Re: [ccp4bb] teaching question: graphics for chromebook?

2018-05-24 Thread luis.fuentes-mont...@diamond.ac.uk
It worth commenting that Chromebooks are every time getting easier and easier
to install Linux natively, they are actually already running the Linux kernel,
they just have an oversimplified Desktop environment.

If you can convince your student to install Linux, he/she will not have any
issues that historically Linux had with drivers, and also will have more tools
available that as a Chomebook.

As an alternative option you might consider IcmJS which will run on Chromebook
as well as Windows and Mac. It is a free JavaScript/HTML5 3D molecular viewer
which does not require any plug-in or browser extension and runs inside any
modern web browser.

There is more information about IcmJS here:
http://www.molsoft.com/activeicmjs.html
You can see an example of IcmJS as a PDB viewer here:
http://www.molsoft.com/pdbv.html

Also, MolSoft's iMolview app (http://www.molsoft.com/iMolview.html) for Android
can also run on Chromebook.

Thanks,

Being on the ccp4bb I feel I should ask if ccp4mg isn't suitable for your
purposes?

Dear Phoebe,
For all x86 ones - I found using crouton + Xubuntu LTS on a chromebook
very good. Including 3D acceleration [1]. Provided the HDD has space
you can have complete workstation. Of course needs the students need
to enable developer environment.

Which model are you talking about? ARM based processors will not have
3D acceleration.
Any doubts ask me.

[ccp4bb] Global Phasing website down

2018-05-24 Thread Peter Keller

Dear all,

Global Phasing's web site http://www.globalphasing.com/ is unavailable, we
are currently investigating but don't have any estimate as to when it will
be restored.

Some of our mailing lists that we use to communicate with our users are also
out of action.

Mailing lists for user support (those that end
with "-deve...@globalphasing.com") are working, and should still be used for
any queries about our software or services.

The STASRANISO and Grade servers are working, as is everything in the
"globalphasing.org" domain.

Apologies to those of you who are not users of Global Phasing software or
services. If there are any questions arising from this, please send them to
us at Global Phasing directly rather than to the CCP4BB list.
