[OSL | CCIE_Voice] URGENT REQUEST-[HELP W/POWER PROBLEM::3750 POE GETTING ERROR %ILPOWER-5-ILPOWER_POWER_DENY: }

2011-08-06 Thread Michael.Sears
My 3750 is having problems. First it had problems booting and now I'm getting
an error ** %ILPOWER-5-ILPOWER_POWER_DENY: Interface Gi2/0/8: inline power
denied **.

I looked this up in the output interpreter and this was the output I received:

** %ILPOWER-5-ILPOWER_POWER_DENY (x1):Interface [chars]:inline power denied

Explanation: This message means that the PoE request was denied because the
switch
does not have enough power left to support the request. [chars] is the
interface
number.

Recommended Action: No action is required. **

I showed the power on the 3750 and the results show that I have 389 WATTS used
and I don't have a single phone plugged in:

HQ-3750#show power inline

Module Available Used Remaining
(Watts)(Watts)(Watts)
-- - -
2 370.0 369.6 0.4

It would appear that all my power in the switch is used up and I don't even
have any phones plugged into it? Any input on this would be greatly
appreciated as to what is using up all my power in the switch?? Could this be
some kind of Code issue. I'm running **

You probably want to verify using the online power calc but the ps you have
really isn't designed for poe. Generally id put a minimum 750w ps in a poe
switch

Michael,

I guess I'm not using the switch I thought I was in my home lab. I have 2
phones plugged in and using 24w (as expected). The code version I'm running is
12.2(46)SE. Can you shoot over the full output of show power inline

As for your question about switch master status check out the following guide

This is not a power supply issue, if he did not have a PoE capable power
supply he would not even get a listing of the PoE power. Here is a sample
from a 3560 that is a 48 port model and is PoE

It has 370 watts to disperse to the ports. That is less than 10 per port in
my case but since say a 7962 might use 7 it should be enough to power for
about 48 of these device : )

Interesting, perhaps Michael had that or because the switch seemed to be a
part of a stack, 2/0/8 then it might be that. I know switches that were part
of a stack act in an unreliable manner out of the stack

So this is interestingI can duplicate Michael's scenario.

I have two phones plugged into my 3750. Here is the show power inline
 output:

 Module Available Used Remaining

 1 370.0 30.8 339.2
Interface Admin Oper Power Device Class Max

 Fa1/0/1 auto off0.0 n/a n/a 15.4
 Fa1/0/2 auto on 15.4IP Phone 7965 3 15.4
 Fa1/0/3 auto off0.0 n/a n/a 15.4

 Fa1/0/5 auto on 15.4IP Phone 7965 3 15.4
 omitted

Now I went in and statically defined and effectively disabled the power
 negotiation.

 int range f1/0/1 - 24
  power inline static max 15400

and the show power inline output

 Module Available Used Remaining
   (Watts) (Watts)(Watts)
 -- - -
 1 370.0 369.6 0.4
Interface Admin Oper Power Device Class Max
 (Watts)
 - -- -- --- --- -
 Fa1/0/1 static off15.4n/a n/a 15.4
 Fa1/0/2 static on 15.4IP Phone 7965 3 15.4
 Fa1/0/3 static off15.4n/a n/a 15.4
 Fa1/0/4 static off15.4n/a n/a 15.4
 Fa1/0/5 static on 15.4IP Phone 7965 3 15.4
 Fa1/0/6 static off15.4n/a n/a 15.4

Removing that command returned my show power inline output to 370/30.8 (as
 expected)

Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] URGENT REQUEST-[HELP W/POWER PROBLEM::3750 POE GETTING ERROR %ILPOWER-5-ILPOWER_POWER_DENY:

2011-08-06 Thread Kshitij Singhi
Hi Mike,

It appears as if the PSU on the switch is faulty. Have you tried connecting
a non-PoE device to see if that works fine? Or perhaps give power to the
phone via a power brick and see if it registers as expected.

If you don't have any device connected to the switch, then there should
definitely be power available for the phone. The phone is initially supplied
with 15.4 Watts post which CDP tapers down the actual Wattage used by the
phone.

Bryan - I wouldn't say that the scenario that Mike is facing has been
recreated. In Mike's case, if he plugs a phone in to the port, it does not
get PoE. However, via the CLI you have allocated a max of 15.4 Watts to the
port(s) in question and that effectively means that if a device requests for
more than 15.4 Watts, then it will be denied. However, if you plug a 7961/65
in, it should work fine on all ports that the command has been applied to.

Mike - I think this appears to be a faulty PSU provided there isn't any
command limiting power to the port(s) in question. (I have seen that the no
power inline or power inline never is placed on some of the ports that
are not being used and people forget about the command later on - this leads
to a scenario that is similar to the one you are facing, when they are
trying to plug a phone into an unused port)
