No. we have not done that. Perhaps it's time to ask the Lab of O if that can be
arranged. Can we discuss it at the meeting?

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club meeting and speaker dinner Sept. 14, 2015

has flourished, and whats to come within the unique Lab founded by
Arthur Allen and colleagues in 1915. Moving beyond history, this seminar looks
ahead to the challenges faced by the Lab and everyone who cares about nature.
We must regard our first hundred years as a trial runan
experiment that has proven itself worthy of another hundred-year run, but this
time the expectationsour measures of successwill be far more
stringent, and the stakes are far higher as we work to help save the
earths birds and biodiversity. Members are invited to dinner with the

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club meeting and speaker dinner - Monday, Oct. 13

2014-10-08 Thread cl...@juno.com
The Cayuga Bird Club will be meeting on Monday, October 13, at 7:30 at the
Cornell Lab of Ornithology, with cookies and conversation at 7:15.

Our speaker, Julie Zickefoose, a writer, artist and naturalist at home in the
Appalachian foothills of Ohio, will give her presentation ldquo; The Bluebird
Effect: Uncommon Bonds with Common Birdsrdquo;. ldquo;Every day, I roam our
80 acre wildlife sanctuary, and every day I find something new. This deep
relationship with the land is the wellspring for my writing and art. ldquo;

Join writer/artist Julie Zickefoose for an evening exploring the intersection
of birds and spirituality in our lives. Can a bird become a demigod to some?
Can certain species achieve the level of a totem or spirit guide? Are there
phenomena that occur at the intersection of man and nature that cannot be
explained by conventional means? These are concepts that have surfaced over a
lifetime of helping broken birds and mothering those who are orphaned, and in
so doing coming to know birds from the inside out. A scientist at heart, Julie
has lately found herself wondering more than knowing. This talk will help you
keep your spirit ldquo;open to the thrust of grace, rdquo; thinking about the
unexplainables in your own life.

Members are invited to dinner with Julie before the meeting at 5:30 at
Aladdins in Collegetown. Please RSVP by noon Monday to cl...@juno.com so
reservations can be made.

Hope to see you Monday!

And if interested:
Julie will also be doing a talk for the Cornell Plantations called, Personal
Habitat: Creating a Haven for Wildlife (and Yourself) - the story of an
artist's love affair with a piece of land, and the birds, animals, and plants
that inhabit it. Simple habitat enhancements can take a back yard from bland to
bustling with wildlife. In this talk, artist/writer Julie Zickefoose shows how
she and her husband have transformed their abandoned farm into a wildlife
sanctuary and observatorymdash;a perfect personal habitat.
Date/time: Wednesday, October 15; 7:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Cost: Free; no-registration is required.

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club Meeting and speaker dinner Mon., April 14

The Cayuga Bird Club will be meeting on Monday, April 14,
at 7:30 at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, with cookies and conversation
at 7:15.
Saw-whet Owls: The Cute Factor Aids Science: 206,000 Birds Banded by
Insomniac Banders Reveal Migration Patterns and Regional Reproductive Success
Speakers: Dr. John L. Confer, Biology Department, Ithaca College; Dr. Leann
Kanda, co-analyst, Biology Department, Ithaca College
The Northern Saw-whet Owl is widely distributed, and an intensive banding
effort provides a data trove for this tiny raptor. Banding records combined
with GIS analyses reveal exceptional detail about migration patterns in eastern
and central North America . This, with the ability to determine age classes by
plumage, allows analysis of temporal/spatial patterns of reproductive success
for breeding populations in different portions of North America. Dr. Confer
will talk about his own banding effort and how his data, combined with that of
other banders, has helped answer many questions about this little owl.
Members are invited to dinner with John and his wife Karen before the meeting

at Taste of Thai Express. Please RSVP by noon Monday to cl...@juno.com

[cayugabirds-l] Cayuga Bird Club meeting and speaker dinner - Monday, March 11

2013-03-07 Thread cl...@juno.com
The Cayuga Bird Club will hold its monthly meeting next Monday, March 11, at
7:30 at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, with cookies and conversation at 7:15.

Nick Mason, PhD Student, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at
Cornell University will be presenting Complex colors and simple songs?
Exploring evolutionary relationships between plumage, vocalizations, andhabitat
in tanagers (Thraupidae).
Tanagers are renowned for their bright, colorful plumage but
are regarded by most field guides as “poor songsters.” The
idea of an evolutionary ‘trade-off’ between song and plumage
dates to the days of Darwin; however, empirical evidence for
this trend remains scarce. Nick will discuss his master’s thesis on the newly
redefined tanagers with respect to the relationship between song and plumage
elaboration and the habitats in which they are expressed.

The Club will also be hosting Nick for dinner at Aladdins in Collegetown at
5:30 pm prior to the meeting. This is a great opportunity for members to meet
with Nick and others while enjoying some great food. If you would like to join
