allow incoming VPN connections but both of the routers that I have
seem to block the needed IPSEC traffic (Protocol 47). I've gone so
far as to set my server up as the DMZ machine on my router.

Either that or Verizon is blocking it... I doubt it but it's
possible. It won't matter after March 31 because I'm switching back
 to Cable modem.

Regardless, I'm faced with two options at this point. First is to put
together a Linux based firewall in a computer with two network cards.
I'll need to get a couple of NICs if I go that route. Other option is
to get a router that actually allows for passing through of the
correct protocols. My problem is that I don't have time to locate a
home router that will allow this.

 Anyone have suggestions?

 Thanks!

Re: IMAP or not to IMAP ...

2008-03-04 Thread Ben Doom
I used to have issues connecting to my home server, but ... that's cause
it was a home server, on a small fraction of a 768-up pipe (also ran a
fileserver and webserver over the same pipe, so...)

--Doom

Erika L. Walker wrote:
 H. So many good things to say about IMAP eh? I do like IMAP ...

I use Google Hosted almost exclusively for all email accounts.

I need Outlook's features otherwise I'd continue to use the Google web
version which I have been doing for the past year. But, the ability to have
about a dozen plus other accounts within easy one click access, the preview
pane, One Note access and the RSS feed reader made me convert back to
 Outlook...

In fact, since switching back to Outlook last month, my inbox went from over
1000 emails down to a few hundred because I was getting a little too lost
with organizing things. Don't have a concrete why it's easier for me to
organize in Outlook, it just is.

The thing I was noticing though, is that it's so slow to synchronize and
check all the IMAP accounts. The pop's just come on in. Done, dusted. (yes,
I leave pop emails on the server in case I need emails and don't have my
laptop) But the IMAP's are taking forever. I've got 8 IMAP accounts.

For my main RUWebby account, I've got over hundred filters/labels which
yes, translated nicely into folders in Outlook, but to check them all takes
 Outlook a long time.

So I guess I'm trying to figure out how to streamline this process better. I
thought maybe POP would be quicker than IMAP, just leave everything on
Google so I get the backup if I need it.

The answer may seem simple to you guys, cut down on email. But I can't. I've
already tried. These are either client accounts or all related to the
business. In fact, I've got more to add ... :(

But you all seem to have no issues with speed? Outlook has crashed a couple
times on me as well ...

 Subject: while I am complaining

My daughter started public school in January and got her cell phone
taken away last week for texting in class. I am not really ok with
that, but I can see their point. Where they lose me is that they
refuse to release the phone to me either. That's my phone, not her
phone, and I am paying for cell phone service so I can keep track of
 my errant 15-yo. WTF.

The principal is saying that they have a policy and that makes it ok.

Methinks not. You do not just take people's property. You can restrict
their use on campus sure. But take the cell phone away? Just take it?
 Not.

If I am the first person to object to this then I *really worry about
 public life in America.

 Dana

Very customizable, easy to schedule or run manually, good stuff.

Well, Addison Bain, former NASA engineer, sort of proved that it was
the skin which was coated with, basically, rocket fuel. He showed
that when the airship lowered its lines to the ground one of the
purposes was to discharge static electricity. That was a good idea
except there could be places where the electricity had to jump a gap
and, in doing so, ignited the rocket fuel coating.

There is some disputing of this but if you watch the tape it seems
obvious that the skin of the airship went up like a marshmellow and,
since you could see the flames, it wasn't hydrogen that was burning.
 But who knows.

Yes. Anecdotally, most of the gay people I know fall in this category.

By the way, there is nothing in the Constitution requiring every business to
accommodate gay people. So it cannot be discrimination. Those businesses
that cater to the gay community do so only from a profit motive. (that is
after all the purpose of business...to make money)

I certainly did not mean to imply that they are doing something illegal.
You can be discriminatory without breaking laws. However, it is still
discrimination.

Anytime you withhold services or goods (or, for that matter, courtesy)
from a group of people based on membership in the group, it is
discrimination. However, in the US it is generally only illegal to deny
employment, housing, etc. from a group in a discriminatory manner.

I'm not saying that it is a problem. I'm not saying it is wrong. The
question was posed, Are they discriminatory against gays?. My opinion
is that they are.

Quite frankly, and this is unusual for me, I don't really care. They
are a private, Christian organization which does not want to provide
services to gay people. OK.

Discrimination is not inherently wrong. I'm very discriminatory in who
I date. You have to be smart, funny, and (most of all) female. I'm not
anticipating being sued by dumb bisexual men.

So, no. It's not so terrible that they focus on (mainly) Christian

Re: Ethanol Significantly Increases Greenhouse Gases

2008-02-11 Thread Ben Doom
My understanding was that the (currently) most efficient means of
producing hydrogen gas was a catalyzed splitting of water, but I could
be wrong.

Regardless, you have to get the hydrogen somewhere. So, even if the ony
byproduct of the splitting itself is O2, you still have to get power
from somewhere, which currently (usually) means producing CO2.

I wasn't trying to answer any questions about actually generating the
power supply, so much as concerns about what happens when you start
dumping so much water vapor into the atmosphere.

Robert Munn wrote:

'Hydrogen combustion, like that of petroleum, is limited by the Carnot
 efficiency http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exergy_efficiency, but is
completely different from the hydrogen fuel cell's chemical conversion
process of hydrogen to electricity and water without combustion. Hydrogen
fuel cells emit only water during use, while producing carbon dioxide
emissions during the majority of hydrogen production, which comes from
natural gas. Direct methane http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methane or natural
gas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_gas conversion (whether IC or FC)
also generate carbon dioxide emissions, but direct hydrocarbon conversion in
high-temperature fuel cells produces lower carbon dioxide emissions than
either combustion of the same fuel (due to the higher efficiency of the fuel
cell process compared to combustion), and also lower carbon dioxide
emissions than hydrogen fuel cells, which use methane less efficiently than
high-temperature fuel cells by first converting it to high-purity hydrogen
by steam reforming. Although hydrogen can also be produced by electrolysis
of water using renewable energy, at present less than 3% of hydrogen is
 produced in this way.'

What I take from this is that hydrogen fuel cells product CO2 during the
extraction of hydrogen from natural gas, but product water during chemical
conversion of the hydrogen to electricity. Sounds like this isn't even close
to being commercially viable right now.

moments where there is a total shift due to new discoveries, new bad
guys, or new good guys. DON'T watch the newer episodes while you are
watching the older ones and watch them all in order if you want to
really appreciate those moments in all their glory.

Alot of shows have jump the shark moments that kill the show, but
Stargate's done very well with taking those wild plotlines and making
them part of a legitimate and good storyline. At the end of either
season 7 or 8 they actually shot the last episode of the season with the
possibility of it being the last episode of the entire series so it's a
particularly good cliffhanger. The show actually got picked back up
again after that so the big ending for that season set them up for
some huge plot shifts in the following season.

about this afterward, and neither of us saw anything.

On Monday, David, who had seen Cloverfield later the same day Mike and I had

 the end of the movie.

What fecking splash?! I'm looking for the damned thing with baited breath,

 call that good filmmaking?

So I revise my earlier review from 9 Blown Goats to a full *10 BLOWN GOATS*
for outright pissing me off *days* after the movie did its original damage.

Oh, the work this guy had to go through blowing no fewer than ten goats, one
right after the other, right out there in the middle of the barnyard.
Chasing them down, tackling them, immobilizing their horned little heads,
holding their hind legs so they don't kick him, and then, finally, blowing
 them.

He could have taken all that effort and instead channeled it into making a
non-goat-blowing movie, or at least one that didn't place as much of a high
burden on the local goat population.
