[cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant Snow Buntings

2023-03-01 Thread Marie P. Read
10:30 this morning, a flock of a couple of hundred Snow Buntings was flying
around the fields at the east end of Mt Pleasant Road. They were also seen by
Steve Fast and me on Sunday morning.
There's not much food up there since the fields were mowed so closely and there
are very few weeds, so I can't imagine the buntings will stick around.

And in the same area, around 10am I spotted a flock of about 100 Common
Redpolls in the field where they spent several weeks previously...that is the
weedy field just below the crest of the hill at the easternmost end of Mt
Pleasant Rd.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant SNOW BUNTINGS! Etc.

2017-01-02 Thread Marie P. Read
Just spent a delightful 45 minutes or so traipsing over the fields in search of
the big flock of Snow Buntings that were found by Gladys Birdsall on
yesterday's Christmas Bird Count. I found them exactly where she had, way in
the back of the field behind the observatory. What fun to photograph! I also
encountered 3 Horned Larks and 6 Wild Turkeys.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings!

2016-01-05 Thread Marie P. Read
I just spent the last 15-20 minutes watching and trying to count a flock of
Snow Buntings feeding in some green-ish weeds at the junction of Mt Pleasant
and Mineah Rd. I estimate there were about 60. Eventually they all took off
flying high to the south, but when I rounded the corner on my way home at least
part of the flock was swirling round the corn stubble field opposite my house,
a place I've never seen them before. Since I could see them from my front
porch, Snow Bunting is now officially on my yard list!

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings!

2016-01-04 Thread Marie P. Read
Well, just in the nick of time for CBC Count Week, I saw a flock of around 20
Snow Buntings just west of the observatory on Mt Pleasant Rd (south side of the
road) as I drove by there around 3:55 pm today. Lots of white on the wings was
distinctive.
Earlier there was a large flock of Horned Larks close to the road at the
eastern end of Mt Pleasant Rd, as well as the regular flock of juncos in the
dip between hills where the farm is.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings, Horned Larks

2015-01-29 Thread Marie P. Read
The roadsides along Mt Pleasant Rd have been plowed far back exposing some bare
ground and these opened up areas have attracted a lot of Snow Buntings and
Horned Larks (more of the latter than I've seen together all winter up here) to
feed today. Given these close views, it is worth checking the flocks for
longspurs, before the snow drifts over to cover up the bare ground again. (I
didn't see any though...)

HI all,

In addition to the balmy southerly breeze, the delights of my walk up Mt
Pleasant Rd this morning (10:15 - 11:15 or so) included:

A flock of 35-40 Snow Buntings
A singing White-breasted Nuthatch
A singing Black-capped Chickadee

Ah, spring!

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings

2013-11-24 Thread Marie P. Read
Mount Pleasant has its first Snow Buntings of the season…2 up there on the road
about 3:45 pm today. Also a Downy Woodpecker flitting to and fro foraging on
corn stalks (both standing stalks as well as fallen ones). Maybe looking for
wintering larvae?

Beastly windy up there today!

[cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant = snow buntings, R.-l. hawks

2013-02-16 Thread Susan Fast
I had a couple interesting sightings during my morning walk along Mt.
Pleasant Rd. today. First was 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS (1 light, 1 dark) that
appeared flying low from the south. They seemed to be together, showed no
inclination to hang around, and disappeared over the trees to the north.
Apparently migrating.

Inspired by this, I tried a mini-hawkwatch from the Observatory, hoping for
more. After about 10 minutes, I was awakened by buzzing sounds from above,
and looked up to see a flock of SNOW BUNTINGS descending. They milled about
the building and adjacent fields for a minute, alighting once briefly. Then
they were gone. My feeling is that they were migrants looking for a place
to stop and eat, but found nothing. I estimated 150 birds.

[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Snow Buntings/Horned Larks

2013-02-07 Thread Marie P Read
Up on the hill for my exercise walk this morning between 10:45 and 11:45, I saw
a flock of 20-ish Snow Buntings at the eastern end of Mt Pleasant Rd. And at
three different spots between there and the observatory I found individual
Horned Larks, most likely the vanguard of those that typically show up in
mid-February to take possession of small patches of open ground and start their
flight songs on high, gearing up for breeding. I have a feeling that, come
tomorrow, they may regret their decision to get here early!
