seeing either of those in working condition would be neat (working in terms
of still booting to BASIC). I was surprised I didn't see one at VCF in
Dallas last year (but they did have a HP9830 and Tek4051, those were neat
to see and still working).. The Wang systems have some decent emulators,
but I don't recall emulators for the early Datapoints.-

There now  is a Datapoint 2200 emulator, see https://github.com/MattisLind/DP2200

Mattis is trying to add DP5500 support.

Be aware that it does not show the true Datapoint fonts.

Maybe something similar can be done for the old DP's? I understand for
authentic/historical perspective all original components is prefered, but
using a substitute PSU is reasonable for checking out the rest of the
system.

The DP2200 needs secondaries of 450V, 120V,40V, 25V, -25V, 12V, -12V 5V and
-5V. Yep, can be done, but.

What an amazing system those Datapoints were, for their time. The
chicken-farm story in the DP2200 book is really fun - these farmers being
savvy enough to code up what they needed, and the systems compact enough to
fit in the farms and using modems even to sync up data (pre-1975).

They were, and are, indeed nice little systems...really need to get mine up
again, also because I have a Diablo disk system for it. Must be extremely rare..

But, in extracting the data on those TTLs, it seems like a modern replica

On 13.11.22 07:13, Steve Lewis via cctalk wrote:

I've been looking for a video or image that shows what font the original
Datapoint 2200 used.

It's not shown in the manual. There is one vintage image with the office
lady and the DP2200 on the desk- but the font isn't very clear in that.

In any modern video about the DP2200, none of them seem to power it on --
which is certainly understandable. From what I've read, the power supply
of that system is prone to failure. Also, the system is hard-coded to load
from Tape 1 -- which means both the tape drive, and tape media, still needs
to be in good working order (which would be pretty rare after this time).

In "the" DP2200 book, it only briefly mentions that the original tape
software was developed "on an HP system" (without any elaboration that I
could tell on which HP system that was).

Nothing in the manual suggests the original DP2200 could "program itself"
(i.e. no built in machine code monitor -- those TTL chips had one strict
boot up sequence: load from tape 1). If there was a read error or no tape
available, I'm curious if any message showed on the CRT.

So, I was just wondering if there was any known pre-1973 Datapoint 2200's
that are still working? (and/or if any HD video of them powered on and
legible font can be seen) Or any other more current system that we know
for sure used the same font?

Thanks!
-Steve

Not only  is the powersupply prone to failure, it is also the most dangerous I
have ever seen, and I am hesitant on working it. Primary and secondary sides
not separated,  isolation between the two almost nonexistant, many primary
nodes exposed. Would never pass modern safety checks.

But here is a picture of my DP1100, a DP2200 derivative, while it was running a
memory selftest, for a short time in 2021, before the powersupply blew again :

https://forum.vcfed.org/index.php?threads/its-alive-my-datapoint-2200-1100.1222197/#post-1222197

While the DP2200 is hardcoded to start from tape, the DP1100, otherwise identical,
boots from a ROM. This ROM also contains a minimal machinecode monitor. I recovered
& disasembled the ROM and Gordon Peterson, from Datapoint, commented it out :
http://www.bitsavers.org/pdf/datapoint/1100/DisketteBootDisassemblyGEP2.txt

Note that there are multiple videoboard options : the later DP2200, my DP1100,
and the DP5500 share the same videoboard. This relies on a programmable
characterset. In the disassembly mentioned above above, starting at line 3660
you will see a load of gobldecook, these are actually fondsets to be loaded
into the machine.

The fontset has a very particular "look" to it. How much is due to
fontdefinition, and how much is due to the diddlescan, that I dont know. Diddlescan is
where they scan each character in full, before proceding to the next.

Note that a  ROM based bootboard for a DP2200 would be a trivial undertaking,
and only involve changing the cassette reader board for the ROM board.

You can do just that on my system. If you have a true 2200 with the dual

Look here to wat was available for this class of machines :

So, yes, Basic, RPG, Cobol ( for 5500 upwards), Databus, Datashare, Dataform
were available.

Programs development could be done standalone, even on a cassette-only system.

Keep in mind that Diablo 14" diskdrives were available for these system,
allowing for quite a comfortable environment. For early 70's standards of course...

My DP2200 does have a bootrom, allowing for booting from floppy, or some
simnple ad-hoc systems debugging. Look for the deocumented source code for this

That would fit right in with a key-tape scheme. Can you tell if the
capstan motor is a stepper?

I put up some more pics (Tapehead & capstan drive). It does not use stepper.

It seems it was made by US firm Sangamo, as is etched in some of the PCB's

In view of the head's condition I will not persue this further.

Not even sure if it is a computer tape drive or an instrument / data logger...

Thomas's floppydrive is currently on my bench : as we were unable to find the
rights parts I proceeded to 3D print them.
A sleeve for the existing 60 Hz pulley was made from PLA, a replacement belt was printed
using "Ninjaflex".

The resulting combination is already running for several hours, the belt is as
flexible as the original and shows no signs of wear yet.

( This particular drive has the distinction of using a true rubber belt, not
the reinforced textile band you normally see )

This ninjaflex material could potentially be very useful in producing
capstans
Experiments will follow as soon as time permits !

Pascal Microengine disks images available.

2019-01-02 Thread jos via cctalk

Finally got around to imaging the +/- 80 floppies that came with my ACI-90
Pascal Microengine system.

Disks of general interest can be downloaded on
ftp://ftp.dreesen.ch/WD9000/MicroEngine.zip

These are mostly variants of the OS and a set of system selftests.

Image SYSTEM/OS_F0_SingleDensity.IMD might be of particular interest as that
is a single-density OS-disk, might be needed for those with very early systems.
All others images are for double-density systems.

Sorry for the lack of documentation, I don have anymore than this, and have yet
to check the contents...

As a sidenote, all BASF disks were unproblematic, unlike the ControlData and
noname parts that were also in the mix.

Datic 2000 / Ampex 844 Documentation ?

Ran into an early CP/M system today, from german company Datic.
It is a single-user 8080 system, featuring a delay-line based CRT output and an
Ampex 844 fixed platter / removable 14" cartridge driver.

Is this simply a Diablo 44 equivalent, as I suspect, or is this a true
standalone development from Ampex ?

First time I have seen a 14" drive on a CP/M system

No, it is just a 8MHz MC68K, 2 PALs to somehow kludge the 68K to the STD bus, and a 2732

Tektronix 405 diagnostic Rom Pack copies available.

2018-04-15 Thread jos via cctalk

As mentioned before , i made a functional copy of the Tektronix 4052 Diagnostic
Rom Pack .

PCB's are back, units do work ( minus a small issue with the wrong orientation
of the LED's )

Go to

ftp://ftp.dreesen.ch/TEK_DRP

and find my dokumentation DiagPack_Manual.pdf , decide if this is what you
want, and order ( or not...)

Also please read the original TEK doku TEK4052_4054_Diagnostic_Rom_Pack.pdf in
order to understand what this unit can and cannot do.

Prices, in short : PCB only 20 Euro/25 USD, populated and tested 60/75, add
20/25 for a fitting 3D printed casing.

And do feel free to construct your own with the data from my FTP site.

This pack should also work on the 4054, but since I do not have such a machine
this feature is untested.

Jos, now wondering whether I will ever sell the 20 PCB's I have...

There are a number of us over and the vcfed forum, someone just brought his
4052 back to live after countless years.

I myself restored my 4052 a couple of months ago, a second one needs
powersupply checkout and has an as yet undetermined problem in the analog board.

I am in the process of recreating the 4052/4054 diagnostic pack.
Give a shout if you need one, less than 7 parties at the moment.

I'd therefore be interested in the source code for the 3D printed cartridge
case.
This will need updates to accomodate the LED and switches.

I myself would be interested in obtaining, or recreating, a suitable long term
storage option for the 4052, i.e. floppy or even SD card.

Then again, TekBasic is really bloody awful, maybe we should spend time on
brining somre proper software top the system.

Cannot see any marking as to who the druive supplier is, it might have been

There are a few people out there struggeling with their 4052's :

On ftp.dreesen.ch/FTP/TEK4052 they will find description, schematic, pictures
and romdumps for the Diagnostic ROM pack, as used by the TEK engineers in the

Also listed are the the TEK-supplied CRC's for all ROMS in the 4052/54 systems.

No special components used, so nothing to stop you building your own Diagnostic

Tek4052 V5 ROMdumps available

2017-11-06 Thread jos via cctalk

For the upcoming VCFe in Zurich / Switzerland (18/19 Nov ) I repaired my
TEK4052, which is now up and running ( no usable tapes yet...)

I took the opportunity to read all the programmable devices from the machine,
you find these at ftp.dreesen.ch/ftp/TEK4052

They are release V5 for the ALU-(microcode), and release V5.1 for the
MAS-(firmware) board.
They do not use patch-pla's, I believe them to be the latest revision for the
4052.
These are for the 4052, not the 4052A which is a different beast. (differnt IO
and MAS board, different microcode and firmware )

As a reference, the romdump's at Al's site are for the 4052A, the romdumps at
the Stuttgart museum site are the earlier release V4.x for the 4052

Take note : a 4052 does not boot without the tapedrive attached...

I also dumped the contents of both 2716's onboard the diagnostic rom pack. (
also containg a 6810 )

I have (untested) spare boards if anyone in the neighboorhood wants to try some
boardswapping...
