I'm in line with Jerry, I don't care how you format your code as long as it
is formatted in a readable manner, you do it the same way throughout and I
can reverse engineer it quickly if I have to make changes.

oh yeah and scope the damn variables so I don't have to hunt around for
them.

Re: Planning a visit

2015-02-09 Thread Scott Stewart

Cool, my mom graduated from Mount Vernon in the fifties . :)

They've also remodeled American History and there's not as much there, the
entire computer exhibit is gone and the entire west side of the museum is
still under construction. I think the best bet to keep the kids occupied is
Air and Space.

They've opened a distilerry at Mount Vernon, you can buy products but they
are very expensive, There are no tastings on the tour but you can sample
at the Inn at Mt Vernon.

I've never been to the Newseum so I'm not much help there. On the plus side
the Washington Monument is open again after repairs and some remodeling
after the earthquake a couple of years ago. If you get a chance to go to
the National Building Museum, I understand that there is a lot for kids to
do there.

Re: Planning a visit

2015-02-09 Thread Scott Stewart

Hatton, you're correct. Huntington is the last stop on the Yellow line and
Franconia/Springfield is the last stop on the Blue Line. They both are in
Fairfax County.

It sounds like you've got a good location. King St. is the "strip" in Old
Town Alexandria (and by that I mean where the restaurants and bars are) you
can find everything from fast food to five star dining. Right across the
river from Alexandria is National Harbor which has alot of
nightlife/restaurants/shops etc you can either cross the river by car (495
over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge) or by water taxi.

As far as Metro goes, Avoid rush hour like the plague the trains are
crowded and finding a seat is next to impossible. If you're intenerary
includes Arlington Cemetary and/or the Pentagon Memorial take the Blue
Line, it's the long way to the Smithsonian and the National Mall The only
disadvantage to non rush service is that the trains run on a much longer
schedule.

This site will help immensely (it's also written in ColdFusion)
http://www.wmata.com/

Also note that the Pentagon Reservation is a high security area, things can
close up at a moments notice. There is no photography allowed outside of
the Pentagon Memorial, they are very strict about this. There are pentagon
tours available but you have to book in advance .

http://www.whs.mil/our-services/visitor-services/pentagon-tours-and-memorial

In short while at the Pentagon, do exactly what they nice men with the
machine guns tell you to do.

More notes: The dinosaur exhibit at the Natural History Museum is closed
until 2017, as they are redoing the entire thing, there are occasional
small exhibits out, but the collection as a whole is being revamped,
cleaned etc.

The Udvar - Hazy Center (the Air and Space Museum Annex) is about 25 Miles
or so due west of DC at Dulles International Airport, and parking is $15
per car.

Things start to ramp up in mid March that's when the tour busses start
showing up en masse and the museums start to get crowded.

If you're also looking for local music and nightlife I can suggest a few
places

Ermmm.. if you were at the farthest stop in Virginia you'd be at
Franconia/Springfield which is right next to a large shopping mall or
Huntington which is outside of Old Town Alexandria in Fairfax County and
not the best neighborhood.

We're you perhaps at the King Street Metro?

Re: Democrats set to lose the senate

2014-09-10 Thread Scott Stewart

Agreed, and I think this is where a lot of the push back is coming from.
Many of us,myself included were raised to never strike a woman, for any
reason. To do so would be considered cowardly.

Don't hit women, don't abuse kids, don't abuse animals, do unto others
that was the mantra from my parents.

When I was training in Taekwondo, if I had done to someone what Ray Rice
did to his fiancee, my Master instructor and Grand Master would have beaten
me half to death themselves.

Re: Democrats set to lose the senate

2014-09-10 Thread Scott Stewart

Gel,

None of this matters, in a US Court regardless of whether or not she hit
him first these questions will be asked.

1) was he in mortal danger at the time. IMO from the video, no
2) Did he use an appropriate amount of force in defending himself. IMO,
from the video, no he didn't he is strong enough to restrain her without
the amount of physical damage, IE knocking her out ,inflicted. He could
have gotten out at the next floor, removing himself from the situation.

IMO, He would be guilty of assault based on the extreme response to being
slapped. He could have easily killed her with the amount of force applied
behind that punch.

This would apply to male or female given the size difference.

Re: Ray Rice

2014-09-09 Thread Scott Stewart

How will I determine smaller, weaker? When that person slaps me in the
face and it stings a little and I don't go down. Sifu Bruce Lee may have
been smaller but he was in no way weaker all you had to do is look at him.
I have over ten years of martial arts training and competition under my
belt. I have been attacked and my fight or flight response is tempered with
control and rational thought. I would be able to judge my response
appropriately.

Both times that I have been attacked have been reported to the police and
in each case the attacker came out worse, broken sternum and broken nose
respectively, and I was not charged because my response was judge to be
appropriate.

There are laws against self defense when the response is inappropriate.

I never said that you said his response was appropriate, you seem to be
dead set on making this about you. The law will say that Rice' response was
not appropriate to the situation.

You also convieniantly reinterpreted what I said about being approached,
my scenario was being approached by someone saying give me All your money,
insinuating a robbery.

Would you shoot that unarmed attacker.

Re: Ray Rice

2014-09-09 Thread Scott Stewart

So your saying that a man shouldn't show restraint if he is kicked, spit
on, cursed at etc.?

There's that issue of equivalent response again... Let me break it down
for you... If someone physically smaller and weaker than me slaps me and I
knock them out either by fist or foot, that is not an equivalent
response, I will be charged and convicted of asault, no amount of claims
of self defense will hold up. If I restrain that person through joint
barring or joint lock, or simply walk away I'm in the clear. It's pretty
much the same in all fifty States. To take it a step further... An
unarmed man approaches you on the street and says give me your money, and
you shoot him dead, you're probably going to prison. Why? Because he was
unarmed and you didn't have to kill him to get out of the situation.

Regardless of what she did, Ray Rice' response wasn't appropriate to the
situation. He could have blocked her slaps, restrained her, or simply
gotten off the elevator. He chose to knock her out.. Case closed.

Don't think for a second that another team won't pick him up once his
suspension is up. Even if he does get convicted he won't spend much time
if any in prison.

He's got enough money to afford a good lawyer, they'll find a lenient
judge and his wife will testify that he's a changed man and he'll never do
it again.. My estimate is that he'll be on someone's practice squad by mid
season and starting again next season.

Re: Ray Rice

2014-09-09 Thread Scott Stewart

The shot that Rice threw wouldn't pass most states reasonable force
statutes if he hit a man. All he needed to do to defend himself would be
to block her slaps as they came in. This is a no brainer. Rice is guilty
of assault.

Better question, would you feel justified in knocking your wife/girlfriend
/significant other out she slapped you...? If your answer is yes then
you've got bigger issues.

Re: Sometimes...

2014-08-04 Thread Scott Stewart

We alot no more than an hour for the retro, and only at the end of a sprint
which winds up being every two weeks.

If the PO has been grooming the backlog like he should sprint planning
shouldn't take a long time. We even built in time to demo each user story
for a sprint.

Our dailies are no more than 15 minutes, and limited to what did you do
yesterday and what are you doing today, anything else is taken off line.

Re: New Music Thursday

2014-04-20 Thread Scott Stewart

Since were talking about "new" music I'll take the opportunity to plug
my band, Division.
http://division.bandcamp.com/

This album is from 1997, but were working on new material for a 2014
release.
If your wondering why the long gap, I left the band in 2003, and there
are two other releases with a different singer, I returned in 2012,
after the guy that replaced me quit in 2012.

It's prog-metal with a huge hint of the heavier end of the metal
spectrum.. The new CD is *much* heavier and much more subtle in it's
weirdness.

enjoy

Who? Larry? No he's in Prince William County which is.east of Loudoun. He's
about 50 miles from the line.
The douche that he's referring to is the rep. from the district adjacent to

+1000, The more we start getting involved in every civil war and
international dust up. The more inclined I am to think that 40 year's of
ham fisted failed domestic policies is starting to come home and bite us in

issues and let the rest of the world deal with life on their own for few
decades.

It does, and there's quantifiable proof that the universe is several
billion years old. A creationist has to throw all this out before their
side has any merit.

Looking for CF Devs

2013-01-22 Thread Scott Stewart

Hey all,

I need to ask some favors. The company that I work for is in need of
mid and senior level ColdFusion developers for a DHS USCIS contract. We
haven't had a lot of luck with getting good candidates in the door.
I've got two but I need two more.

I'm posting this here, because posting on the jobs list is going to get
me more of the same, to be quite honest, and I wanted to reach out to
people that I know are competent developers, to see if they know anyone
who's looking..

What we need is:

Someone who has at least five years of experience.
A US Citizen, it's a requirement for the contract.
Someone who is clearable, and can maintain clearance.
Versed in frameworks, although the in house one is very basic.
Versed in CFC's and basic OO ColdFusion Development
Some Agile/SCRUM experience would be nice.
USCIS or DHS experience would be nice.

They do need to either live in the DC Metro Area or be willing to
relocate for a long term position. All work is to be done at our site in
Tyson's Corner, VA.
You would be an employee, we're not a recruiter or headhunter. We have
good benefits and competitive pay

If you know someone, shoot me an email @ scott.stew...@metters.com, and
I can send out the full req.

Thanks all in advance.

sas

Re: CF10 - Last Edition?

I'm not sure how much of a "leader" John is or isn't. When Ben Forta
says it I'll worry about it.

As for now, the Adobe ColdFusion Blog
http://blogs.coldfusion.com/post.cfm/coldfusion-news-initiatives-and-updates-from-adobe

seems to suggests a new push to
revitalize CFUG's, a shorter development cycle and new education
initiatives..

Plus the roadmap
http://blogs.coldfusion.com/assets/content/roadmap/ColdFusion%20RoadMap.pdf
extends out past 2020..

Doesn't sound to me like a product that's on it's last release.

Once you're manipulating ExtJS through the ColdFusion namespace, you are
using client side code.. the only thing that CF does at this point is
load the libraries..

Re: Front-end training and resources

2012-11-28 Thread Scott Stewart

If you know ExtJS, you can manipulate all of these via javascript,
they all exist in the ColdFusion. namespace and will react the same way
that they would if you had loaded the ExtJS library manually and worked
in the Ext. namespace.

They actually seem to play much better done this way than through cf tags..

Re: Front-end training and resources

2012-11-27 Thread Scott Stewart

Here's my two cents worth on it.

A lot of what's happening with HTML 5 is geared toward mobile devices,
accessibility and SEO, the newer layout magic is CSS 3 generated.
Complex CSS animations, have tools to build them... there's A LOT of
code involved.

1) take a basic JavaScript class, even as a refresher, a lot of what's
going on in the JS Libraries will make more sense
2) get up to speed on CSS, all of the JS libraries depend on a good
understanding of CSS, especially selectors.
3) Understanding the new toys in HTML 5 / CSS 3 depend on the above
4) I'd normally say get thee to jquery.com, but it really depends on
what your doing.. there's a lot to be said for ExtJS in terms of
building web app gui's, plus this is the library that CF uses to build
it's layout widgets. In the end use the one that will suit your needs
the best.

Re: Harsh...

2012-11-21 Thread Scott Stewart

I think one of the major issues is that there are so many CFUG's in this
area.
State Department CFUG
Pentagon CFUG
Maryland CFUG, Rockville.. I think there's also a Baltimore one
DCCFUG
This is just off the top of my head..

My major reason for not attending is that I live so bloody far out ...
It would almost be easier for me if there was a West Virginia CFUG.

I got spoiled in Raleigh because TACFUG was really the only game in town
for CFUG's
the next closest ones would've been Richmond (if one existed) or
Charlotte .. 3.5 hours away.

Now what I may suggest to you is branching out making it a Virginia CFUG
and appealing to the Richmond/Norfolk/Newport News areas.
Richmond is less than two hours away .. (discounting traffic, and the
way that I drive), and doing live online sessions.

I'd call Johnson a pragmatic centrist, some of what he wanted to do was

Re: Chrysler exec calls out GOP on car industry

2012-11-02 Thread Scott Stewart

Here's Chrysler's take on it:

http://blog.chryslergroupllc.com/blog.do;jsessionid=40655E96E3CBE366D16EFBBFE86B401D?id=1950&p=entry

1) Sergio Marchionne, *Chairman/CEO Chrysler Group LLC*
 October 30, 2012
11:55 AM
"Chrysler Group's production plans for the Jeep® brand have become the
focus of public debate.
I feel obliged to unambiguously restate our position: Jeep production
will not be moved from the United States to China"

and

"Together, we are working to establish a global enterprise and
previously announced our intent to return Jeep production to China, the
world's largest auto market, in order to satisfy local market demand,
which would not otherwise be accessible. Chrysler Group is interested in
expanding the customer base for our award-winning Jeep vehicles, which
can only be done by establishing local production."

my take away: We're going to build a plant in China to produce Jeeps for
the Chinese market, we're not closing any plants in the US.

this does not equal "we bailed out Chrysler and in turn they're going to
build Jeeps in China"

Romney strategically left out the important statement that no US plants
are being closed

In other news:
"Biden could have stripped naked and painted Hello Kitty on his ass

That is a truly hideous visual and I now need a new keyboard
because mine is flooded after the water shot out of my nose. (well

Ascension is actually an old release, this was the last one I did before
beginning a ten plus year hiatus
There are two, "Trinity" and "Control Issues" after with the guy that
replaced me, Nick Kelly .

We're working on new songs that are a bit more angry and "In your face"

They set it up but you have access to the server and web administrators,
plus CPanel access for managing domains/email/MySQL db's etc. (although
I have been able to connect using the MySQL Workbench)

Not to very long after I moved back to the DMV, I got a call from my
