[cayugabirds-l] Sharpie

2021-12-10 Thread Donna Lee Scott
When I was on my front porch yesterday, there was quite a squawking going on
with all the house sparrows and other usual feeder birds.
Then I saw a small hawk zoom by and land in the barberry bush right across from
me and then take off again after some birds!
A Sharp-shinned Hawk flew back & forth, very close to me, landing momentarily
in small trees while trying to catch a meal.
I don’t think it got a bird, but it was out of sight behind the big boxwood, so
I couldn’t see it after a bit.

It either did not see me, or was so desperate to catch a bird that it ignored
me standing on the porch.

[cayugabirds-l] Sharpie

2014-04-08 Thread Bill Mcaneny
Just had a SHARP_SHINNED HAWK fly in to a blue spruce behind the house.
Nothing happened, and then a Junco dashed out with the hawk in pursuit. They
made a fast loop around the tree and it looked like the junco was going to
make it. The hawk took a slightly different route, but both went out of
sight on the far side of the house. I am off to see which bird has a happy
ending.

[cayugabirds-l] sharpie again

2011-12-09 Thread Meena Haribal
Hi all,

Looks like there is a sharpie circling over, it is visible from between the
computer screen and the wall from window opening in my office. It is circling
and gaining height and thermal. This one was greyish, so I presume a male.
Now it has become invisible with naked eye and to binoculars.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Sharpie

2011-12-08 Thread Meena Haribal
I watch those starlings every day in this season while waiting for the bus.
They do it so late in the evening that it is hard to get them on the film. May
be should get a permit to go to the top of Vet Tower one of these days. I can
hear them while waiting for the bus.

Gary, any suggestion how one can get permit?

Terry. Stop and watch them for a while. They circle and circle and after quite
a long while they stream into a tower, what I presume is a chimney, in one
fell swoop. Like reverse smoke. Not at all the way Chimney Swifts enter.
Larry and I watched this several times last year. Fascinating.

Thanks

I've been watching starlings wheeling around in their "swarm" mode directly
over the Vet Tower right around 5pm each night as I head home. Really fantastic
sight. If you are driving down Tower Road in the direction of the Vet Tower you
can see them after you pass the Dairy Bar intersection.

[cayugabirds-l] Sharpie and TV

2011-01-17 Thread Meena Haribal
Today early morning I did see the TV again, lazily floating over plantations.
Today three times I have seen a Sharpie from my office window. I guess it is
the same bird spending time in the same locality. It just now flew over to
Mundy wildflower garden.
