Re: SGI Indigo keyboard / mouse / converter wanted

2022-02-20 Thread Andrew Diller via cctalk
Indigo1 is not PS/2, even though the connector looks that way. You need to have
the "onxy" keyboard/mouse or get an adapter from Drakware. Plugging in a PS/2
device will harm the SGI and or the keyboard.
https://www.drakware.com/shop/p/indigousb

You can build your own but I don't have the details, perhaps Drak does and is
willing to share them.

Re: SGI Indigo keyboard / mouse / converter wanted

2022-02-20 Thread Andrew Diller via cctalk
There was a converter a few years ago that went from 'onyx' to PS/2. That seems
to have vanished from ebay. I have some and they say "CKCOMPUTERSYSTEMS" on
them - perhaps your friend can chase that down.

The Drak goes to USB which may be better or worse than the CK adapter depending
on your keyboard fetish.

Real SGI 'onyx' devices pop up on ebay every once and a while. Make sure they
are not SGI PS/2 (which Indigo2 and all later SGIs actually used) - the 'onyx'
style will have the mouse attachment to the keyboard itself (the computer just
has one DIN connector for m/k not 2 like actual PS/2 devices).

http://www.sgistuff.net/hardware/other/input.html

There are a very few SGI vendors around with parts.

http://www.mashek.com/SGIparts/Indigo.php

Lists some available. These may seem like high prices till you watch an ebay
listing go higher.

[cctalk] Re: SGI vs. Mac

2022-12-24 Thread Andrew Diller via cctalk
Elan is a class of graphics chips in a given (early) SGI. It's the top level of
the Express set.
http://archive.irixnet.org/sgistuff/hardware/graphics/express.html

I thought the end of SGI hinged on two things: banking on the Itanium and
giving up on MIPS, and their Graphics experts went off to found a company
called Nvidia... the rest was inevitable.

For anyone that still uses a SGI and has a later IRIX installed I've worked
with a team that has ported a whole slew of modern software over to IRIX to
make them fairly useable today. Later systems mostly - but quite a few people
love their Indys and are running what we built: SGUG-RSE (Silicon Graphics User
Group's RPM Software Env).

How to setup RSE:
https://forums.sgi.sh/index.php?threads/setup-the-official-sgug-repo-upgrade-openssh.660/

RSE sources:
https://github.com/sgidevnet/sgug-rse

It's fun if you are into SGI and want to run some stuff that is slightly
relevant.

I use my Fuel and my teal Indigo2 pretty regularly- there is a of course a
group of people who do CGI work on these old systems for the authentic feels
and I dabble in that and IRIX sysadmin- it's a refreshing change from Linux and
systemd lol.

[cctalk] Re: 2 sets of IRIX, 2 Indys and I1

2023-01-21 Thread Andrew Diller via cctalk
IRIX isn't node-locked or licensed. Just some versions of IRIX drop support for
old systems. Google will tell you exactly what you can install on what. Indys
can all take 6.5.22 (but will be slow). The MIPSpro C compilers were licensed
w/ flex but Google is also your friend for that.

Totally disc-less (uses Pi and network) IRIX install of last two versions which
support about 90% of SGI (and all Indys): https://github.com/unxmaal/booterizer

RSE - the RPM Software Env for IRIX 6.5.30 and .22 is avaiable and has
thousands of modern packages ported and ready to install via RPM and DNF via
http: https://github.com/sgidevnet/sgug-rse/wiki

Note: I worked on both of those projects and they are amazing if you have any
SGI with a MIPS 4400 or newer and Internet access! No reason to burn CDROMS or
not have some very cool tools and make IRIX useful again.

Fidonet is def. a thing. There is a New Zealand group- FSXnet - that I found
when researching how to actually _join_ a Fidonet network. Docs for this from
the pov of someone that has never done it are few. I.E. it seem very hard to
find direction to join into Fidonet unless you are already there.

https://fsxnet.nz/fsxnet/join

This was done because I am setting up a BBS on a Macintosh SE running System 6.
There is a modern BBS being written today (in C) called SubText BBS that can
connect up to Fidonet (I connected to FSX net after signing up and getting a
node assignment.). It's cool to get the network messages from all over the
globe on your local BBS.

https://jcs.org/subtext

My BBS is up: telnet to-> bbs.diller.org login as guest. It's running on a SE
w/ 4MB ram.

Setting this up and getting things going was a fun diversion and using a Mac SE
for it was a blast as well.

On Fidonet? Send me some mail: massive@21:3/178

[cctalk] Re: The MAC at 40

2024-01-24 Thread Andrew Diller via cctalk
I think now anyone that wants to look a bit more closely has a much better idea
and context about what caused the Birth of the Mac. That story of "stolen from
PARC" IMHO is just weak writing back when the Internet didn't have the info it
has today which gives full context over what was going on. And many people have
told a much more rich and (I hope) accurate telling of the story.

The Mac sure made an impact on me and I've never looked back or wanted to use
any other computing system (for my real computer) since then.
