Long term archiving - which brand of CDROM do you recommend?
Hi, can anybody please give me some recommendations for long term archiving of data. Which brands are known to be usable for this? I do have cdrtools-3.01_alpha06 installed here (Gentoo) and I thought that Gentoo selected your mkisofs. Blindly doing 'man mkisofs' showed this 'alpha note' BUT a second look revealed that the mkisofs man page is a 'genisoimage' man page effectively. I now have to check where this comes from. Q: state of the art in burning a BD
Hi, since Christmas I have a blu-ray writer. What is the state-of-the-art in generating a BD especially when it comes to generating files of size greater than 4 Gb? Many thanks for some hints, Helmut. P.S. Nero-linux writes an UDF system which can be mounted by Linux. mkisofs says it has only UDF support in alpha state. -- Helmut Jarausch Lehrstuhl fuer Numerische Mathematik RWTH - Aachen University D 52056 Aachen, Germany -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to cdwrite-requ...@other.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Blu-Ray GUI burning tool
Hi, which (GUI) tool do you use for burning Blu-Ray-disks? Since I don't use KDE nor GNOME, I'd prefer something like TkDVD or the good old xcdroast. What has to fixed for these tools to enable them burning a Blu-Ray disk? Is it just the missing capacities which are not listed? cdrskin + k3b doesn't work SOMETIMES
Hi, I'm puzzled. I have configured k3b to use cdrskin (libburn-0.7.0) On one of identical machines - at least, I think so - this works just fine, but on some machines it doesn't work. When I do it 'by hand', e.g. mkisofs -R -J -iso-level 4 -pad -o OUTPUT.iso SOME_DIR cdrskin -v dev=/dev/sr0 speed=52 fs=50m padsize=300k OUTPUT.iso it works! On 1 Mar, Thomas Schmitt wrote: > Hi, > > Joerg Schilling wrote: . >> people in most cases solve their problems by writing in RAW mode >> or by killing hald. > > If raw mode prevents hald from disturbing a > burn run then this is an undocumented feature. Just one more comment (Attn: I don't know anything about the techniques of recording on a CD/DVD) As Joerg suggested in private mail, I tried using cdrecord after I had stopped hald. So on my system even without hald running cdrecord refused to write even the first sector. Switching to -raw96r mode (on a CD) did succeed but readcd -c2scan failed. Joerg said that my drive (LG GH22NS30 SATA) does not support c2 scanning. But then I wonder why it didn't get errors for all sectors (just many). I tried PLATINUM and VERBATIM media. This seems to be connected to this burner (and its predecessor LG GH20NS15) I have two PC (both AMD 64 running a recent Linux system with an 2.6.26 or 2.6.28 kernel) Both show this problem (with cdrecord only). I don't think it has to do with this recent Linux kernels since on two 32bit machines, running 2.6.26/8, as well, I have no problems though with an older (LG) burner. I managed to burn the CD with cdrskin, I mounted that CD and compared to the source directory. And the data was OK. I tried to "verify" that same CD with readcd (c2scan) and it failed with many sectors. cdrecord even failed to burn a DVD on those machines, while growisofs succeeded. NOTE, this is just the short history, no rating ! Thomas suggested to use CDCK which validated both the CD and the DVD. But unfortunately that checks timings only and therefore is only an indirect measure of quality. I wished there a were a tool which could show "near failures" on a CD and on a DVD, since I use my burner for backup purposes only. And I want to be able to access my data even several years in the future (e.g. digital photographs) Thanks for all your help and I explicitly include Joerg here, as well. I have been using cdrtools for many years now and it had worked and is working flawlessly except on this new hardware. is my drive defect - request for comments
Hi, I have a brand new drive (LG GH22NS30) and I'm encountering problems with cdrecord. E.g. I get cdrecord: Input/output error. write_g1: scsi sendcmd: no error CDB: 2A 00 FF FF FF 6A 00 00 1F 00 status: 0x2 (CHECK CONDITION) Sense Bytes: 70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0A 2A 00 00 80 30 05 00 00 Sense Key: 0x5 Illegal Request, Segment 0 Sense Code: 0x30 Qual 0x05 (cannot write medium - incompatible format) Fru 0x0 Sense flags: Blk 0 (not valid) Since this occurs even with a Verbatim medium, Jörg has been so kind to help me, and suggested the -raw96r format. This did succeed but when testing this CD afterwards with readcd or xorriso, it showed a lot of errors. Then using cdrskin with a medium of the same packet (Verbatim) succeeded and in addition xorriso should good results. Now, how can I find out if my drive is OK. It's not too late to exchange it for free. Has someone else had bad experience with that drive. I had good experience with earlier LG drives. (And yes, I'm working on Linux and there is hald running, but the nearly broken medium was written after hald was stopped.) I didn't believe it works but I've just tried with 2.6.11 and it works. With sudo or even better super one can fine tune who is able to execute which command. cdrecord on linux 2.6.x x > 2.6.8
Hi, since Linus's changes to the 2.6.8.1 kernel cdrecord doesn't work anymore when used by a non-root user even if its permissions are set SUID root. Does anybody know about patches to cdrecord and/or the kernel source to make this possible again? hidden file on an iso-image ?
Hi, I have an ISO image of 300 Mb which is said to contain software for Linux and for Windows. When I burn it onto a CD and mount it or when I mount it directly as loop device, I can only see the Linux part ( du -sm shows 144 Mb only). When I look at it under Windows I can only see the Windows part. Is there any means to access everything under Linux? And how can I create such an image? how to test DMA
Hi, this might be a bit offtopic but I appreciate any help. I have quite a new Plextor 48/24/48a CD recorder which hangs with Linux when DMA is used. It might be that there is a hardware problem w.r.t. my motherboard with a VIA chipset (3 years old) To verify that it is a hardware (and not a Linux kernel) problem I would like to test the drive under Win2k. Does anybody know how to check if the drive is using DMA under Win2k ? Many thanks for a hint, Helmut Jarausch Lehrstuhl fuer Numerische Mathematik RWTH - Aachen University D 52056 Aachen, Germany

Plextor DMA problem on Linux
Hi, I've a puzzling problem and hope someone's experience can help me. I have quite a recent Plextor 48/24/48 burner attached to my Linux system (currently 2.4.23-rc2) This drive has been running initially with my kernel which enables DMA by default. Now I cannot use the drive anymore under such a kernel. readcd dev=0,1,0 -f /dev/null works but that's special cased since readcd dev=0,1,0 -f - | cat >/dev/null DOESN'T work and even a normal 'mount' doesn't work. Always, I see a DMA timeout error on kern.log. I've tried various things like the boot parameters acpi=off and I've connected the drive to the other cable of my VIA vt82c686a onboard controller. Nothing help. Then I regenerated the kernel with the option 'DMA for disks only' and now I have no problems with the drive except a simple readcd now produces a system load of more than 90% (on an otherwise idle system) and the read speed drops to 4250 kb/s instead of 7056 kb/s as reported by readcd initially. Is my drive defect now (just the DMA logic) ? This occurred before and after upgrading the drive's BIOS to the most recent version. Or is it a Linux problem, but that's hard to believe since even an older kernel which has run fine with this drive doesn't run anymore with this drive. Any ideas and comments are more than welcome, Helmut Jarausch Lehrstuhl fuer Numerische Mathematik RWTH - Aachen University D 52056 Aachen, Germany

cdrtools-2.01a19 - strange errors
Hi, I have a seldomly used PlexWriter 24/10/40A . Using cdrtools-2.01a19 and different media I always get strange errors: The cd is written without any error messages. But comparing it to the orignal I get mismatches always at a bytes with offset n*2048 where n is integer. Has anybody any idea? (Previously, at least with previous versions of cdrtools this drive worked OK) Many thanks for a hint, Helmut Jarausch Lehrstuhl fuer Numerische Mathematik RWTH - Aachen University D 52056 Aachen, Germany

mkisofs stream-file-name
Hi, with the recent, nice 'shunt' package by Paul Serice to create multiple CD backups there is now need for the -stream-file-name parameter which is not implemented yet. Unless I've missed something it looks as if it's trivial to implement. Just one question, how many digits my the version number have? Thanks for a comment, Helmut Jarausch Lehrstuhl fuer Numerische Mathematik RWTH - Aachen University D 52056 Aachen, Germany
