[cayugabirds-l] Pipits aplenty on Hile School Rd

2023-10-29 Thread anneb . clark
Without my binocs while walking the dog in rain—but suddenly the harvested and
manured field NE of my drive (147) erupted in pipits. Coming from old cornfield
to eat if this field, I clearly saw ca 200 slender, mostly cryptic, light
bellies and longish tails with white outer feathers coming up in quick flying
sub-flocks that then resettled farther west in the field. Sun flocks gave me a
way to count roughly.

May have been a few sparrows near field margins as well and definitely a small
flock of redwings next to the west hedgerow being strafed by what I assume was
a sharp shinned hawk. Not a lot larger than they and they did not leave the
area despite its swoops. Unfortunately they were a good distance away and, as
mentioned, no binocs (rain, dog on lead). So sharpie is my best
ID.

[cayugabirds-l] Pipits in Hanshaw fields

2023-10-25 Thread Marc Devokaitis
About an hour ago I parked at Freese Rd Community Gardens and walked along
the Monkey Run rim trail until it comes out on the back of some of
the Hanshaw Rd fields to the east of Freese Rd (at most 1/4 mile). Not far
from the treeline were around 30 well-camouflaged and very active AMERICAN
PIPITS foraging amid recently sown cover crop.

[cayugabirds-l] Pipits, lots of them,’Hile School rd

2021-03-16 Thread anneb . clark
Just put in eBird which didnt believe my estimated number of 80. I think
actually there were initially more 45 min earlier than my count- by- 10s at
1800 EDT. Unmistakable long legged sparrow streaked birds with flashing outer
tail feathers. It was hard to keep an eye on all the sub-flocks each time they
settled.

Anyway first I have seen this year. Last Friday there were still 4 horned larks
but none today.

[cayugabirds-l] Pipits @ Myers

2017-02-26 Thread Suan Yong
At least 14, possibly 25 pipits were at Myers, flew towards Salt Point. Very
windy. A couple were still on the salmon creek island with robins.
Also bluebird, kingfisher, flickers, many grackles at the FL marina.

[cayugabirds-l] Pipits @ Salt Pt + others; Ravens

2016-01-09 Thread Donna Lee Scott
I met Suan at Salt Point after his Pipit post below. He said there were 7
AMERICAN PIPITS according to his heat sensing device/screen, and that they are
very hard to see against the dull colored lake-bed rocks on the shore edge.
I later saw one on the north side near the point. Never found the others.
Then I saw 7 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS which landed near and on a small frozen pond on
the north shore lake bed of Salt Point. Neat to see a lovely bright male
Bluebird standing on the snow-covered ice!

Also saw N. CARDINAL, RED BELLIED WOODPECKER, 3 BLUE JAYS, 4 E. STARLINGS, 4 A.
CROWS, and several RING BILLED BULLS, along with a group of intrepid,
scope-lugging birders across Salmon Creek near the point of Myers Park.

Later on Asbury Road near the end of Collins Rd. I saw 2 COMMON RAVENS fooling
around way out in a large farm field. One was doing that amusing hopping,
following after the other as it walked away.

I posted some photos of today's pipits, including the infrared image, on
facebook:

If you can't see the IR image, I posted it here too:

I did eventually see all seven fly together a short distance.

[cayugabirds-l] pipits, Enfield

2013-11-01 Thread Dave Nutter
This afternoon as I returned from a taxi run to the western suburbs of Perry City I happened upon a flock of scores of AMERICAN PIPITS in the westernmost block of Aiken Rd in Enfield. Of course I noted what sort of field attracted them: newly cut hay on the first of November. --Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] Pipits

2011-05-03 Thread John and Fritzie Blizzard
Daughter, Becky I saw a flock of 20 or so AMERICAN PIPITS in a farm field on
Fitzpatrick Rd. between Union Springs Auburn yesterday.

Also saw both adult Bald Eagles sitting in trees at Mud Lock ... and both
adults at the Refuge near the Visitor's Center.

The Osprey is sitting on 3 eggs on the North Spring Pool platform along Rte.
89. High water has flooded some Canada goose nests maybe the Trumpeter nest.
Ponds are now lakes.

Becky, Kathy Strickland I truly appreciated the fantastic Harpy Eagle
presentation at the lab last night. Thanks to whomever arranged for it.
