Problem with cdrecord-ProDVD

Hi all,

I noticed that -tao mode is no longer working on my hardware since

Everything worked fine with a previous version. Here is my system:

I think the burner doesn't handle that media properly. AFAICT the Sony
510 isn't so hot when it comes to compatibility with a lot of different
 media.

The SONY DRU-530A is quite bad as well. We had much better luck with
the SONY DRU-500A. Too bad we can't buy those any more.

Hi,
I updated the firmware to 1.1a (from 1.0d). Same problem.
I checked some older DVDs I wrote and there are a couple of Sankey DVD-R
that give the same media info, but don't show this error.
Tried with older dvd+rw-tools which I used at that time, same error.

One thing left to do : try with WindowsXP and see if I get the same
problem.

 Hi group,

Using either cdrecord or cdrdao under 2.4.27 or 2.6.8 will not achieve
burning speeds of 24x (as promised). The specs say my drive (Toshiba
SD-R2312) can burn 24x, the -prcap option says it can burn 24x, cdrecord
says it will burn 24x, but the achieved speed is about 8.2x and it
varies a bit. I tried the driveropts=forcespeed option, but that doesn't
work. DMA is being used (almost no CPU load) and the medium is supposed
to be able to handle 52x. Any idea what can be wrong with my drive
and/or cdrecord? BTW: the drive is brand new, just replaced another
(broken) drive which also couldn't burn at speeds higher dan 8x, but was
another brand and model and was supposed to be able to burn 24x as well.
 Something with linux/cdrecord/my computer?

If you don't give information, you cannot expect help :-(

This is formally impossible state, blank DVD-RW in Sequential mode
with lead-out at less than 4.7GB...
It's possible that the media are faulty. cdrecord-pro and Nero don't
like them much either. But I have the same problem with normal DVD-R's
that cdrecord-pro and Nero write perfectly fine.

Well, I don't have any good answer to this. Error code reads as CANNOT
READ MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT (see
http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/keys.txt) Those reports I've
got from other TSSTcorp users are all about DVD+R and reported legacy
lead-out values were perfectly sane... Keep in mind that it's not
necessarily media which is faulty, but this particular media brand is
poorly supported by your unit [newly upgraded] firmware. So I still
stand by my original advice to test several media brands.

As for why does growisofs fail, but not others. Well, note that unlike
other applications growisofs defaults to Incremental Sequential
recording mode, which might be the explanation. I mean it might have
worked in DAO mode. But examine
http://lists.debian.org/cdwrite/2004/09/msg00062.html before you try to
apply DAO procedure to this media... A.

Re: growisofs can't handle write speed

2004-11-02 Thread Andy Polyakov
I've got a problem with dvd+rw-tools (version 5.21.4.10.8-1)
on amd64, gcc3-4:
If I try to write an 8x DVD-R (Verbatim), then the writer
(LG GSA-4082B, firmware A208) starts with 4x as expected,
but later it drops to some arbitrary value (about 2x).
After a while it goes up to 4x again, but it never reaches
the promissed 8x.
Keep in mind that if system for whatever reason can not maitain data
flow at required rate, unit will have to take idle revolutions and
depending on firmware implementation performance loss can be as abrupt
as you describe.

Below you can find a sample session.
Writing the old Verbatim DVD-R 4x medias was never a problem.
If I use growisofs -speed=4 then there is no problem with
the 8x medias, either (except for the lost performance).
Given the speed descriptors presented below you should try -speed=1 to
tell you unit to limit recording velocity at 4x for 8x media...

It's known problem which growisofs (it interprets lowest speed reported
by unit firmware as 1x and your unit offers only 4x and 8x for this
media), which will be fixed in upcoming release. A.

Re: problems with growisoft

2004-11-02 Thread Andy Polyakov
Now I try to burn a subsequent session in incremental mode:
#growisofs -M /dev/hdd -root backup-2004-10-22-10:43 -old-root
backup-2004-10-22-10:36 -quiet -R -D -exclude-list /tmp/backup.exclude
-graft-points home/nason=home/nason
output:
Executing 'mkisofs -C 16,407824 -M /dev/fd/3 -root
backup-2004-10-22-10:43 -old-root backup-2004-10-22-10:36 -quiet -R -D
-exclude-list /tmp/backup.exclude -graft-points home/nason=home/nason |
builtin_dd of=/dev/hdd obs=32k seek=25489'
Rock Ridge signatures found
At this point the dvd burner lights up for a while then stops.
Nothing happens. Using top I can see that mkisofs is using
all the cpu available. I have to kill the process.
If I do the same with a small test directory, the same procedure
works. With my home directory (800Mb) it hangs.
I compiled mkisofs with a debug option, and ran under the debugger
the command (is this right? I took it from the growisofs output,
substituting /dev/fd/3 with /dev/hdd ):
#mkisofs -C 16,407824 -M /dev/hdd -root backup-2004-10-22-10:43
-old-root backup-2004-10-22-10:36 -quiet -R -D -exclude-list
/tmp/backup.exclude -graft-points home/nason=home/nason
The program runs an infinite loop in multi.c:545,
   while (len = 4) {
It's pure mkisofs problem. In other words it has anything to do whether
or not you use ide-scsi, what is your kernel version nor which brand is
your recorder unit. It has everything to do with your home directory
structure. You can try narrow the problem by temporarily moving
subdirectories out of your home directory to identify which one causes
trouble, then step down that directory and apply same procedure
(temporarily move out subdirs elsewhere on same device)... A.

Re: tar, backup, growisofs, file names

2004-11-02 Thread Andy Polyakov
thank you very much for this hint, it was very helpful!
a little addition to your meaning about the interoperatibily of the restore-mechanism:
you wrote:
Restore is performed with
'cat /cdrom/full.tar.bz2* | bunzip2 -c | tar xf -'
, which is perfectly interoperable among all Unices
including deficient Linux

it is not absolute interoperable, because IRIX (tested on v6.5) interchanges the sequence of the splits, so that it one have to take care about that!
Well, the suggested command relies on ability of your *shell* to sort
the list of files. So it's eiher that your shell is uncapable of sorting
(broken shell or broken locale?) or IRIX mangles Rock-ridge names in
unsortable manner. In latter case you should consider splitting to files
with simpler if any extension, e.g. '| split -b 2095104 -
/some/place/fill.'. A.

Re: Strange multisession DVD+R behaviour after closing the disc

2004-11-02 Thread Andy Polyakov
I have written a multisession data DVD+R with Nero Burning ROM 6.3. Then I
haven't added any more session and I have closed the disc with Pinnacle
Instant CD/DVD 8 OEM. The content of this disc is accessible without any
problem under Windows 2000. Under Linux, when I try to mount the disc with
'mount /dev/writer /mnt/writer/', I get this error:

mount: block device /dev/writer is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/writer,
or too many mounted file systems
I (obviously) obtain the same error when i try to use it in my dvd-rom.
The strangest thing is that I can mount (and then access as usual) this disc
with 'mount -oloop /dev/writer /mnt/writer'
Have you got any idea about this behaviour?
Well, it all depends on what does Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD 8 OEM do
when you instruct it to close the disc. And I assume nobody knows what
does it do:-) I can only say that in order to ensure maximum
compatibility with DVD-ROM units *and* to keep media mountable under
Linux you have to copy volume descriptor from previous (first in your
case) and pad the last session till the outer edge. That's essentially
what 'growisofs -M /dev/dvd=/dev/zero' does.

Is it possible to make the disc
'normally' (without '-oloop') mountable again?
The disc is in complete state, there is nothing you can do, but to
remaster new one. -oloop works presumably because by specifying it you
effectively bypass multi-sessioning code in kernel. -osession=1 should
do the trick as well...

Note essentially bogus value in the last Track Size. I would *guess*
that Pinnacly simply issues Finalize disk command to recorder, without
copying volume descriptor or padding the last session. Apparenly Windows
is OK with this... A.
