I went through man mkisofs(8) and came to following conclusion.

If the original mode of directories and files are;
directory=0664
file=0664
owner and group=satimis:satimis

To preserve the original state after burning, the command line will be;

# mkisofs -o cd.iso -r -uid satimis -gid satimis -dir-mode 0664
-file-mode 0664 -new-dir-mode 0664 /path/to/data

If I'm wrong please correct me.

I'm not clear of -z option, what does it mean "transparently compressed
file" and "the resulting disks are only transparently readable'?

TIA

About RockRidge

2006-01-23 Thread Stephen Liu
Hi folks,

About RockRidge
==

I have been searching around on "man mkzftree", "man mkisofs", etc.
including googling around for examples in applying -ZF options to
compress the directories and files, to create ISO image and to burn as
well as to decompress the directories and files. But I could not find
them. Could you please shed me some light. Pointers would be
appreciated.

My purpose using RockRidge is retaining oringal ownership and
permission of data to solve following problem;

I burnt /home/ of a FC3 box on CDs. /home/ was on its own partition.
Then running LFS LiveCD I copied the CDs on a partition of a new HD
which has 6 partitions. I'm prepared to build LFS-->BLFS on the new HD
applying LFS LiveCD as host. Later I discovered all data after
transferred from the CDs onto the partitions became "read only" and
permission changed from User to Root. Now I need to reinstate their
original state, i.e. Write/Read, User, etc. Either I have to do it
manually or to re-burn the data from /home/ of the FC3 box onto the
CDs.

Could you folks on the List please shed me some light. TIA

You are correct. I just use CDRW as a big floppy disk, with DirectCD as
editing software in past. It is quite convenient only with drag and drop
opertaion. The CDRW can read both in M$Win98 and Linux (of course the
kernel has to be recompiled). But I can't write CDRW in UDF format on Linux
for such a reason I keep both OS. (Write is already labelled dangerous on
Linux). At the present moment I can't do anything on Linux.

What I am looking for is a solution for cross reading of the CDRW between
DirectCD and Nero. Maybe I have to looking for whether there are postings
on Adaptec and Nero websites

Anyhow I am very appreciated for your time and effort in replying my
posting. Thanks

Re: How to read CD RW created with DirectCD in Nero

2000-11-24 Thread Stephen Liu

Hi Mike,

Thanks again for your further advice.

I have no problem reading CDRW under Linux after recompiling the kernel
which I did several months ago but I CAN'T WRITE CDRW under Linux. For such
a reason I have to keep 2 (two) OS, Linux and M$Win98, using the latter for
writing CDRW with Adapter DirectCD.

The difficult story began when I recently purchase a new CDWriter. It does
not support DirectCD but only running Nero therefore I am compelled to
maintain 3 machines with 3 CDWriters, one on M$Win98 with DirectCD, another
on M$Win98 with Nero and another on Linux with CDRoast. The CDRW created
with DirectCD could not be read on the machine running Nero and vice versa
because of different format.

So I am now looking for a solution with a hope from the list because I have
a stock CDRW having data recorded with DirectCD. What I expect is a
solution for cross reading of CDRW created between DirectCD and Nero
respectively

Thanks

B.R.
Stephen

How to read CD RW created with DirectCD in Nero

2000-11-24 Thread Stephen Liu

Hi Eduardo,

Thanks for your advice.

On RH6.2 I have no problem reading files in CDRW edited with DirectCD
running on M$Win98 but I can't read files edited with Nero running in
M$Win98. It is because RH6.2 can't edit CDRW therefore I have to keep
working in M$Win98 for editing CDRW. Adding to that I have 2 CDWriters of
different brand both running in M$Win98 and one of them, a new one, can only
run Nero. However I have stock of CDRWs storing files edited with DirectCD.
To change all CDRWs in the same format shall take me lengthy time to
complete. It is quite painful to me keeping 3 machines and 3 CDWriters, 2
running in M$Win98 and 1 on Linux. If there is no immediate solution to
edit CDRW on Linux, I don't mind keeping 3 machines working on different OS
but I am looking for a solution for cross reading and editing files in CDRW
with DirectCD and Nero respectively.

Can anybody throw me some light. Thanks in advance.

Direct CD is for handling files. It is a wonderful tool, making a CDRW as a
Hard drive, copying, moving, deleting data files at your wish. I have been
using it for long time without problem. It reads UDF files.

Hi All People,

Is there a easy way in Xcdroast to copy and delete files to/from a CDRW disc
by drag and drop method similar to Adaptec Direct CD in M$Windoz.
Alternatively is there a similar software for Linux available.

Thanks in advance.

Command_Sytax used to install BurnIT

2000-07-31 Thread Stephen Liu

Hi all people,

What will be the correct Command/Syntax to install BurnIT-1.0.6 on RH6.2.

The Install instruction is too simple and the 'help' manual is not so clear.
Having made following trial without success:

Have BurnIT-1.0.6 tar.gz tarball download from Internet and stored under
/usr/src/
untar (without problem)

cd /usr/src/BurnIT-1.0.6
# install -D
install: too few arguments
Try `install --help' for more information.

# ./install -D
bash: ./install: No such file or directory

# install -D /usr/local/BurnIT
install: too few arguments
Try `install --help' for more information.

# install -dD
install: too few arguments
Try `install --help' for more information.

# ./install -dD /usr/local/BurnIT
bash: ./install: No such file or directory

# install -d /usr/local/BurnIT
(an empty directory created)

# ./install -D /usr/local/BurnIT
bash: ./install: No such file or directory

# install /usr/src/BurnIT-1.0.6 /usr/local/BurnIT
install: `/usr/src/BurnIT-1.0.6' is a directory

# install -dD /usr/src/BurnIT-1.0.6/cdrecord-1.6.1/ /usr/local/BurnIT
no response only an empty directory /usr/local/BurnIT was created
(there is a subdirectory cdrecord-1.6.1 inside)

Kindly advise. Thanks in advance.

How to install samke and xcdrecod on RH 6.2

2000-07-31 Thread Stephen Liu

Hi all people,

Have encountered following problem in installing xcdrecord.

Have both
smake-1.2a08.tar.gz

and
cdrecord-1.8.1.tar.gz download and stored under /usr/src/
(from ftp://ftp.fokus.gmd.de/pub/unix/makefiles/makefiles-*)
(ftp://ftp.fokus.gmd.de/pub/unix/makefiles/bin/* could not find the tarball
only following 3 files there:

smake-i386-sunos5*
smake-i586-linux*
smake-sparc-sunos5*

having all of them download but don't know how to use them)

Untar both of them without problem. However the "INSTALL" manual of
smake-1.2 looks like that one in cdrecord-1.8.1

-- under the source directory /usr/src/smake-1.2
# make(went through without problem)
# make install(not advised in INSTALL manual)
(no response)

Cant' install the smake-1.2

-- under the source directory of /usr/src/cdrecord-1.8.1
# make
(went through without problem)

# smake install
bash: smake: command not found

(Remark: also tried "make all" but the result was the same)

Kindly advise how to proceed. Thanks in advance.
