It's in all ReleaseNotes, on the spanish frontpage, on the fr frontpage
(which isn't referenced anywhere yet, afaics).

HowToContribute is in the FAQs (FAQ frontpage, english and spanish), in
the ReleaseNotes, in AboutThisWiki, in ToDo, on the Events frontpage,
there is wiki:HowToContribute/Packages (which isn't correct anyway,
AFAICS), in ArtWork (where it really doesn't matter), there is
HowToContribute/EditingCentOSWiki, it is in the "General" FAQ, it's in
GettingHelp/ListInfo, in Contribute/, in HowTos/Amavisd - and that
should be about it ...

No idea how to go at that - we have to move the HowToContribute subpages
first (and put a redirect into the old pages, so google or other pages
referencing it don't get upset).

Me neither - But HowTo and TipsAndTricks still seem logical and senseful
to me.

Probably. Or have two config sections (one for x86_64, one for i386) so
people can still cut and paste.

Yes. Or write it twice or three times, for 4 and 5 (or maybe even 3).
This has been done on several pages, see the HardwareList. If it really
is release specific (meaning it really is only for 5 or for 4), this
should be stated directly at the top of the document ...

What could be done and means a bit of work: Work with categories on the
wiki pages.

So you could have a Category64Bit, Category32Bit, CategoryCentOS5,
CategoryCentOS4 at the bottom of each page. We could then create
overview pages for CentOS 4, CentOS 5, x86_64 (and so on) on which these
articles will automatically be listed.

A CategoryCentOS4 overview page could look like this:

http://wiki.centos.org/CategoryCentOS4 (this page does not exist yet!)

%<%<%<%<%<%<%<%<%<%<%<%<
## Please edit system and help pages ONLY in the moinmaster wiki! For
more
## information, please see MoinMaster:MoinPagesEditorGroup.
##master-page:CategoryTemplate
##master-date:Unknown-Date
#format wiki
#language en

Everything on this Wiki related to CentOS 4

'''A list of pages in this category:'''

[[FullSearch()]]

CategoryCategory
%<%<%<%<%<%<%<%<%<%<%<%<

See for a bit more information
about Categories in Moin.

Why would this mean "a bit of work"?

Because we have to retouch every page to make this work.

Ralph

AFAICR this is the first time we hit a problem with software being arch
specific, so I don't think that it is a high priority issue. For release
specific information we put CentOS 3, CentOS 4, CentOS 5 sections into
documents, so maybe this is something which can/should be done as well
for arch specific information, too?

The problem with the FAQs on the web site is, that only a small amount
of people can edit there - and those are the people who tend to have not
enough time as it is at the moment. That's why the FAQs on the wiki are
more current. On the other hand you can add comments to the FAQs on the
web site which isn't that easy to do with the wiki. I tested some
comment plugin for moin on wiki-m.centos.org, but that has one major
drawback: It works fine for normal article pages (so maybe we should
incorporate it into the wiki), but you cannot have more than one
instance of that plugin per page. Tat means that you can only add
comments to the complete FAQ section, not to single questions on that
FAQ.

Courtesy and to have something within the centos space to point to.
Plus: Finding the manuals on upstream *all in one place* (like
clustermanagement, virtualization and so on) isn't that easy.

Question: Do we need more than we have now (meaning: Do we need trac and
subversion or is this mailing list and the wiki enough for now)? We
cannot change the documentation we get from upstream and I don't

Okay, Russ did some changes to that which explain a bit more *why* we
want people to adhere to those "standards" - but is everybody okay with
what is in there, the UserPreferences page and the idea in general?

If not, I'd like to start that over the next weekend.

Plus: I put the "First Time" stuff on top of the user preferences page.
So already existing users might be a tad annoyed by that, but first time
users will see it more clearly.

[CentOS-docs] Opening of the wiki Part III(?) ...

2008-10-06 Thread Ralph Angenendt
... which will hopefully be the last part.

Sorry that it took that long, but I didn't have too much time on my
hands over the last two months or so.

This is what should be the last stages of opening up the wiki:

a) I have changed the account creation page:
   . Please view that page
   while logged out of wiki-m.

b) While doing so I have changed the Guidelines page for the wiki.
Please review that page and add to the "Guidelines concerning Wiki
   content" part:

c) So there will be an alias "wikiteam AT centos.org" to which
submissions for new accounts will go to. The people on the editorial
team for the wiki will get mails for that alias, so they can add the
   person requiring access to EditGroup.

d) Which means that more people will be allowed to edit
    - all the people on the editorial
   team will be able to.

e) All people which already have access to some pages or subpages of the
wiki will be moved into the general EditGroup so they can edit
anywhere on the wiki (which means that people have to take more care
about what they edit where). I think we might want to take the front
page out of the pages people can edit.

So please: Add to the Contribution page (if possible on wiki-m or just
point out stuff I have forgotten in this thread).

And even more important: Who wanted to be on the Editorial Team? Being
on it means that you are supposed to subscribe to *all* pages on the
wiki (meaning that you'll get a changelog diff for all changed pages via
mail). And it means that you should at least skim through those diffs to
see if there is a violation of the wiki guidelines (or if some spammer
still does his spamruns manually). So please raise your hands *NOW*.

Anything else I missed?

Cheers,

Ralph

We have content in there which needs to go somewhere else before that
(like the directory server or openjdk-1.6). Tim: Have you finished
moving^W^W^Wany idea where one could put that? Otherwise I'm behind that
idea.

*Or* we need to redefine the testing.repo.

I don't really think you can. Either we need to test stuff within qa,
which will not work because of the varietey of stuff in testing (there
are packages in testing I cannot even remotely test because I haven't
the faintest idea what they are), or we need to set up "personal" repos
for testing, for example a centos-dirserv.repo, so that people who are
interested can test stuff like that *before* it goes into
centosplus/extras. But you need large exposure (possibly from within the
community of a certain application) for testing packages.

Having smacked myself rather often with a printout the official HowTo
collection (and that hurts!), I don't think that you really can do a
large wiki article on samba in general without writing (at least a
chapter of a) book.

Probably a series of smaller "Tips and Tricks" would be better here,
just like the rpm page.

So have a TipsAndTricks/Samba page and then have subpages off that,
maybe?

Yes. Maybe this page should be extended a bit so it actually shows what
has to be *in* the keys (meaning the actual dialog from openssl), so
that you run with your *own* self signed certificate and not the one
from the package?

I actually like the openssl commands on that page (as a reference). But
yes, there should be some explanation of what they actually do.

We are able to man an "editorial wiki team" which can monitor and review
original (meaning english) articles, we are not able to review translations at
the moment, at least not with non western european languages, afaics (we even
had problems reviewing italian content). And even with western european
languages, that doesn't really happen - although I'm not sure if the spanish
translation still is a group effort as it was in the beginning.

Great article.

What maybe should be added to the article is the fact, that SELinux
doesn't need programs to be changed, meaning that programs do not (need
to) know about SELinux at all for it to work. So a SELinux denial just
looks like a normal "access denied" to any program.

now be fairly complete, with limitied changes to them.

Yes. And now there is someone who wants to expand on that and make those
short snippets into a somewhat more elaborated page (at least that is
how I take the offer to rewrite those pages and/or create those pages).

Your quoting makes it look like you did. But no, *I* used the phrase.

This is a mailing list, would I have responded to you the list wouldn't
have gotten the mail. And your mail was the one I saw most fitting to
make that remark - which could have been into a response to another mail
also. And here in this case the quotation marks mark direct speech.

We have many parts on the wiki where it would be wise to extract some
content and put it into it's own context or rather page. This is one of
the examples where it can be seen.

Keeping something as central as rpm rebuilding in one place and link to
that will do the documentation on the wiki good.

Well, hints and tips for building rpms/rebuilding srpms are all over the

where anything else which needs explanations on doing so can link to is

That's exactly what he wants to do, as that area is not really covered
on the wiki (yes, sure, the the stuff above has to be pointed to in that
article).

But other than you he does not want to put it somewhere and "link it
in", he wants to put it on the wiki so it can be found *there* if
someone skims through the link pages of the wiki (or does a search on
the wiki). I have no idea why people here think that that is the wrong
concept.

And you cannot see the problem there? So it is already there - in three
different articles - and has to be changed *everywhere* if some small
aspect of rpm building changes.

Having to change that in *one* place and let all other places link to
that is a much cleaner approach.

Still: People tend to go to the CentOS wiki for finding information (or
they are pointed to it). And I'd like to have information like that
available *in* the wiki where more than one person can change it should
the need arise.

You *need* to keep the original names. If our wiki finds a page in de/
space (or es/ for what it's worth) and the page isn't there, it
automatically redirects to the english page.

This gives you the possibility to completely translate link pages (like
de/TipsAndTricks) *including* relative links - and if the german page
isn't there, you'll get the english one.

I did. It's a wiki. So anyone who wants to improve on a page is invited to

Well, the existing pages have rather short snippets on that issue. If

verbose pages. I think that this is a good idea to avoid multiplication.

I tend to forget how the recursive ACLs work (not as expected, mostly).

Try again.

Seeing the quality of the stuff you already added to the wiki, I just
gave you access to everything under HowTos - so you should be able to
add that page yourself.

[CentOS-docs] Live-CD release notes ...

2008-07-02 Thread Ralph Angenendt
Hey,

is a little note from the Live CD creator about the Release Notes for
the Live CD. You all should be able to create pages under
http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOSLiveCD5.2 (like
http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOSLiveCD5.2/German).

So if you're in for another round of Release Note translations - have a
go at it >:)

Cheers,

Ralph

It is listed in all release notes (but: All other release note versions
have it as a link to the package manifest).

Go ahead, you can edit under http://wiki.centos.org/fr/FAQ now. I'm
relying on the french readers here to proofread and give you hints and
tipps.

Last round guys! There have been a few last minute changes yesterday >:)

After that it is over until CentOS 5.3 - although we'd like to do new
installation slides for the next update, so you probably hear from me a
bit earlier then.

Again: Thanks for all the time and the effort you put in there.
