[cayugabirds-l] Northern shrike-Hile School rd

2023-12-23 Thread anneb . clark
At about 430 pm, a young N Shrike was perched in the clump of trees, N side of
road, that is about 60 m east of 220 Hile School Rd. This is the
address/mailbox at the east end of the unfinished road running through the
wetland. The clump of trees sits just west ( toward Rt 38) of a two- track
running N into the field.

The shrike was first sitting atop the tallest tree, then popped down on the
east face of the bushes near a single bushy pine.
It has a distinct but not extensive black eye stripe, white undersides to
retrices,a soft brownish cap, nice round head shape and bill accentuated with
light areas around base. It was continually doing slow tail bobs. In a few
views, slight tessellated patterning on breast was visible. It was deep dusk on
a cloudy afternoon so detail was hard, but my son Toby managed to get a few
pictures through my binocs.
It Made several dive- forays into the weedy patch (golden rod, milkweed )
surrounding the clump. Hopefully it got something and will stay??
Full disclosure, we have been releasing some of the 15-20 Peromyscus live
trapped in our basement right into the tree- brush clump. Hmmm.

Anyway it was a very exciting find for Toby and I! I put it in eBird and will
upload a couple of pics tomorrow—good only to convince one of the ID, nothing
more.

Anne

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Northern Shrike in Caroline

2023-03-18 Thread John Luther Cisne
The Northern Shrike was on Creamery Road about 100 yards south of the ridge
crest around 3:45 PM, sitting on one fence pole and another between stoops to
the grass.

Found it very easily. Beautiful specimen. Performed beautifully, too, coming
as close as 50 yards, and turning this way and that to give an all-around view.
Never got a better look at one.

For a couple of days there's been a Northern Shrike on Creamery Road in
Caroline. It's been foraging in fields on the right side of the road, coming
from 79. This morning it was perching up on an isolated bush in the middle of
the upper field, the one with an electric fence around it. The shrike was
active and often out of sight, but it returned to that bush frequently,
perching on top of the bush in various locations. It also perched on top of
small fence posts near the bush a couple of times.

Also foraging over the fields was a Northern Harrier, and at least one Eastern
Meadowlark was active and singing in the field. A resident Common Raven could
occasionally be heard calling as well.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Northern Shrike at Landon Rd and 79 - still there 4pm-ish

2018-03-18 Thread Marie P. Read
Jeff's Northern Shrike was still in at Landon Road around 4:00pm when I watched
it for 20 minutes or so. Far off the road in a shrubby field just SE of the
Landon/Slaterville Road junction. Too far for photos, but a cool bird to watch
nonetheless! And the lone Snow Bunting was foraging along the roadside too.

Thanks to Jeff for sharing with us.

[cayugabirds-l] Northern Shrike, Lapland Longspur, GWF Goose

2016-01-02 Thread Jay McGowan
A couple of highlights near Montezuma so far today:

NORTHERN SHRIKE now in a tree near the end of Carncross Road.

Three GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE with a flock of Canada and Snow geese
along Rt. 89 just north of 5&20. The whole flock took off a few minutes
after we found them and broke up in all directions, so not sure where they
ended up.

A continuing MARSH WREN near the observation tower on the main pool, along
with the same diversity of waterfowl in the reduced open water.

And at least two LAPLAND LONGSPURS found by Joe Wing with Horned Larks just
south of the potatoes building in the Mucklands.

[cayugabirds-l] Northern Shrike - Brooktondale (slightly out of basin)

2013-03-18 Thread Melissa Groo

This morning my 7-year-old daughter said excitedly, "There's an unusual looking
bird at the feeder." Last time she said that, it turned out to be an Evening
Grosbeak (many months ago), so I ran over, to find a grayish bird with black on
its wings, sitting on a branch a few feet from our platform feeder. My mind
tried to compute what it was, and first went to mockingbird, which is pretty
rare to begin with around here, but then I realized it was a Northern Shrike,
as I took in the distinct mask and hooked beak. Soon after it took off in
pursuit of a mourning dove, perched atop a tall tree across the road for a bit
while the chickadees went crazy vocalizing, and then finally flew off.
I did manage to get some snapshots for documentation from inside the house when
I first saw it.
A first ever yard bird for us!

The shrike doesn't seem to like cars pulling underneath where it is perched.
It has now flown across East Shore drive along the powerline area. it didn't go
too far in there, so it may return to Cayuga Vista Drive.

[cayugabirds-l] Northern Shrike, Short-eared owls Blackbirds etc.

2012-02-26 Thread Meena Haribal
Hi all,

I did a trip around the lake and highlights were large raft of Athya ducks,
Tundra swans (far out in the middle of the lake), flotilla of Snow Geese in the
same locations I have been seeing in the past (don't they ever move?) mostly
around Union Springs and the latter near Aurora.

At Tshache, there was a young first year Northern shrike, I had to look into
book to make sure it was not a logger-headed. Lots of geese were heading north
of Montezuma, I tried to follow them some distance but got blocked by mass of
land with no roads. I also saw several flocks of blackbirds - mixture of
Red-winged Blackbirds, Common Grackle, Starlings and few cowbirds in varying
compositions, some flocks were pure grackles and some mixture of grackles and
red-winged blackbirds and others with starlings and cowbirds. But I saw only a
few flocks head into the MNWR marsh at sunset.

Also many paired Horned Larks, horns were really standing up on a few
individuals were seen along some back roads. Other birds of interests a
Northern Mockingbird, and pair of Eastern Bluebirds along Lake Ridge Road.

On the way back just past Ovid intersection on 89, near 7133 house a
Short-eared flew very close over my car and hundred or two feet ahead another
came head on and headed to join the previous owl. I turned back to relocate
them, but they seemed invisible.

[cayugabirds-l] Northern Shrike, Caroline

2012-01-10 Thread Dave Nutter
This afternoon (10 January 2012) I found a first winter NORTHERN SHRIKE along Creamery Road, south of Slaterville in Caroline. The bird was relatively brown, with an indistinct mask, a mostly pale bill, and lots of scaliness/barring below. It was on the west side of the road in the first field south of Six-Mile Creek, which is weedy and has several patches of shrubs and hedgerows. When I first saw it, the shrike was flying to a large central thicket carrying something dark in its talons. This was a distant binocular view, so I cannot say what the cargo was except that it was substantial (not an insect) yet considerably smaller than the shrike, and had no very obvious limbs, wings or tail. I'm guessing mouse or shrew, not bird A minute later the shrike flew from that thicket, not carrying anything, so I figure it probably cached a prey item rather than eating it. This second flight which I saw took it to the top of a shrub in the middle of the south edge of the field, where it sat allowing great scope viewing for several minutes, after which it disappeared when I took my eye off it. I swear birds time their flights to when you glance away from the scope aimed at them.On 8 December 2011 Melissa Groo photographed a first winter Northern Shrike along Boiceville Road. That being the opposite side of the same block, I suspect it may be the same bird. She expressed dismay at development along that road, but I found reassurance that the habitat was still good enough to attract a first winter bird. This points to possible site fidelity over a period of 1 month by one individual, but different individuals being attracted to this site over the years. Without distinctive characteristics, which one might be able to determine with a series of photos, I think it's hard to be sure about multi-winter site fidelity.--Dave Nutter

Re: [cayugabirds-l] northern shrike back in Danby

2012-01-10 Thread Sandy Podulka
Thanks to Eric's message, our FOURTH visit to find the shrike was a
success: my daughter spotted it in the trees along Nelson and then it
flew to the hay bales, giving us an excellent look--breast barring
and all. It's a good thing, too, because my family was ready to
mutiny if we didn't see it yet again! And even today, we didn't see
it until our third round of all the roads, having driven by that spot
twice without seeing the bird.

2011-12-20 Thread Marie P Read
Hi all,

Eric's shrike was there in the same field again today, between about 1:45 and
3:30 pm. Perching both on hay bales and in the more distance hedgerows. At one
point caught a mouse after watching from a haybale, shook it vigorously, and
eventually flew off with it presumably to cache. Fun to watch.

[cayugabirds-l] Northern Shrike, Ellis Hollow Creek Road

2011-11-12 Thread Paul Anderson

Hi!

I found a Northern Shrike on Ellis Hollow Creek Road this morning at
about 10am, just east of the junction with Turkey Hill Road. There is a
field there with horses and a few barns. To the right of the barns are
some bushes that follow the line of a small stream. The bird was in
those bushes.

Previously I had stopped on Mt Pleasant hoping to find Pipits. No luck
there, but I did find a pair of Horned Larks.

[cayugabirds-l] Northern Shrike

2011-03-13 Thread joe & Diana
Hi All,
I missed all the fun yesterday because of work so I thought I might find some
Snow Geese today. I saw mostly Canada Geese, Swans, and a lot of Pintails in
the mucklands. There was also Mallards and Widgeons. The light was pretty bad
and it was also raining. I did not see the Eagles at the lock. I really gave a
little time to try and see her head at the nest but did not. On Van Dyne Spoor
after a slippery ride in the mud and potholes, I was rewarded with a Northern
Shrike. I watched it hunt small rodents more or less dropping down on them. I
have a very blown up photo of it with its prey and one displaying its wing
patterns. No Snow Geese no matter how much I looked!

[cayugabirds-l] northern shrike grabbing a meal

2011-02-14 Thread David Diaz

I spotted a northern shrike on Keady Road (between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes)
near the intersection with Beltzer Road. It was perched in a field on the
south side of the Keady Road. I watched in total amazement as it flew to
chopped cornfield (at the edge of woodlands) right in front of me. It seemed
to be wrestling with something on the snow. It then flew up about 10 feet into
the air a hovered (like a kingfisher) for about 10 seconds; flew back down to
the ground where it proceeded to bash the heck out of a rodent with its beak.
Judging from the tail and non-chubbiness, I think it was a short-tailed shrew
although maybe it was a vole. Anyways the shrike grabbed the rodent by the
back of the head and waited until the furry rascal stopped struggling, then
flew all the way back across the road, the field and beyond the perch it was
originally in.

I still can't believe that it was able to spot the rodent from such a long
distance away (easily 3 football fields). Amazing!

Spotted two rough-legged hawks in the area as well as a couple hundred
snowbuntings that were near a one-story green dairy barn. Saw lots of horned
larks here and there too. One small flock of flying snow geese as well.

[cayugabirds-l] Northern Shrike, Trumpeter Swans, Turkey Vultures, Peregrine Falcon

2011-01-31 Thread Dave Nutter
Yesterday (Sunday 30 Jan) Ann Mitchell, Bob McGuire & I went to Summerhill in the morning hoping to see the Hoary Redpolls in the big flock of Common Redpols which Matt Young reported on Lane E along Lake Como Rd.  We met Jay McGowan there with similar hopes, and although we saw a lot of COMMON REDPOLLS at times, which is quite fun, it was a very challenging viewing situation, with birds flying between close spruce trees and behind the house with the feeders.  Although Ann said she briefly saw a light colored individual, none of the rest of us saw any solid candidates.  We also swung by the Hovel Chalet on our way there and back, where there were impressive numbers of BLUE JAYS and lots of other species, but we did not find any Evening Grosbeaks.  However we did find a very cooperative and gratifying immature NORTHERN SHRIKE atop the tallest twig of a tree on Eaton Rd.  Ann then had to go to work, but after dropping her off in Ithaca, Bob & I went clockwise around the lake.  One thing we noticed was TUNDRA SWANS seemingly scattered along all the shoreline.  When we got to the north end of the lake we saw solid birdless ice.  There were no openings even at Mud Lock or Harris Park.  However near Mud Lock there were 5 TRUMPETER SWANS sitting on the ice.  They were not veryclose, yet they did not tolerate us using a scope and binoculars through the open window of Bob's car.  The 4 adults bobbed their heads then flew north through a heavy snowfall, making their loud bleating call as they went.  The single immature stayed sitting on the ice, neck vertical.  I wonder where the adults went and how long it was before they were reunited.  The ice comes south well past Lower Lake Rd on the west.  We did not drive that road, as we saw people walking many places on the ice, but instead went west to Van Cleef Lake  That, too, was frozen solid and birdless.  On the east, the ice comes past Union Springs, as far south as Farley's Point  In Union Springs we saw an Eastern Screech-Owl plugging the hole of the box in the Factory Street Pond. We did not see vultures yesterday, but early this afternoon (1220) I had a chance to drive by Burdick Hill Road briefly.  I wish I could've stayed longer.  Instead of 14 Turkey Vultures and 1 Black Vulture on the back row of fenceposts around the big yard on the north (as we saw on Saturday at 1030) today there were 15 TURKEY VULTURES and zero Black Vulture, which I found very amusing as there were no doubts about ID.  The TVs were sunning themselves in various positions, facing toward or away from the sun, some with spread wings, others closed.  Turkey Vulture #15 arrived from the north as I watched.  Is there a carcass beyond the trees?  Was the Black Vulture still feeding?   By 4pm, the next time I could check, they had all left, which is not surprising because the sun was low no longer so attractive in that area.  This evening as I left work at 5pm it was still light, and none of the American Crows had yet returned to their roost site of the past several days, the treetops along Spencer Rd north and south of the intersection of Stone Quarry Rd.  I walk under them in the darkness on my way to work.  A possible reason there were no crows around as I began my walk home was a PEREGRINE FALCON which came winging overhead, circled once and disappeared over South Hill  After the Peregrine left, a single AMERICAN CROW flew past.  --Dave Nutter
