New ceph-users list

2013-02-07 Thread Ross David Turk

Hi, ceph-devel!

It sure is getting busy around here. Just six months ago, this list averaged
about 5 messages per day…now we're regularly seeing over four times that, along
with over 250 new faces.

I think it's time to have a dedicated list for users and operators, distinct
from this one. I've created one for us to use (ceph-us...@ceph.com) and
updated the website so that people can find it.

Subscribe / unsubscribe:
http://lists.ceph.com/listinfo.cgi/ceph-users-ceph.com/

Archives:
http://lists.ceph.com/pipermail/ceph-users-ceph.com/

While everything shakes out, we'll probably encounter threads here that belong
on ceph-users. Perhaps it would be a good idea to CC ceph-users on responses
to those threads for a week or so to make sure people don't get left behind?

Suggestions and concerns are welcome. Thanks!

Best,
Ross

The Ceph Census

2013-02-13 Thread Ross David Turk

Hi! It's been a while since my last poll about Ceph deployments and use cases.
Since there are so many more of us now, I think it's a good time to do it
again. This time, I've set up a survey.

I am particularly interested in how many deployments of Ceph there are, how
much underlying storage they manage, whether they're in production, and how
people plan to use them.

It's a very short survey (10 questions, mostly multiple-choice), and shouldn't
take more than a minute or two. The results will be public, and I think it
will help us all figure out how to focus our efforts.

http://ceph.com/census

This information will be compiled and published on the Ceph blog for all to
review and enjoy. Thanks!

Cheers,
Ross

Re: The Ceph Census

2013-02-15 Thread Ross David Turk

Hey folks. We've gotten nearly 50 responses so far, and the data is proving to
be quite interesting! I will share it on the blog early next week.

The survey will be open until next Monday so that everyone has an opportunity
to participate. If you haven't gotten around to adding your cluster, you still
can - it's a pretty short list of questions, shouldn't take more than a minute
or two.

Re: The Ceph Census

2013-03-01 Thread Ross David Turk

Hi! The results of our first Census have been posted:

http://ceph.com/community/results-from-the-ceph-census/

In total, we received 81 responses representing 21 clusters in production. The
blog post contains some high-level analysis and raw data is available for those
who might be interested in digging deeper.

Thank you to all those who participated! Let's do it again soon, ya?

Cheers,
Ross

Hi!

GMane has now added ceph-users:
http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.comp.file-systems.ceph.user

I updated the Mailing List page on ceph.com to point to these archives instead
so that people know they're there :)

Inktank Office Hours

2013-03-13 Thread Ross David Turk

Hi!

As the Ceph community grows, it's important that help is available to new
users. Up to this point, Inktank engineers have been monitoring the channel
and mailing list as time permits. That made sense when there wasn't much foot
traffic, but we have a lot now! We'd like to introduce something a bit more
predictable.

Inktank is establishing "office hours" for IRC and the ceph-users mailing list.
During these hours, an Inktank engineer will be focused on answering questions
and providing guidance to community users of Ceph. Our first office hours will
take place tomorrow.

Inktank office hours are posted on the new Getting Help page:
http://ceph.com/resources/getting-help

Naturally, folks from Inktank will still be around outside of those hours,
although they may not be dedicated to the task of helping others. It's
important to keep in mind that this isn't tech support and it doesn't come with
any of the guarantees you would expect from a professional support contract.

You may have noticed that the Getting Help page has our Inktank logo on it. I
would like to do the same for any organization or individual who is interested
in establishing office hours of their own. There are plenty of hours left -
drop a line to commun...@ceph.com if you're interested!

Cheers,
Ross

Ceph Developer Summit

2013-04-11 Thread Ross David Turk

Hi, everyone!

I'm pleased to announce that we have begun preparations for the first
Ceph Developer Summit. This summit is where planning for the upcoming
Dumpling release will happen, and attendance is open to all. It will be
virtual (IRC, etherpad, video conference), so you won't even have to
get on an airplane! We're targeting May 6.

Between now and then, we're gathering blueprints for new Ceph features!
A blueprint is a document that describes work someone intends to do,
usually reserved for larger features that require discussion. If
there's a feature you think Ceph should have, we encourage you to write
your thoughts and plans in a blueprint. Then make sure to attend the
summit to discuss its implementation with others in the Ceph community.

For more details, take a look at Patrick's blog post on ceph.com:

http://ceph.com/events/ceph-developer-summit/

Blueprints are currently being accepted at the Ceph wiki. On the front
page, at the bottom, there's a button to create a new one.

Oh! Yeah! There's a wiki now. It's kind of bare-bones at the moment, as
most wikis are when they first enter the world, but it anxiously awaits
your content. Log in with your OpenID credentials and pick a username
to get started. If you're having trouble, or have feedback, your words
are always welcome at commun...@ceph.com.

Best,
Ross

Re: [ceph-users] Ceph Developer Summit

2013-04-22 Thread Ross David Turk

Hi Loic!

I totally agree. I've actually set up an etherpad, but haven't had a
chance to tell anyone yet! We should add one to each blueprint before
the summit begins. You can find the etherpad here:

http://pad.ceph.com

I wrote a quick dekiscript plugin that embeds an etherpad inside a
wiki page. If you include this tag in your wiki page, it will embed a
pad with the same name as the Wiki page ID:

  {{ etherpad{} }}

If you want to specify a pad name, use this instead:

  {{ etherpad{ name: "foo" } }}

Let me know if it works for you!

Cheers,
Ross

New Date: Ceph Developer Summit

2013-04-22 Thread Ross David Turk

Hi, everyone!

We have discovered some conflicts on the date we originally picked for
our Ceph Developer Summit. Unfortunately, some of them are beyond
control. To make sure that everyone interested can participate, we'd
like to move it to the next day: Tuesday, May 7.

Sorry for the change. If you're interested in attending (virtually)
but can't make the new date, please let me know.

Patrick and I are working on an agenda and a few other bits and pieces.
Look for an update later this week. Thanks!

Cheers,
Ross

Ceph Dev Summit: Final Details

2013-05-06 Thread Ross David Turk

Hi! Our first Ceph Developer Summit starts tomorrow at 8am. This email
contains some last minute details that you may find useful if you're
planning to attend.

The schedule for the Summit can be found here:
http://wiki.ceph.com/01Planning/Developer_Summit

Links to the blueprint, hangout, etherpad, and IRC channel have been
embedded in the schedule, so they should all be in one place when you need
them.

We have set up two hangouts, one for each track. If you've identified
yourself as an owner or interested party of a blueprint, you will receive
an invite to your track's hangout shortly before your session starts. If
not, you can easily be invited to the hangout by getting our attention on
IRC (rturk or scuttlemonkey). If you just want to observe, you don't have
to do anything except click on the event link in the schedule to open the
live video stream.

After the summit, we'll be publishing videos and IRC logs for those who
couldn't make it.

Sage's intro will cover some housekeeping items and establish the summit's
general process and objectives. I suggest attending, if you can - it's a
good opportunity to get everyone on the same page before we begin.

If you have any questions, please let me know. Talk to you tomorrow!

Cheers,
Ross

Ceph Workshop - Amsterdam, November 2

2012-10-04 Thread Ross David Turk

Hi, all.

On November 2nd in Amsterdam, Inktank and 42on are hosting the very first
full-day Ceph workshop, and we'd like you to join us!

The workshop will be tailored for new and experienced Ceph users alike, and
will be attended by a slew of Inktank folks and other experts - including Sage!
Sessions will cover Ceph's history and architecture, and we plan to share a few
successful case studies. We also plan to run an installation workshop for those
who are new to Ceph.

More details will be provided soon...but for now, save the date!

Cheers,
Ross
