looked
up, I saw a bird circling. I was most surprised to see the bright white head
of a BALD EAGLE. Just at that moment another large bird flew overhead
downstream. It had a fish in its talons (headfirst). I couldn’t tell if it
was an osprey or an eagle, as it flew downstream into the sun and quickly
disappeared. Oh well! It could have been another eagle (immature).

[cayugabirds-l] Where are the birds?

2018-06-18 Thread W. Larry Hymes
I have noticed, as have others, that the woods have not been as
plentiful with bird song as normal. On my recent walks at Upper
Buttermilk I have been very disappointed in the total absence of Wood
Thrush, Veery, and Scarlet Tanager. By this time in past years I've
always have several of these birds. On my most recent walk (Friday) I
was wonderfully surprised to hear 2 Wood Thrush and 2-3 each of Veery
and Scarlet Tanager. Why the sudden "reappearance"?? I know I'm going
to be criticized for asking, but could some birds (species) still be
migrating in? If not, then why did they finally "show up"? Some could
argue they were busy with nesting. But I've never experienced birds
remaining completely mum during the nesting season. Another argument
could be that they are now moving around after the first brood. I doubt
that would explain the numbers of these species I had all of a sudden
plopping down in Upper Buttermilk? By the way, we picnicked at Upper
Treman yesterday and bird song was relatively infrequent. Do any of you
have any thoughts on this subject??

[cayugabirds-l] Mockingbird surprise

2018-04-23 Thread W. Larry Hymes
As I just happened to glance out our kitchen window this morning, a new
yard bird popped in and landed on our clothesline pole -- MOCKINGBIRD!
And I do mean popped in, as it was here for about 5 seconds before
departing. We haven't had a mockingbird in our yard since 2012.

[cayugabirds-l] Very strange spring!

2018-04-20 Thread W. Larry Hymes
While walking through Mundy Wildflower Garden today, I came across both
RUBY-CROWNED and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS foraging together. That in
itself is not so unusual. What was really strange, however, was they
were foraging among the leaf litter *on the ground*!! That's a first
for me!

We are still having FOX SPARROWS --- 9 days in a row, and counting! I
tried to trade a Fox Sparrow for Ann Mitchell's Towhee, but she hasn't
seen it for awhile. How about you, Asher. Got anything good to swap
for one of "my" Fox Sparrows?

[cayugabirds-l] Hermit Thrush/Fox Sparrow

2018-04-17 Thread W. Larry Hymes
This morning as I casually looked out our bay window to see how the
birds were doing, a bird landed on our clothesline pole. I could tell
it was different from the others, so when I looked through binocs, it
turned out to be a HERMIT THRUSH. This is an unusual bird for our
residential location. Anthropomorphizing this bird, it had a surprised
look on its face as though saying, "Where the heck am I?!? I must have
taken a wrong turn somewhere?" It only stayed momentarily.

Today we still have a FOX SPARROW (visual and singing), and yesterday we
had 3 show up! That makes 6 days they've been here --- in the past they
have normally only stayed for a couple days. I'm assuming the weather
patterns have a big part to do with this --- stalled fronts to our north
and no big push from the south to help/encourage them to move on? Any
thoughts about this from you professional or amateur meteorologists?

[cayugabirds-l] Actions of Red-Bellied young

2017-08-19 Thread W. Larry Hymes
This morning a male adult and young RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER landed on our
silver maple. At one point the young bird pecked very rapidly, and with
great ferocity, while the adult sat calmly within a couple feet. After
its vigorous rapping, I can imagine the young bird saying something
like, "Okay! Now what am I suppose to do!?" It then proceeded to walk up
the trunk and right over top the adult, who didn't seem to mind. If
only we humans could show such patience with our young!

[cayugabirds-l] Red-tail crowd

2017-08-02 Thread W. Larry Hymes
While slowly cruising Armitage Rd. yesterday afternoon, I kept hearing a
RED-TAILED HAWK constantly cheeeing. As soon as I spotted the bird,
3 other birds flew up to it wondering what all the fuss was about -
GOLDFINCH, CEDAR WAXWING, and a tiny BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER that appeared
to look the hawk directly in the face! The hawk apparently didn't like
the crowd and promptly flew off.

Sara Jane and I were treated to good looks of a LEAST BITTERN at Larue's
Lagoon. We got to show the bird to a family from Florida. It's really
nice to be able to get out of the car at designated areas along the
wildlife drive!!

We, too, saw large numbers of GREAT EGRETS at Knox-Marcellus.

[cayugabirds-l] Hummingbird!!!

2017-07-27 Thread W. Larry Hymes
As we were talking with our son Chris in our living room on Tuesday, he
exclaimed excitedly, "A hummingbird just came to your feeder!!" It
moved out of sight, but soon returned. We had not seen one at our
feeders since May 11

I've written about this phenomenon before. To paraphrase the "Field of
Dreams" movie, when he's here, the birds will come! This is
probably purely a matter of coincidence. HOWEVER, it has happened
enough times before to make me suspect that perhaps other "forces" may
be at play.

Have others of you been seeing hummingbirds of late? If not, maybe I
could send our son to your house!

[cayugabirds-l] Downy feeding young

2017-07-11 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Sara Jane and I were amused this morning by the actions of two young
downy woodpeckers being fed by the mother at our shell peanut feeder.
They were obviously trying to get the hang of foraging for food. They
would peck randomly on whatever they could find, including the top of
our platform feeder and even a metal post. While the mother was
extracting bits of peanut seed from the feeder, one of the young landed
next to her and gave it a go at pecking on the peanut shells, but with
little success. I can imagine it thinking, "How am I suppose to do
this. I can't seem to make it work. You make it look so easy!" Unlike
us humans who might become impatient with of our young for not getting
it right, the mother downy just kept pecking away and feeding the
young. She knows that "leading by example" is the best teaching method,
and the young birds would very soon be able to forage on their own.

[cayugabirds-l] Osprey, Pine Warbler, etc.

2017-05-23 Thread W. Larry Hymes
While walking Beebe Lake/Mundy early yesterday afternoon, I saw an
OSPREY carrying a fish and heading in a generally easterly direction
(going to Game Farm Road??). Also, while walking Comstock Knoll, I once
again heard a PINE WARBLER. Finally, I ran into another birder at the
upper end of Beebe (sorry, can't remember her name!). When we see each
other on rare occasions, we'll discuss what birds we've been seeing.
She was puzzled by the call of one particular bird, which she described
as like a Robin, but with a sore throat. Focusing only on the "sore
throat", I half-heartedly mentioned the possibility of yellow-throated
vireo. I didn't have time to stay there and think what else it might
be, so we left each other, walking in opposite directions. A very short
time later it finally came to me. I said to myself, you dummy it was a
scarlet tanager! By then we were too far apart for me to tell her. I
hope she reads this message!

I had heard a scarlet tanager a few days before at Beebe doing the same
song, and I too was initially perplexed. It took me a short time,
before the name of the bird came to me. Being a mostly casual birder,
at the start of each new season I find myself having difficulty pulling
out the names of birds singing songs that sound all too familiar ---
sort of like starting all over!!

[cayugabirds-l] Pine Warbler

2017-05-19 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Early afternoon today I'm very confident that I heard a trilling PINE
WARBLER on Comstock Knoll at the Cornell Botanical Garden. The bird
kept repeating the same relatively short pattern over and over. Could
not find it with naked eye. When I did playback, it would stop trilling
momentarily. Definitely not chipping sparrow! Has anyone else seen
pine warbler at the knoll recently?

[cayugabirds-l] Migration proceeding

2017-05-11 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Maybe more birds are starting to move north. This morning we had our
first R-T HUMMINGBIRD and BALTIMORE ORIOLE. Also, we had _*three*_ male
ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK at our feeders.

[cayugabirds-l] Further info Yellow House Finch

2017-05-05 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Upon reading the literature, it appears that captive house finches can
have yellow coloration because of the lack of carotenoids in their
diet. Would the most likely explanation for this particular bird be
that it escaped from captivity?

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow House Finch

[cayugabirds-l] Indigo Bunting

2017-05-03 Thread W. Larry Hymes
When I looked out our kitchen windows, I noticed a good-sized flock of
sparrows. As I proceeded to count their numbers, my eye picked up on a

Hope it sticks around for a little while. They typically pop in and
then pop out.

As I just happened to look out our kitchen window, I was very surprised

[cayugabirds-l] Brown Thrasher

2017-04-21 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Our foy BROWN THRASHER showed up at 5:45pm. It was rooting in the layer
of mulch along our garden fence line.

For those curious about the PIGEON that had been in our yard for the
past couple of days, I finally caught the bird and took it to the Janet
Swanson (Cornell) Wildlife Rehab. Center off of Snyder Hill Rd. To the
untrained eye the bird looked healthy. However, it couldn't fly very
far, so we assumed it had a damaged wing. When examined by a
veterinarian, it turns out the bird was emaciated. When I left the
center, a rehab person was holding it in a towel and letting it munch
away on a cup of seed. It was a racing pigeon. There was no charge to
drop the bird off with them. I felt compelled to make a donation!

[cayugabirds-l] Great Blue Heron - Upper Buttermilk

2016-12-14 Thread W. Larry Hymes
On a walk around Upper Buttermilk yesterday afternoon I was surprised to
see a GREAT BLUE HERON lift off and fly upstream from the marshy area at
Lake Treman. Don't see how it could find sufficient food there to
survive, much less just keep warm. Selfishly it would be nice to have
it stick around for the Xmas Bird Count, but I would much prefer that it
fly farther south where there is a much better source of food.

The only other birds seen were a flock of ROCK DOVE and a loudly calling
PILEATED WOODPECKER.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl - Not

2016-10-27 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Just a little clarification. Seeing this bird at a distance without
binocs could leave the manager of the farm (a non-birder) with the
impression that this was indeed a Snowy Owl. This is especially so,
since Snowys have shown up on the farm on rare occasions. I did suggest
to him that it might be an "albino" Red-tail, but he was reasonably
certain in his mind that he was seeing a Snowy. Thus my report to
Cayugabirds, and Sara Jane's rare bird alert.

I thought this was much too early, but I don't know the earliest first
arrival date in the fall/early winter of Snowy in the basin. However, I
do have a vague recollection of Snowys being seen as early as November.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl

2016-10-26 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Just got a call from the manager of the Thompson Veg. Research Farm that
a SNOWY OWL is hanging around the farm. The farm is just outside
Freeville on the road that goes to McClean. It was last seen in a
cherry tree on the south side of the road near Fall Creek. Isn't this
way early

[cayugabirds-l] Yard birds

2016-10-24 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Have had some interesting birds at our feeders recently. We've had a
CHIPPING SPARROW every day since Thursday. Yesterday a first-winter
male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK stopped by briefly. This morning there was
a juvenile male RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD feeding on the ground with the
other birds. It disappeared when a COOPER'S HAWK flew in and took one
of the mourning doves. It hasn't returned.

[cayugabirds-l] Yes to White-Crowned Sparrow

2016-05-17 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Bill Mcaneny reported a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW and asked if anyone else
still has this species. We had a small flock up until last Thursday. I
thought they had moved on. But on Sunday a single White-Crowned showed
up and is still making an appearance --- late straggler?? We also still
have ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS. Based on our records both species should
have moved on by now. But it's really nice to have them stick around
longer.

Another surprise bird for our yard popped in today --- SWAINSON'S
THRUSH!! Was this a Hawthorn Woods bird that took a wrong turn???

[cayugabirds-l] Grosbeak, Sparrows, House Finch mating dance

2016-04-28 Thread W. Larry Hymes
They're on the move. We had our first ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK (male) at
our feeders this morning. Also, our WHITE-THROATED SPARROW numbers seem
to have dropped off overnight. Only counted 20 or so thus far today
(45+ yesterday). We now have 2 WHITE-CROWNS. It's nice to hear their
plaintive song again.

I was amused to watch 2 male HOUSE FINCH flitting (dancing?) up and down
at each other on our roof, while a female sat next to them appearing to
be totally uninterested in their shenanigans. If I were to substitute
members of our own species in this play, I can imagine the female
thinking to herself, "You guys are weird!"

[cayugabirds-l] White-throats

2016-04-27 Thread W. Larry Hymes
As of this past Friday, we've been having large numbers of
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS. Since Monday we've conservatively had 45 in
our yard. Before last Friday, we had been having very large numbers of
JUNCOS -- as many as 60. When the White-throats migrated in Thursday
night, the bulk of the Juncos coincidentally migrated out (don't like
each other?!?!?). I've been making sure to keep the lawn at our back
feeders well supplied with white millet.

Today we had our first of the year WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW. It looked a
bit perplexed being surrounded by the large number of White-Throats
everywhere.

We report our yard lists on e-Bird.

[cayugabirds-l] Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Hermit Thrush

2016-04-17 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Know others have already seen them, but I was very excited to find 3
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS flitting about and vocalizing up in our scotch
pine. Saw them at 8:00am. Perhaps they dropped in after migrating over
night. We also had a HERMIT THRUSH show up yesterday evening. It was
very vigorously scratching about under our neighbor's shrubs. Another
first of year for us!

[cayugabirds-l] Field Sparrow

2016-04-14 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Of late our Junco numbers have begun dwindling. Sorry to see them go,
but at this time of year the call of nature compels them to start
dispersing/migrating to their "nesting grounds". The bright side of
this is that often they are replaced, at least temporarily, with new
birds. This was the case this morning when I looked out the window and
saw some different looking sparrows. With binocs I was pleasantly
surprised to see two very attractive FIELD SPARROWS foraging side by
side. They had apparently just "dropped in" (literally??) to see what
all the bird activity was about. Interestingly, I seem to recall that
whenever we've had this species in our yard, it has only been a single
individual.

[cayugabirds-l] Migrants

Should also mention that we've been having a JUNCO subspecies intergrade
with a light brown back and crown. Its bill is also a lighter pink than
the normal slate-colored birds.

[cayugabirds-l] Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

2015-02-26 Thread W. Larry Hymes
An absolutely gorgeous YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER male just came to one of
our peanut feeders. Doubtful this is a migrant, since our first
sightings don't occur until April.

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vultures here all winter

2015-02-25 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Reports came out of the woodwork about Turkey Vultures hanging around
our area all winter. This shows I don't get out and do much birding
during the winter months. It's far more comfortable looking out our
kitchen windows.

I still would like any thoughts you may have about true migrants like
Red-Wings showing up at this time, when the weather is very harsh and
the snow cover is very extensive. Do they not have a way to evaluate
conditions on their way north and decide to hold up awhile when
conditions are especially bad? Or is the timing of their northward
migration pretty much fixed --- for example, this is the time when
Red-Wings usually start to show up here. So when the winds are
favorable for migration, many of the birds take off and, flying at
night, don't know what to expect until they land the next morning. Then
they have to make due with whatever they happen to find. In this case,
I would think they would have a more difficult time finding adequate
food sources and good places to roost. On the bright side of things,
however, time is on their side --- the weather will continue to improve
as the season progresses (although more slowly some years than
others!!). All they have to do is hang in there!

[cayugabirds-l] Turkey Vulture

2015-02-25 Thread W. Larry Hymes
About 20 minutes ago I was very surprised to see a TURKEY VULTURE
soaring about near East Hill Plaza. Having heard no reports this
winter, I'm assuming this is an early migrant. I've often wondered why
this bird, and the red-wing blackbirds

Considering the severe weather and heavy snow cover in our area, why
would this bird, and the RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS that Dave Nutter saw on
the 22nd, not delay their northward migration until conditions improve
considerably? As they move north, aren't they taking into account the
conditions they are encountering and deciding whether to proceed or wait
it out? Any thoughts!?!?

[cayugabirds-l] Redpolls back

2015-02-13 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Two COMMON REDPOLL (M & F) returned to our yard today. They seem to be
feeding more comfortably with the other birds, so perhaps they will
stick around for awhile.

[cayugabirds-l] Redpoll in Ithaca proper

2015-02-12 Thread W. Larry Hymes
Maybe the REDPOLL are finally beginning to trickle into our urban
environs from out of the sticks! A while ago I had two birds briefly
pop into our yard (120 Vine Street). They may have been concerned with
the frenzied feeding activity of the many larger birds at our feeders
and decided to look elsewhere, as I have not seen them since. I sure
hope they decide to return, and I hope others of you in the city will be
fortunate enough to have them come to your feeders.

[cayugabirds-l] Yard Red-Tail

2015-01-02 Thread W. Larry Hymes
A RED-TAILED HAWK is sitting on a post at the corner of our garden,
about 15' from our kitchen window. I'm guessing its looking to take one
of our many squirrels. I recently put up a metal squirrel decoration on
our dead tree out front (a Xmas present from our daughter). Maybe the
bird took it to be an invitation to come in and dine at our "restaurant"!
