2006-02-06 Thread Helmut Jarausch
Hi,

does anybody know howto write more than 1 session onto a DVD with
cdrecord-ProDVD.
(I know it's possible with growisofs)

Many thanks for a hint

cdrecord-ProDVD 2.01.01a01 Linux binary has expired!

2006-01-08 Thread Klaus Elmquist Nielsen

Hi Jörg,

This mail is mostly for you as you are the only one who can solve the
problem.

The most recent cdrecord-ProDVD version is an alpha binary and is more
than one year old. Hence it has expired now! That this is the case can
be seen from berlios ftp server listing:
   -rwxrwxr-x 1 ftp ftp376924 Jan 5 2005
cdrecord-prodvd-2.01.01-i686-pc-linux-gnu

I did notice that the license/binary timeout shows itself in a little
cryptic way, namely as a long wait followed by a faio_wait_on_buffer
for writer timed out error message and an Alarm Clock abort.

I know this behaviour is documented in
ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/ProDVD/README but it would be really
appreciated (by me at least) if a future version of cdrecord-ProDVD did
produce a clear error message in case of license problems.

Better yet, do away with the license checks! ;-)

Cheers,
Klaus

2005 October 22, cdrecord-ProDVD key expired

2005-10-22 Thread scdbackup
Hi,

it's 2005 Oct 22 21:27:16 and my copy of cdrecord-ProDVD went
on strike (Alarm clock).

I read in ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/ProDVD/README :
As I am not sure if people will follow my licensing rules, so these
keys are time limited and will expire on 2005 Oct 22 18:53:20
I will continue to make private/educational/research use free,
but it may be that you need to request your private key for free
after 2005 Oct 22 18:53:20.

and in ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/ProDVD/cdrecord-wrapper.sh :
# Key Expires --- 2005 Oct 22 18:53:20

I hereby request a license key for free for private/research use.
If there is already a new license key uploaded then its URL would
be highly appreciated.

Have a nice day :)

Re: Cdrecord-ProDVD, burning DVD+RW fails

2005-09-09 Thread F. Kappen
Hi all,

after numerous trials and studying the READMEs and mailing-lists
concerning cdrecord-prodvd I haven't succeeded burning my DVDs with
cdrecord-prodvd . So I switched to growisofs. growisofs is
relatively simple and has not such a rich flavour of features like
cdrecord-prodvd has, but it works, serves my needs and I am
completely satisfied.

Cdrecord-ProDVD, burning DVD+RW fails

2005-09-05 Thread F. Kappen
Hi all,

I use a notebook running Debian-woody (kernel 2.4.26). Attached to it
via USB is an external DVD writer (LG, GSA-5163D) . DVD+RWs and CDs can
be mounted and read, but writing doesn't work. The software I use for

Sorry for the late reply.

I can't mount the dvd on my dvdrw drive.

On the other hand I can mount it my dvdr-rom drive. The command
  find . -type f -print0 | xargs -0 md5sum | grep FAIL
does not find problem, but I get I/O errors in syslog:

And now the drive seems to be stuck. Even a plain 'ls' hangs. I guess that
I'll have to reboot soon.

Anyway, I'll trash the faulty dvds.

Thanks for your help.

The only thing which comes to mind on that is that the directory
structure might still be in memory. Seems unlikely, but there's no
reason why it should work only until eject. If you force a read of all
files, like an md5sum or such, are they all readable?

The other thing which comes to mind is that the burner may still have
certain media parameters cached. This is flushed on eject, when the disk
is inserted again the drive needs to re-acquire.

I can only come to one of these 3 conclusions: 1) the drive is faulty.
2) The media is faulty to start with, and is certainly faulty now. 3)
The drive is unable to burn that particular media correctly, but it's
close to borderline (otherwise there would be a total failure).

In either of these cases the burnt disk is a coaster and not suitable as
backup.

Whenever there is read trouble and you're unsuere whether it's to do
with the filesystem, *always* disregard the filesystem and read with dd
directly from the device, like dd bs=2k if=/dev/dvdrecorder
of=/dev/null. You're allowed *one* I/O error at the very end of the
recording. Any more, and either or both drive and disk are faulty. There
is basically no leeway for other options here if you care about your
data.

expired cdrecord-ProDVD builds for HP-UX

2005-05-13 Thread Greg Wooledge
One of my coworkers recently noticed the infamous Alarm clock error
from cdrecord-ProDVD on our HP-UX workstations. She's been using
cdrecord-ProDVD 2.01a27 which is the newest version available on the
berlios FTP site for HP-UX. Apparently, this alpha release is expired,
and there is no 2.01 release to take its place for HP-UX yet. I advised
her to change the symbolic link to point to the 2.0 version instead.

Is Joerg planning to release newer versions of cdrecord-ProDVD for
HP-UX 10.20, or are we stuck with 2.0 forever?

It's not a license key issue. I checked that first, and we've got the
key from February 2005.

The alpha releases have built-in expiration dates, and they will simply
stop working after a time regardless of how recent the key is.

Wonder if Joerg and/or Andy will comment on this? Like using get_performance

Maybe a link to RTFM? :)

Plextor PX-712, Fw 1.06
 - reports broken lists on *both* of those commands when 4x DVD-RW media
is mounted (both lists say 4x, 2x, 1x, but set_streaming with 1x speed
fails)
 - when CD media is mounted, the maximum speed returned using get_performance
(write_descriptors) is the speed recommended by PowerREC, even when it is
disabled
Plextor PX-716, Fw 1.04
 - when higher speed DVD+R media is mounted, mode_sense erroneously reports
2.4x along with the other (correct) speeds reported by get_performance
LG 4120B/4163B
 - The applied write speed cannot be verified using mode_sense page 2A,
unless it is 4x or the maximum speed the media is supported at
The only way would be to
- retrieve both lists
- check if one is nonsense (like listing CD write speeds when DVD media
is mounted, that's what NEC is doing)
- discard the nonsense list, if there is any
- try to set all speeds which are left and check if the speed was
accepted by the drive, unless the drive is unable to report the current
speed setting (like LG). Don't ask me how to do that automatically,
  I don't know (yet).

NEC ND-3520A - Speed issues in cdrecord-prodvd and growisofs

2005-03-16 Thread Rodney Gordon II
Hi all,

I recently picked up a NEC ND-3520A and I am having speed problems with this
drive under linux. A quick just to make sure test in WinXP shows that these
errors are indeed specific to cdrecord-prodvd and growisofs.

The media I am using MID is PRODISC/R03 and I can burn this media perfectly
in WinXP using Nero at 4/6/8/12x. Under linux, however, I see a few different
things:

Regarding cdrecord-prodvd, this drive shows up as only being able to write at
6x max. I am using the latest release of this software, and at the bottom of
this post is a -prcap output.

Regarding growisofs, dvd+rw-mediainfo shows that in Speed Descriptor #0-3 that
this media indeed can be burned at 4/6/8/12x, however oddly enough under GET
[CURRENT] CONFIGURATION: the Write Speed descriptions only go up to 6x --
However, when growisofs is executed it WILL burn this media at 12x, but
unfortunately I wish to burn this media at 8x; specifying -speed=8 does
nothing but burn this media at 12x again. dvd+rw-mediainfo output is at the
bottom of this post.

I hope that with this info I can help get these two problems resolved with the
NEC ND-3520A burner. If you need more info or testing, I will be happy to
help.

Problem with cdrecord-ProDVD recording speed [REPOST]

Sorry if I repost this message, but I found that this is a
common problem and I can't find a solution on the net.

I have a NEC 3500 Dvd Writer.
I have problems with the recording speed.
I tried two different brands of dvd-r (one from princo that is certified

cdrecord-ProDVD always writes the DVDs at 6x speed.

Why it writes at 6x while I stated -speed=4 ? (the same if -speed=8)

cdrecord-ProDVD key expired?

2004-05-03 Thread Greg Wooledge
I'm getting the infamous Alarm clock error during the countdown
when trying to burn with cdrecord-ProDVD. I've got the key from
the README file (ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/ProDVD/README)
which was updated on 2004-01-26... and it's only May. Is this key
expired already?

Once again, what's the procedure for getting a *real* (non-expiring)
key? We'd be willing to buy one for our organization if necessary.
We're a deparment within a large but non-profit hospital. We burn
data CDs and occasionally DVDs for both doctors and patients.

Details: This is an HP-UX 10.20 system. I've burned using this software
on this computer with the same hardware many, many time. This looks
precisely like the error I get when a cdrecord-ProDVD key expires.

2004-05-03 Thread Brian Sullivan
I saw saw a little note about the format of a request
for a permanent key somewhere once, maybe it was in
his readme file. You need to specify the operating
system and some other things. The main thing you need
to specify though is a valid reason why you can't keep
using a key that expires. I have requested keys from
him numerous times. My reason for the request was that
my company is using it for commercial gain. He hasn't
replied to any of my recent requests. I did manage to
get one permanent key from him several years back.
While his license may state non-commercial use he
seems to be ok with allowing it to be used
commercially. If anyone knows different then please
share.

Can one criticize dvd+rw-tools for so to say sweeping the bug under the
carpet, which might have indirectly complicated life for other
applications and their developers? Well, one could *if* it was done
silently. But it wasn't. Thorough problem analysis was presented to the
public on a FreeBSD list (see
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-ports/2003-December/007424.html)
the moment this [non-intrusive] workaround was introduced in
dvd+rw-tools 5.15.x update. The problem description explicitly mentions
that *all* recording applications are affected, thus depicting how
serious problem is. A.

If you did know about the bug before I did, I may well critisize you:

Why didn't you send a bug report (as I did) in order to get this fatal
bug fixed instead of introducing a workaround that only partially hides
the problem?

Note that FreeBSD has been known to work correctly _before_ this bug has been
introduced.

Is there anything wrong whith these types of media? Advices?

The medium quality should be OK. So it should become usable by cdrecord
after you did run

cdrecord blank=full

on it...

Would people _please_ stop picking on Joerg.

It should be quite obvious that if
  a) people don't read documentation, or
  b) people use bastardized versions of cdrecord, or
  c) people use broken kernels
and claim Joerg's software is broken, then he will be, IMHO understandably,
upset. Look, the software is free and the support is free. I think it's
unreasonable and rude to expect much more (like sugar coated responses)
for free.

Geoffrey, _you_ are the one that made unnecessary personal remarks in
this thread. You're using a broken kernel is not a personal comment.
Joerg simply told the user to use a working kernel, which is the only
reasonable answer to the problem.

Re: Problem using a TEAC DV-W22E with dvd+rw-tools/cdrecord-prodvd/dvdrtools.

2004-04-13 Thread Andy Polyakov
most likely means that your media is poorly supported by your firmware.
Then 3/11/05 L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR doesn't make much sense
either... What media is it anyway (see dvd+rw-mediainfo output for Media
ID)? Poor media support manifests itself in most bizarre ways. There
were reports that DVD-RW media acts as write-once, -twice or three
times. In other workds I'd really recommend to test other media brands,
preferably explicitly recommended by unit manufacturer, before drawing
final conclusions. A.

Ok. The media I bought are as follow:
 - TDK DVD-RW single-sided Data/Video 4.7GB 1-2x;
 - TDK DVD-R single-sided Data/Video 4.7GB 1-4x.
Is there anything wrong whith these types of media?
Note that I didn't questioned media quality per se [just yet], but this
media support by your firmware. New media products are being introduced
to market all the time, some might *require* firmware update...

Advices?
I still stand by test other media brands before drawing final conclusions.

Here are some informations about the report from dvd+rw-mediainfo.

1/ Two new DVD-RW I tried to blank and which are now _not_usable_ says:
 /* First one */
  Mounted Media: 14h, DVD-RW Sequential
no Media ID?
:-[ READ TRACK INFORMATION failed with SK=3h/ASC=11h/ACQ=05h]:
 /* Second one */
  Mounted Media: 14h, DVD-RW Sequential
  Media ID: TTG01
:-[ READ TRACK INFORMATION failed with SK=3h/ASC=11h/ACQ=05h]:
It's first time I observe READ TRACK INFORMATION failing and it's first
time I observe 3/11/05 code. TRACK INFORMATION is vital and
correspodning command is expected to work and so far was observed to
work under *any* circumstances. Failure most likely indicate that PMA,
Program Memory Area, is busted. Is it possible that it happened because
firmware picked inappropriate laser power for this media? Yes, it's
plausible. Note that laser power is purely firmware domain and is beyond
OS or application software control...

2/ A new DVD-RW I *never* used says:
  Mounted Media: 14h, DVD-RW Sequential
  Media ID: TDK502sakuM3
Are these disks come from same pack? If you can confirm that they come
from same pack, then I don't know what to think. Media ID is not
supposed to change as result of recording...

As for Media ID not being reported for finalized DVD-R. Note that unit
reported it as DVD-ROM (see Mounted Media). Apparently
dvd+rw-mediainfo doesn't pull Media ID in such case (looks like bug,
I'll look into it). A.

It is what I think, but when I tried:

I get some errors. In the case of cdrecord, it was about the fact that
there is no support for autosense logic in my particular OS release... as
you pointed it in past posts (related bug recently fixed in the development
branch).

As you may have noticed on another post, I gave a try to -CURRENT and
fall with an usable FreeBSD system. I had to restore it completely. Hey,
it's an active development branch after all! ;)

In the meantime, and just to inform the list for my different tests, I
tried to adapt the modified part for the fixed device from the -CURRENT
tree... without success though (but as I'm not a developer...) :(

Thanks,

Re: Problem using a TEAC DV-W22E with dvd+rw-tools/cdrecord-prodvd/dvdrtools.

Can one criticize dvd+rw-tools for so to say sweeping the bug under the
carpet, which might have indirectly complicated life for other
applications and their developers? Well, one could *if* it was done
silently. But it wasn't. Thorough problem analysis was presented to the
public on a FreeBSD list (see
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-ports/2003-December/007424.html)
the moment this [non-intrusive] workaround was introduced in
dvd+rw-tools 5.15.x update. The problem description explicitly mentions
that *all* recording applications are affected, thus depicting how
serious problem is. A.

If you did know about the bug before I did, I may well critisize you:

Why didn't you send a bug report (as I did) in order to get this fatal
bug fixed instead of introducing a workaround that only partially hides
the problem?

Note that FreeBSD has been known to work correctly _before_ this bug has been
introduced.

Is there anything wrong whith these types of media? Advices?

The medium quality should be OK. So it should become usable by cdrecord
after you did run

cdrecord blank=full

on it...

Would people _please_ stop picking on Joerg.

It should be quite obvious that if
  a) people don't read documentation, or
  b) people use bastardized versions of cdrecord, or
  c) people use broken kernels
and claim Joerg's software is broken, then he will be, IMHO understandably,
upset. Look, the software is free and the support is free. I think it's
unreasonable and rude to expect much more (like sugar coated responses)
for free.

Geoffrey, _you_ are the one that made unnecessary personal remarks in
this thread. You're using a broken kernel is not a personal comment.
Joerg simply told the user to use a working kernel, which is the only
reasonable answer to the problem.

 - TDK DVD-RW single-sided Data/Video 4.7GB 1-2x;

 /* First one */
  Mounted Media: 14h, DVD-RW Sequential
no Media ID?
:-[ READ TRACK INFORMATION failed with SK=3h/ASC=11h/ACQ=05h]:
 /* Second one */

Problem using a TEAC DV-W22E with dvd+rw-tools/cdrecord-prodvd/dvdrtools.

2004-04-11 Thread Julien Gabel
Hello,

I am using a TEAC DV-W22E R.0A on my notebook, which is a all in one
CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW player and writer. My main OS is FreeBSD 5.2.1
(RELEASE-p4) and I already succeed in:

 - write CD-R (cdrecord);
 - write/rewrite CD-RW (cdrecord);
 - write a DVD-R (growisofs).

But it seems _not_possible_ to write (or rewrite or blank etc.) a DVD-RW.
Here is the exact version of software I try to use:
 # portversion -v | grep -i dvd+rw-tools
 dvd+rw-tools-5.19.4.9.7
 # cdrecord -version
 Cdrecord 2.00.3 (i386-unknown-freebsd5.2.1) Copyright (C) 1995-2002 Jörg
 Schilling
 # cdrecord-prodvd -version
 Cdrecord-ProDVD-Clone 2.01a24 (i386-unknown-freebsd5.2) Copyright (C)
 1995-2004 Jörg Schilling
 # dvdrtools -version
 [...]
 Based on:
 Cdrecord 1.11a15 (i386-unknown-freebsd5.1) Copyright (C) 1995-2001 Jörg
 Schilling

I followed the steps from the documentation, especially those:
   creating-dvds.html
 - http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/
 - ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/cdrecord/ProDVD/README
 - http://machiel.generaal.net/index.php?subject=dvdrtools

1/ For example, when I try to blank a DVD-RW in sequential mode, I get:
 # dvd+rw-format -blank=full /dev/cd0
 * DVD±RW format utility by [EMAIL PROTECTED], version 4.9.
:-( failed to locate Quick Format descriptor.
 * 4.7GB DVD-RW media in Sequential mode detected.
 * blanking |:-[ READ TRACK INFORMATION failed with SK=3h/ASC=11h/ACQ=05h]:
 Input/output error

2/ When I try to put a DVD-RW in the restricted overwrite format, I get:
 # dvd+rw-format -force=full /dev/cd0
 * DVD±RW format utility by [EMAIL PROTECTED], version 4.9.
 * 4.7GB DVD-RW media in Sequential mode detected.
 * formatting .:-[ READ TRACK INFORMATION failed with SK=3h/ASC=11h/ACQ=05h]
 : Input/output error

Because the three software I try seems not working, I tend to think that
this particular writer is not (yet?) supported.
Is there something I can do in order to make it working?

Thanks in advance for your replies,

Ouch! If you really mean emulate ATAPI devices as SCSI ditto via CAM,
i.e. the 'device atapicam' in kernel config file: it IS present. I think
I already use this _facility_ through cdrecord. As I say, I already write
CD-R (cdrecord) / write/rewrite CD-RW (cdrecord) / write DVD-R (growisofs)
which all use the device /dev/cd0: CDROM driver for the CAM SCSI subsystem.

but since you said it is a FreeBSD kernel bug and since you provide a

whith this release; why seems it not working with dvd+rwtools too?

In addition, you should have noted immediately after upgrading to the

I try to use dvd+rwtools in the first place because I follow the directions
provided by the FreeBSD Handbook and because there is a FreeBSD port in
order to managed its installation/upgrade process. Since it seems not
to run as expected for me, I searched an other tool, and because I was very
happy with cdrecord for CD-R/-RW in the past, I decided to give a try to
cdrecord-proDVD (even if there is not a port yet: this is the reason for
using the binary version of this program). That's all.

This can explain why I succeed writing a DVD-R using growisofs; but not

the sequential format using dvd+rw-format.

Maybe I will reconsider my position on using the -RELEASE. As I said
before: maybe this will resolve this particular problem, but running
a -CURRENT has some other disavantages!... :-\

Because this is related to a bug, is it not possible to integrate a
patch for this in the security advisories and other critical fixes
branch for RELENG_5_2?

For the second part of your answer, I already succeed to:
 - write CD-R (cdrecord);
 - write/rewrite CD-RW (cdrecord);
 - write a DVD-R (growisofs).

So, as stated by Jörg Schilling in a previous post:
Of course this bug caused cdrecord to fail in nearly all situations.

TEAC DV-W22E R.0A

But it seems _not_possible_ to write (or rewrite or blank etc.) a DVD-RW.
 dvd+rw-tools-5.19.4.9.7
1/ For example, when I try to blank a DVD-RW in sequential mode, I get:
 # dvd+rw-format -blank=full /dev/cd0
 * DVD±RW format utility by [EMAIL PROTECTED], version 4.9.

The fact that you see failed to locate Quick format descriptor alone
most likely means that your media is poorly supported by your firmware.

Re: Problem using a TEAC DV-W22E with dvd+rw-tools/cdrecord-prodvd/dvdrtools.

2004-04-11 Thread Andy Polyakov
dvd+rw-tools were teached to obtain sense information from kernel
manually, so they fully work on 5.2.1. cdrecord relies on working
autosense and thus don't work on 5.2.1.

I would call this behavior of dvd+rw-tools a bug as the CAM standard
requires auto-sense to work. If FreeBSD is fixed, the modified
dvd+rw-tools will stop working in case it correctly evaluates
error codes.
I can assure FreeBSD users that dvd+rw-tools won't stop working the
moment the kernel bug in question is fixed. Nor would you have to
recompile dvd+rw-tools after it's fixed. dvd+rw-tools detect the kernel
deficiency at run-time and are designed to work in either particular
situation.

Can one criticize dvd+rw-tools for so to say sweeping the bug under the
carpet, which might have indirectly complicated life for other
applications and their developers? Well, one could *if* it was done
silently. But it wasn't. Thorough problem analysis was presented to the
public on a FreeBSD list (see
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-ports/2003-December/007424.html)
the moment this [non-intrusive] workaround was introduced in
dvd+rw-tools 5.15.x update. The problem description explicitly mentions
that *all* recording applications are affected, thus depicting how
serious problem is. A.

Hello,

I am using a TEAC DV-W22E R.0A on my notebook, which is a all in one
CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW player and writer. My main OS is FreeBSD 5.2.1
(RELEASE-p4) and I already succeed in:

 - write CD-R (cdrecord);
 - write/rewrite CD-RW (cdrecord);
 - write a DVD-R (growisofs).

But it seems _not_possible_ to write (or rewrite or blank etc.) a DVD-RW.
Here is the exact version of software I try to use:

1/ For example, when I try to blank a DVD-RW in sequential mode, I get:

Because the three software I try seems not working, I tend to think that

Is there something I can do in order to make it working?

I use a GENERIC kernel provided with the 5.2.1 release, with just the
following support added:

dvd+rw-tools were teached to obtain sense information from kernel

autosense and thus don't work on 5.2.1.

I would call this behavior of dvd+rw-tools a bug as the CAM standard
requires auto-sense to work. If FreeBSD is fixed, the modified
dvd+rw-tools will stop working in case it correctly evaluates
error codes.

Cdrecord works perfectly with this drive. You howver need a working
kernel if you like to use cdrecord.because cdrecord evaluates
error codes and the SCSI protocol is a protocol that relies on correct
error codes that simply provide a way to return some special status back
to the application.

Because this is a _release_, and running the -CURRENT (CVS) version

whith this release; why seems it not working with dvd+rwtools too?

In addition, you should have noted immediately after upgrading to the
broken OS release and send out a bug report as well as downgraded back
 to the previous release.

The notebook, in which there is the DVD writer I want to use, is relatively
new... and I never had a DVD writer before. On the other hand, Pav
Lucistnik has explained that this was corrected for now, so...

It seems that you did not use cdrecord but dvd+rwtools and for this
reason did not realize your problems early enough...

That's all.

Thanks for your answers,

I already try to use dvd+rw-tools according to:
 http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/
 creating-dvds.html

But here is what I get:
  # dvd+rw-format -force /dev/cd0
  * DVD±RW format utility by [EMAIL PROTECTED], version 4.9.
:-( failed to locate Quick Format descriptor.
  * 4.7GB DVD-RW media in Sequential mode detected.
  * formatting |:-[ READ TRACK INFORMATION failed with
 SK=3h/ASC=11h/ACQ=05h]
:Input/output error

 Or:
  # dvd+rw-format -blank=all /dev/cd0
  * DVD±RW format utility by [EMAIL PROTECTED], version 4.9.
:-( failed to locate Quick Format descriptor.
  * 4.7GB DVD-RW media in Sequential mode detected.
  * blanking .:-[ READ TRACK INFORMATION failed with
 SK=3h/ASC=11h/ACQ=05h]
:Input/output error

If I can understand the problem relating to the internal bug with the
FreeBSD kernel (and not using cdrecord-proDVD), what may be wrong here?
 Am I missing something?

I'm not absolutely sure but I guess only growisofs accounts for the
kernel deficiency and not dvd+rw-format. Andy?

This can explain why I succeed writing a DVD-R using growisofs; but not
to put a DVD-RW in the restricted overwrite format, nor change back to
the sequential format using dvd+rw-format.

The help here is not easy. I'd suggest you to upgrade to -CURRENT, if
you're ready to face all the possible problem of running CVS code.

... not really. In this particular case: a choice between
  FreeBSD-CURRENT + cdrecord-proDVD
 or
  FreeBSD-5.2.1 + dvd+rw-tools
I would prefer the second choice: staying with the OS release branch.

Other posibilities are running FreeBSD 4.x or avoid using cdrecord.

Is there no chance to use FreeBSD-5.2.1 + dvd+rw-tools together?

You should really go to a working version of FreeBSD instead. Note that
 you'll hit this problem on CD-R too, and dvd+rw-tools don't do CD-R.
Can you blank a CD-RW using cdrecord? Does cdrdao works for you? There
are no alternatives to these programs.

 - write CD-R (cdrecord);
 - write/rewrite CD-RW (cdrecord);
 - write a DVD-R (growisofs).

So, as stated by Jörg Schilling in a previous post:
Of course this bug caused cdrecord to fail in nearly all situations.
If cdrecord did work with the buggy OS, it was pure luck.
Maybe is it some luck, but it seems to run correctly...

Thanks,

Fact is that you like to use this kernel for CD/DVD writing.

As (beacause of named bug) your kernel is absolutely unusable, you have to
decide whether you like to keep the broken kernel of whether you like to
write CD/DVDs.

 * 4.7GB DVD-RW media in Sequential mode detected.
 * formatting .:-[ READ TRACK INFORMATION failed with SK=3h/ASC=11h/ACQ=05h]

Because the three software I try seems not working, I tend to think that
this particular writer is not (yet?) supported.
Is there something I can do in order to make it working?
The fact that you see failed to locate Quick format descriptor alone
most likely means that your media is poorly supported by your firmware.

*All* dvd+rw-tools account for kernel deficiency. Reported failure to
format/blank media is believed to be media problem [at least till it's
proven otherwise by testing other brand]. A.

Re: Problem using a TEAC DV-W22E with dvd+rw-tools/cdrecord-prodvd/dvdrtools.

2004-04-11 Thread Andy Polyakov
dvd+rw-tools were teached to obtain sense information from kernel
manually, so they fully work on 5.2.1. cdrecord relies on working
autosense and thus don't work on 5.2.1.

I would call this behavior of dvd+rw-tools a bug as the CAM standard
requires auto-sense to work. If FreeBSD is fixed, the modified
dvd+rw-tools will stop working in case it correctly evaluates
error codes.
I can assure FreeBSD users that dvd+rw-tools won't stop working the
moment the kernel bug in question is fixed. Nor would you have to
recompile dvd+rw-tools after it's fixed. dvd+rw-tools detect the kernel
deficiency at run-time and are designed to work in either particular
situation.

Can one criticize dvd+rw-tools for so to say sweeping the bug under the
carpet, which might have indirectly complicated life for other
applications and their developers? Well, one could *if* it was done
silently. But it wasn't. Thorough problem analysis was presented to the
public on a FreeBSD list (see
http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-ports/2003-December/007424.html)
the moment this [non-intrusive] workaround was introduced in
dvd+rw-tools 5.15.x update. The problem description explicitly mentions
that *all* recording applications are affected, thus depicting how
serious problem is. A.

sorry for the missing description and the HTML mail (Lotus Notes ;-) ).

I had:

And then, in the features list, any DVD burning capabilities were
missing.

When I started burning, cdrecord said, that the device was not ready, if
I remember right.

Meanwhile, I have flashed the drive to firmware HSOP (unfortunately only
a Windows flash software is available from LiteOn).

With the cdrecord-ProDVD 2.01a27, the Device type: Removable
CD-ROM info is still the same, but burning works fine nevertheless!

By the way, Mr Schilling, thanks very much for this excellent software!

cdrecord uses the official write method for DVD-R. This includes
